Unlike the US where most people are middle class, a sizable number are rich (millionaire plus), and most of the wealthy come from either already well off families or self made.
Everyone craps on US (I mean we are the best at everything lol good and bad) but that’s what happens when you’re the best and at the top of the hierarchy. People say shit about you. It’s not like I care much about that because my life as an immigrant to the USA is phenomenal to say the least.
But I always wonder why Europeans just seem so… stagnant? Like they’ve basically plateaued. Idk.
I’m from a former “colony” so it’s not any concern to me. But I always see these kinds of posts and wonder.
And I speak as someone who had a Tesla since 2018.
We don’t hear about the failures because it’s a tragedy. But I’ve worked with a lot of failed entrepreneurs in their 40s. It’s clear they aren’t happy in their jobs but also have no choice now.
My parents pushed me to get educated. Now I’m in my early 30s and honestly I’m not in a rush to have kids. Do I want kids? Definitely. But right now I’m trying to build family wealth so I can give my kids a great childhood. I’m on track to meet my goals in the next 5 years or so.
Most of the people my age who are situated with kids and family are well to do. They have well off parents who own at least one home. Somehow these people send their kids to private school or can afford to buy homes in great public school districts.
I’ve noticed the people in my situation more often than not are from a similar background. We grew up poor and we are trying to build our wealth. I work in tech so I can’t speak for people from other socioeconomic backgrounds. But this is what I experience.
Most of my friends are other Asians. I don’t know it seems like Americans are mostly well off.
For my smaller projects I’ve used simple kv stores and user id lookups to handle it. Works fine.
Depends how advanced you want to go honestly. If you want to go bonkers use LD. If you want something simple like literally serve X user Y content you could set something up yourself in 30 minutes.
This way if the phone is compromised your email is still there.
As far as convenience goes it is convenient in actual practice as an end user. I’m sure even if 1% have this issue that’s billions who are not. It’s cheap and it’s convenient. Your phone gets the message and autofills.
You don’t need to switch apps to check email or something. And your account will always be recoverable as long as your email isn’t compromised. If you lose your email I mean that sucks. But that happens anyway and it’s why people should rotate passwords and set up MFA.
Security can never be 100%. That’s just a fools errand. It should be convenient enough and secure enough that it works for as many people as possible.
Literally everyone else outside of HN doesn’t even care or understand. They don’t need to. Just use the apps to do your thing and move on.
Let the nerds handle the backend.

I think some of these others may not have worked on such software requirements.

