If people dont know, they should look up DAO hack and Ethereum hard fork.
There was a recent report from Finnish news agency YLE showing that the diagnosis rates show significantly variations between different regions of the country. So it seems even within a single country the criteria can be inconsistent.
Re:DuckDB Internals: Why Is DuckDB Fast? (Part 1) on Friday June 19, 2026 @05:27AM (#48596616)
It depends on your task. In analytics where you need to scan lots of data points within few columns, then columnar storage is very much the best. But for transactional workloads where you have to deal with specific entities, row based would be more advantageous. There are hybrid systems that try to be both at the same time but in my experience they end not doing either very well.
Re:How to Earn a Billion Dollars on Monday June 15, 2026 @04:19AM (#48538181)
What a fine story you tell!

Let’s ignore all the political and socio economic dynamics driving the current trends. Squeeze people’s livelihood by rent seeking; pillage public resources while externalizing as much of the risks and cost of doing business back to public; limit access to capital to few networks. Then pretend it’s in people’s power to choose to earn more if they would only work harder.

No one is arguing that founders shouldn’t earn the rewards for their work and risk. But to act like it’s all fair business and freedom of choice is rather glib to the point of being callous.

They also care about networking and connections.

There is no guarantee that the asi would care about human beings at all. Personally, I can’t see why it would.
After all that has been revealed to us over the past 15 years, it is really disheartening to see people still thinking that setting a few toggles will prevent these companies from abusing them.

Just continues to prove that if you solve a bit of inconvenience for them, people will let you exploit them and their families.

Funny that these are the same people that have been blasting the alarm on dangers of AI singularity. Now they cannot wait to put their tools in weapons.

La Bete (The Beast) by Bertrand Bonello was also quite on point I thought.

None of this prevents them from providing proper customer service that can resolve cases of false positives.
Re:Why movies just don't feel "real" anymore on Monday November 17, 2025 @02:37AM (#45951582)
I think that is the wrong lesson to take away from the video. As the video emphasizes, DoF is a tool that can be used to achieve an intended effect in story telling.

Main thrust of the video is that these days these tools are predominantly being used for convenience of post-production and cost cutting at the expense of immersion and story telling.

Being part of the team that achieved AGI first would be to write your name in history forever. That could mean more to people than money.

Also 10m would be a drop in the bucket compared to being a shareholder of a company that has achieved AGI; you could also imagine the influence and fame that comes with it.

He is asking a valid question. Experts on the issue also warn that there is no guarantee that what replaces the current regime would be any more amenable.
They are very similar; with various similar solutions at differing stages of maturity.

> At least my experience is that if you confront them with harsh enough reality, they basically fail to provide anything useful.

When I started therapy, I felt the same way. But now I realize that there can be no easy solutions offered in therapy; the therapist cannot just give you an argument or trick that will resolve all your troubles. They are there to guide you through figuring it out yourself and help build the necessary habits to sustain the new state. That is why rapport between a therapist and their patient is crucial to success, thus why you are usually recommended to try several alternatives.

Re:U.S. Pauses All Military Aid to Ukraine on Tuesday March 04, 2025 @05:30AM (#43252839)
I admire that you put yourself in dangers way for what you think was right.

However it is really disingenuous to try frame a global conflict between super powers in terms of personal responsibility. Your prescription is in the same vein as saying those worried about climate change should recycle more, when it is clear their utmost efforts would not make a dent in the global scheme of things. As such, no amount of motivated militia is going to make a dent in a war against an industrialized military.

Just come out and say I don't want to pay for to support Ukraine's war against Russia. Your opinion is valid and should be taken into account. However you don't get to dodge your responsibilities if the outcome doesn't go your way, just like a Democrat has to live with Trump's policies whether they like it or not. It's pathetic to try garnering sympathy with cage analogies.

Re:Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting on Saturday March 01, 2025 @06:26AM (#43218248)
You are advocating for giving in to the bully in the hopes that they will stop bothering you. The reality is that the bully will never stop, Russia’s aim is total annexation of Ukraine. Making peace without proper guarantees would be to ensure more Ukrainian people will die in the future.
I dont know which scenario is worse for a president, an experienced economist like him not understanding what he was endorsing or being part of the scam.
he didnt just retweet. even if he did, president of the country should be held to higher standards than your average influencer.

I guess you can look into Framework for laptops. Many appear to be satisfied with them on HN.
it used to be so that in order for a product to be called "dondurma" (ice cream) it had to have salep in it. all other regular ice cream had to be sold under the name "buz" (ice).

i wonder if this is still the case.

it has a thick texture but it is not as chewy as mochi. on the other hand it is very pliable and has a distinct taste both due to use of salep.
As most things it is a balancing act. Children also need to socialize and learn to operate in a social setting independently from their parents. Day cares have an important role in this aspect in our nuclear family based societies. Confining children to be paired to their parents all the time is also not going to be good for their development.

Unless you come from a very religious background, many Turks don't care if their meat is halal or not.
