Enjoyed this, super readable. Would love more "postmortems" like it, and it’s neat that Telegram runs contests like this.
Re:Equinix to sunset Metal (formerly Packet) on Tuesday November 12, 2024 @02:17PM (#42118641)
I have just seen this in their Slack, it is kind of crazy that no-one seems to really care. I thought they were really big, but apparently nobody was using them? If you for example search "Equinix Metal" on Google and then click on news nothing shows up.
Re:Spam Package "Attack" on NPM on Tuesday August 20, 2024 @12:21PM (#41301428)
This account is creating weird spam packages on npm. I can't figure out the reason for it, but it seems fairly elaborate. A lot of the packages depend on each other and the packages get updated over months with bullshit commits like here: https://github.com/erboladaiorg/et-itaque/commits/main/

Not sure what to make of it, I first thought it might be related to the Tea project which previously had the creation of spam packages associated with it, but I haven't found any reference to that in the package sources I looked at.

Why does it matter who he is at the company? I actually like the touch of not making a difference between "regular" employees and being Founder or CEO. On me this made a positive impression. In my opinion what matters is what is being said, not who is saying it.

Ask HN: Articles, references and best practices of DDoS defense

I am a software engineer that got interested in networking recently. I have now learned the basics of running a BGP setup (on providers like EquinixMetal) and would now like to learn the basics of DoS/DDoS defense, but I can't seem to find any articles whatsoever on the internet.I am quite familiar with iptables/fail2ban management (to the level of locking down a machine and banning individual...

Re:About Safety Mode and autoblock by Twitter on Wednesday March 16, 2022 @04:00AM (#30696364)
This seems like a really stupid idea, reminds me a little bit of the Google auto-account-closing thing where no-one knows the real logic or algorithm behind it. And that doesn't work great at all either, as one can see by the countless HN threads of people getting their whole businesses destroyed due to that. Is one even going to get notified when someone gets auto-blocked by Twitter for them?
Re:How to Build an Anycast Network on Saturday October 30, 2021 @10:07AM (#29048870)
Yeah, we’re currently thinking about using a third provider with BGP and DDoS protection for the announced blocks and only tunneling it through there when we are being DDoSed but said provider only offers servers in three locations (Luxembourg, New York and Las Vegas) and has no API for automated server ordering etc., so we’ll have to see. Looking forward to reading the follow-up blog post!

How were you handling DDoS attacks at Vultr/EquinixMetal? As far as I understand it they offer zero protection at all
Re:Waiting for apt locks without hacky Bash scripts on Monday October 25, 2021 @08:06PM (#28994868)
I had exactly the same issue in one of my deploy scripts about 6-7 hours ago and fixed it with the fuser solution you mentioned in the askubuntu thread. What a coincidence haha, I’ll try this out tomorrow, thanks so much :)
Re:IPv4 pricing on Thursday July 29, 2021 @01:09PM (#27998761)
Do you know of any other providers with at least the same quality that Vultr offers that offer BGP?
Re:Degraded performance on GitLab.com on Tuesday July 02, 2019 @02:48AM (#20332761)
Exactly what I am doing too, always wait for the next patch release after a x.0.0.

Before doing that I had two situations where the major release broke something. Never looked back.

Seems like it isn't only the website, loads of people are reporting routing problems and high pings. No official statement yet.
CDN77 is pretty awesome
I never stated it was for exile.

but you are right, article 2 talks about him being in Russia some time in early 2014. It also states that one of the reasons to be there was for selling a datacenter. He left shortly after that with the comment that he had no intentions to return to Russia arguing that the country is incompatible with doing internet business.

> Я уехал из России и не собираюсь возвращаться. К сожалению, в данный момент страна не совместима с ведением бизнеса в интернете

As for the office being in the same building as VK's - that is definitely weird. Even though I know that they also have offices in Berlin and London. Same goes for the fact that they also have multiple datacenters around the world for speed and security. There probably is also going to be a DC in Russia. I don't feel like my data is unsafe due to that.

And where did he lie about the location of developers or servers? I'd be very interested in seeing that. With that you could convince me that something fishy is going on.

You can't be more wrong and uninformed. Russia-bashing seems to be a common and accepted theme now. He actually left Russia and his old company because the Russian government tried to censor it (VK) and he refused to do so. So basically he and Putin are in some kind of fight / disagreement.

Re:Docker Enterprise Edition on Thursday March 02, 2017 @07:31PM (#13779754)
Not sure about this, generally I have the feeling that Docker doesn't really care anymore about making a great open source container engine. They've never listened to the people who pointed out flaws in Docker which then made these guys start working on rkt. I've had a ton of issues with Docker and IPTables, Multi Host Networking, IPv6 etc. - there were solutions available most of the time but it always takes ages for them to merge it in (5+ months in some cases) or even care about basic issues such as not being able to run IPTables with docker because it bypasses IPTables en total. Adding a EE will definitely not make things better, in my opinion even worse. I think most "new" features will be put into EE so that they can bait enterprises into buying it. But maybe I am mistaken, we'll see. Like I said, not sure about it.
Re:Docker Enterprise Edition on Thursday March 02, 2017 @10:01AM (#13774422)
Nice, no features anymore for CE. I really love the path Docker has taken in the past months...

I wish I could switch to rkt, but there are so many things such as docker-compose which don't exist as equivalent for rkt yet.

Re:Dear open-source maintainers, a letter from GitLab on Monday January 18, 2016 @10:11AM (#10924798)
I don't know if that would apply to GitLab too, but maybe consider switching from the CE / EE model to just one "product" and a free for non-commercial model? Like e.g. http://3t.io/mongochef/download/ does it? I like that model way more than a feature-reduced version.
