Well VirusTotal was acquired by Google and is thriving, so not everything turns to garbage.
Like Warren Buffet says "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked". Most of these companies didn't exist when the last recession happened. Let's see how many will exist after the next one.

S16 companies seem to be missing.
Re:You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video] on Thursday September 08, 2016 @04:34AM (#12451234)
I really suck at Excel
Just deleted my account, this is unacceptable.
Thanks, I will take a look, it seems quite interesting...
Any link with more info to that demo? It sounds interesting.

Just buy at the start and hold until the end, you will outperform the market and most of the people.
They also show Protonmail btw, really nice service :)
hahaha It actually took me a while to realise :D
This is the tool that Elliot uses in the last episode of Mr. Robot, right?
I guess both money and an interesting project. For me both are requirements.
I'm 29 and have exactly the same problem.

I think visiting sites like HN although interesting, don't help too much with this since you see everyday new projects and ideas, and it makes you feel like you are doing nothing with your time.

Re:37signals Works Remotely [video] on Wednesday October 23, 2013 @05:05AM (#6597694)
In my case it's also about location. I am a Spaniard working in the Netherlands for a few years now, paying high rents and being far from family and friends. I could live in Greece (where my wife is from and where we have a fully paid house) but unfortunately there are almost no tech-related jobs there. As a web developer almost 100% of what I do on a daily basis could be done remotely. I wonder if remote work could be the solution for thousands of people like me who have to leave their countries just to find a job.

Re:Ask HN: How does Google measure programmer productivity? on Saturday August 17, 2013 @09:58AM (#6229090)
I was actually wondering the same. Maybe they have to build X number of features of fix Y number of bugs?
Re:Snowden appeals to 15 countries for political asylum on Monday July 01, 2013 @03:47PM (#5973128)
They actually said that Snowden was free to leave as long as he could buy a ticket. You can't buy a ticket from an airline without a passport but a private diplomatic airplane is another thing...
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2013) on Monday July 01, 2013 @01:54PM (#5972382)
1+ are you willing to hire engineers from Europe?

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in a plane to Venezuela, after all Maduro is in Russia at the moment.
For me it helps in the sense that I would prefer to work for a company that actually knows what Hacker News is. Not that easy to find here in Europe...
