Re:Ubiquiti SFP Wizard on Tuesday October 28, 2025 @04:25PM (#45738643)
Longer than that - in 2005 I was at a network hardware startup and we had vendor-locked (ahem, _qualified_) SFPs back then. Probably started back in 2001 when they were introduced.
Re:Building Ultra Long Range Toslink on Wednesday January 08, 2025 @10:58AM (#42635501)
As i understand it, the sound for audience in the venue and monitors for artists was run locally by separate mixer. The audio backhauled to HQ was for the live broadcast.
Re:Building Ultra Long Range Toslink on Tuesday January 07, 2025 @08:30PM (#42629918)
Things have probably changed since I last talked to my friends at a large state radio/tv broadcaster, but for long haul they used either MADI over fibre, or AES50 into boxes from NetInsight along with SDI for the video feeds. This works so well that you can put the input/output converters in a venue hosting a live music and do the program audio mix in a control room at broadcast HQ 100s of kilometers away.
Re:Farewell to the Era of Cheap EC2 Spot Instances on Saturday May 06, 2023 @01:55AM (#35838487)
It's happening to us on the reg with m6i SKUs in us-west-1 the last couple months.
I agree that it's 100% justified in both cases and that Cruise definitely needs to fix their shit.
Correct, the supply hoses don't like bending much.
Firefighters practically salivate at the possibility of smashing the windows of a car parked in front of a hydrant they need to access for supply. This isn't much different.
Re:CircleCI Announces Support for Gitlab on Tuesday July 26, 2022 @06:20PM (#32244827)
Just on amd64 right now, we want to move to add support for arm64.

Sadly we adopted CircleCI early on and make heavy use of their support for multiple containers - if you specify a list of containers in a Docker job, it will execute the tests in the first container and connect the other containers as "data" containers (think redis, mysql et c) for use in tests.

Re:CircleCI Announces Support for Gitlab on Tuesday July 26, 2022 @05:15PM (#32244145)
I can and it would require porting my entire CI workflow to machine. We use a lot of docker-executor specific stuff, and if I'm going to spend the time to port several thousand lines of CI config, I can just port it to a different CI platform instead.
Re:CircleCI Announces Support for Gitlab on Tuesday July 26, 2022 @04:30PM (#32243567)
Still no support for arm64 docker executors after years of asking for it.
Re:About MT3 profile and /dev/tty set on Sunday June 05, 2022 @12:18PM (#31632310)
After finishing Severance, I went looking for a keycap set mimicing the Data General Dasher keyboard that the series based their terminals on. Thankfully there's an MT3 version of it[0] which looks and feels amazing. Really love the profile.

Re:35mm cinema film and digital audio on Tuesday April 05, 2022 @09:36PM (#30927426)
Was that ever released for film use? I don't recall seeing any prints referring to ProLogic or ProLogic II during my time as a student film projectionist. If so, it was highly backwards compatible since our decoder was only SR (analog 4.0 matrix).

The prints would generally come with SR (analog 4.0) and SR-D (Bitmaps between the sprockets). Most of the time you'd also get DTS CDs and about 40-50% of the prints we got (in Stockholm) had SDDS, though I think there were maybe like 5 SDDS theatres in Sweden.

Re:35mm cinema film and digital audio on Tuesday April 05, 2022 @06:39PM (#30926011)
Depending on your projector and the amount of space you can fit one or two digital heads in there. We modded our 1950's era Bauer U2's to add DTS readers upstream of the analog sound readers, but at the expense of the 70mm magnetic sound heads. Took about an afternoon.
Re:35mm cinema film and digital audio on Tuesday April 05, 2022 @06:34PM (#30925977)
Dolby SR, the 2-channel analog format on the film, isn't 5.1. It's 4.0 with Left, Center, Right front channels and Mono surround.
Re:Akamai to Acquire Linode on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @04:47PM (#30353227)
Have they gotten faster at applying updates? it would take something like 45 minutes to an hour to make any changes back in 2014, when Fastly was doing sub-minute updates for any CDN changes.

Maybe with this IPO they can finally start reviewing terraform PRs again
On use case I'v seen is live concerts that record the show and sell the show you just saw to you on a USB stick at the merch table on your way out the door.

Re:Tips for Interviewing over Zoom on Saturday June 05, 2021 @02:16PM (#27407346)
I'd recommend some sort of headset over the internal mic and speakers, otherwise you end up fighting the echo cancelling when you're trying to get a word into a conversation or interrupt someone.

In general I feel that zoom convos don't flow as naturally as IRL, but they're even worse when a counterpart doesn't have a headset with a good mic.

The URL and (2002) make it seem like it hasn't be updated since, but the latest commit to it is from october.

These macros, along with the list/queue macros in queue.h are super useful. I've inclduded them in several projects and it's super simple to just drop in the header file since it's BSD licensed

Re:Stored Procedures as a Back End on Thursday December 03, 2020 @01:35PM (#25292629)
At a previous job I was at 2007-2014, we were doing classified ads[1] we had a lot of logic in stored procedures in our Postgres database written in pl/pgsql. It made sense at the time, but after a while these got really unwieldy and deploying things got tricky, since you we needed to update both appserver code and database stored procs at the same time. There also wasn't a great way to update stored procs at the time - we built this into an RPM that just ran a postinstall script to do an atomic swap.

I wouldn't build this into the database were I to build it today.

Even then i'm not sure Broadcom would give you that. They're very aware that they're your only source for $chip and will treat you accordingly.

(A few employers ago, they were the only source for ethernet PHYs for a carrier-grade network product we were building where we supplied our own MAC)

In Sweden if you're disabled, the government will pay for taxis for you. There's limits on how often et c and they don't come as fast as a normal taxi booking and you can only bring one other person with you, but it's a great option for when public transit doesn't cut it.

> If there are apps on MacOS that can't handle high dpi mode, I haven't run into them as a developer (or doing photo editing, video editing, plus whatever other hobbies I do). Also, I don't have any trouble with plugging my highDPI MacBook into a crappy 1080p display at work.

PyCharm had high CPU consumption issues with a Macbook connected to a 4k display running in a scaled resolution. Native 4k was fine, using the default resolution was fine but "more space" made it use tons of CPU since it had to rescale text and UI elements on the CPU.

You know it's an AWS service when you look at it and go "Huh, it's only 2x the price of S3, what a bargain!"