When there is no tangible incentive (helping other people is noble but isn’t an incentive at greater than an individual level - it is an emotional response) it’s impossible to be effective.
I think you should recommend that you should hire people. Even one or two hired people with a bonus incentive will be far more effective. That’s why most successful big “volunteer” organizations have paid employees who give a shit and rally the free volunteers. Their job depends on them making other people motivated to do the job.
If it’s not possible then I’d suggest you try other ways to help.
I am a volunteer myself. I only volunteer at places where I know they’re staffed and not wasting money.
My time is limited. I’m not going to waste it being triggered by incompetence.
Most of my friends who got laid off said they were working on these types of projects, so obviously anecdotal. I was curious so I asked them.
Who cares if it’s not the latest some hipster is pushing on Twitter? Most of the time these people aren’t even serious (in what they’re doing).
Focus on solving your customers problems.
For hobbies it’s free for all. Do whatever you like. It’s fine to be emotionally tied to some library or obscure thing. It’s for fun after all.
For anything serious, it’s good to be serious.
Maybe the trendiest thing will become that some day but don’t tank your own business in the process. Remember that Meta invested heavily in react not for fun but because they are a serious multi billion dollar business (key word).
Does what you’re doing increase revenue, profits, market saturation, improve customer experience, whatever?
If it doesn’t don’t do it.
I don’t think it needs to be that hard.
Fire people who waste time that detracts from this mission.
Imagine you’re in close quarters combat as a soldier and your team lead is goofing off or your manager is focused on looking good. Don’t find yourself in that position. Don’t let your team get to that level of incompetence and failure.
Or just wipe it by installing linux on it lol.
Like I use serverless for a handful of async tasks that can run in background. Common things like image resizing, processing data to make metadata tags or something, or some things that I would have originally used Kafka for. With serverless especially if I’m already on aws for example I have access to the whole ecosystem. Once something completes it can just write data to some store. Done. I don’t need to lose my sanity fixing Kafka event failures and other bs.
Core logic goes into monoliths or services. Anything that can be offloaded that’s an atomic operation goes to serverless from either mono or service.
As for the rendering layer, you will use wasm to build your rendering engine that will load in the user's browser
For most of my needs, Go offers an excellent ratio of developer experience, features, and performance.
I wouldn't say any language is superior or inferior - they all have a valid use case that makes sense. For me personally, I prefer to validate against the ratio I mentioned above.
That being said, Go concurrency is quite simple. It works well and offers great performance.
I’d do the multiplayer aspect first, that is the canvas and positions of each user.
Then I’d start adding components to the canvas and tracking those.
And finally I’d add metadata and other features to those components.
I don’t think in theory the base of the project would be that hard. It’s building those features that would be challenging, because there are a lot of small details that are important to designers.
I don’t think you need any libraries beyond whatever for wasm. Go concurrency is simple and straightforward. Could probably be done in a weekend.
I have not done anything with wasm specifically but I have built a real time collaboration tool backend using Go. It took like four days to put together the base functionality and another month to add all the features.

I know a few people who wanted to get away from the FANG hype grind and went to NASA.
They tell me they’re doing actual engineering for engineerings sake. Which sounds great.
Salary obviously not comparable to FANG 400k plus but the satisfaction and pride is well worth the sacrifice to them.
Me and most of my friends are “super American” like I’m an immigrant who wears USA hats and t shirts. I would love to work at NASA once I have established a little place for myself here. I would be so proud to contribute to this country and its success in space and research.
During the time I was on campus it was mostly empty. There were old computers still inside some rooms. I felt like I had been transported to the 80s or 90s in one hall and some halls even more decades in the past.
Really grand. I can’t imagine what it was like in its heyday.
Constantly engrossing yourself in that misery mill doesn’t help. We already know social media is harmful. The article also mentions illicit drugs and other things. Idk much about those but that is also not good but probably less prevalent than social media use.
Most people I know around my age 20s and 30s that do not engage much with social media are happier than my friends who live mostly online and are always depressed. I get it they want to get away from life but life is all we have.
Sorry just rambling now. I’m pretty sure I’m not wrong when I say that putting down social media and going outside would do wonders for other young people.
Most of these open relationship and poly whatever people.. kinda weird people to begin with. Let them live online and in therapy. It’s just not a normal way to live regardless of how much people defend it lol so the sooner normal people realize that happiness and love is found offline the better.
Personally I am all in on VR and stuff like that so normal people can finally enjoy being outside while all the others are forever online doing whatever. Not my problem, it’s contained. Everyone will have a place they can find happiness which is the most utilitarian solution.

90% of the people I meet these days (I’m in Bay Area) who work in tech just want to get these companies on their resume. People whose bio is basically I’m ex meta ex Amazon ex google.
When most of your employees are only in it for the money and prestige, and nothing more, imo this dullness and stagnation is what you get.
It’s quite toxic.. a culture focused on TC instead of creativity and earnest. Just people chasing a check for the sake of it.
Compare that to the innovations that came out of these companies prior to the mid 2010s. Everything “cool” since then has just been to support their massive scale and not really to promote new and interesting things.

So far I've been using chat gpt as a programming copilot.When I've used "copilot" style tools in real world applications (like Snowflake, New Relic, etc.) I've found them to be pretty bad. They're clearly missing any business domain knowledge (not surprising) and give pretty useless results.I've used what appears to be an AI style chat in Chipotle app and its pretty nice. I've had a few times...
