On Windows, you do get 4K HDR/DV on Netflix and Apple TV. Those services are the exception though.
Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:34PM (#50292893)
FYI, both VP9 and AV1 support lossless as part of their base profiles, so lossless files using those codecs should be compatible with all implementations (at least in theory). Though those profiles only support 4:2:0, so it depends on your use case if that really counts as lossless.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:59PM (#50214498)
Once you have used an exploit to get system access to your own device, you can patch the software to prevent anyone else from using the same vulnerabilities. See e.g. https://github.com/EolnMsuk/AntiDarkSword (but of course, as more and more vulnerabilities keep being found, it becomes basically impossible to backport all the fixes)
Current street prices in Austria:

~750€ for the Motorola Signature, with 512 GB storage

~900€ for the Pixel 10 Pro XL, with 256 GB storage (the 11 Pro XL costs much more at ~1200€, since it just came out a month ago)

Re:Prepare your iPhone 18 Pro Max to ship on Saturday September 19, 2026 @08:13AM (#49765915)
All the Chinese phones that still have a high capacity battery in the EU use a dual-cell battery. If you look up the part number for yours (BP5H), you can see that it looks like two batteries glued together rather than a single solid chunk. That split slightly reduces the capacity compared to the models sold in China, but it allows them to exceed the 20 Wh limit.
Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:50AM (#49464909)
A normal GrapheneOS installation uses Android Verified Boot with a locked bootloader, and does not give the user root access. Google's Play Integrity cannot be used to verify the integrity of the OS (as GrapheneOS is not approved by Google), but equivalent verification can be done using standard Android APIs and GrapheneOS's public keys.
Re:Firefox intent to ship: JPEG XL on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @03:39AM (#49430308)
AVIF supports regular AV1 videos, there is no intra-only constraint. You can try this yourself with any AV1 video:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -c:v copy output.avif

You are right about Firefox and Chrome not using hardware decoding though, as such an AVIF video plays back poorly. And Chrome refuses to load an AVIF larger than 256 MB on my machine.

Re:GrapheneOS in 2027 available on high-end Motorola phones on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @09:06AM (#49361120)
No current Motorola phones meet their hardware requirements. 2027 flagship models will be the first to be supported.

Are you buying ones that are "Ultra High Speed" HDMI certified? At least in theory, those should all be able to handle the maximum 48 Gbps bandwidth supported by HDMI 2.1
Re:LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @06:30AM (#49004512)
I think they meant that the use of cookies for analytics/tracking, which is what triggers the popup requirement, would have been considered malicious.
Re:VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @06:27AM (#48990408)
Strange omission to talk about the general anti-AI sentiment, while not mentioning that the #3 most-watched English VTuber (Neuro-sama) is an LLM – who is actually widely accepted as a "good" use of AI by other VTubers and viewers.
