I hate the new system preferences. I miss how the old one had handcrafted icons and just felt more compact.

I understand the new design scales better but I agree that the search is broken. Also it’s not responsive and feels like a web app.

Re:Apple announces the ultra-slim iPhone Air on Tuesday September 09, 2025 @02:17PM (#45186107)
My iPhone 13 mini (5.4" display) is 141g and it's immediately noticeable how much lighter it feels than a pro phone. I can imagine the effect being more exaggerated given the larger but thin profile of the 17.
Re:GPT-4o on Monday May 13, 2024 @11:34PM (#40351413)
I don't know if my iOS app is using GPT-4o, but asking it to translate to Cantonese gives you gibberish. It gave me the correct characters, but the Jyutping was completely unrelated. Funny thing is that the model pronounced the incorrect Jyutping plus said the numbers (for the tones) out loud.
I think cars only look good relative to other cars. But as an object themselves, they don’t add to the landscape.

Look at all the concept renderings of future apartments or idyllic European countryside’s. There’s always only a few cars or one car. Together, they are an an invasive organism.

Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed the read and the concise decision-making and legal terms used.
That metric is like the megapixel wars of cameras. Just something to chase so the newer model can be “better”. It does nothing except validate your purchase when you rev it obnoxiously.

To continue your thought, what are some things that need to be regulated in order to prevent future societal decay that the technology itself brings (such as allowing cars to roam free which propagated further car-centrism?)

Re:The U.S. Housing Market vs. the Canadian Housing Market on Sunday September 10, 2023 @10:23AM (#37456047)
Isn’t it really expensive to live there?

Also, while Dubai is flashy, I wouldn’t really consider it a first tier city in terms of actual living. The urban planning is not human scale at all and they just defaulted to highways and skyscrapers.

Re:As I get older, I just don't care about new technology on Saturday August 26, 2023 @11:07AM (#37273555)
Genuine question, as someone who got exhausted and is out of the industry for the foreseeable future. How do you stay competitive or job hop when every post is looking for the latest web framework?
Here’s a podcast that talks about how Dollorama (and Walmart) is changing city design.

What were the prevailing theories at the time?
Re:Reddit.com appears to be having an outage on Monday June 12, 2023 @02:41PM (#36298826)
I hope it humbles whoever builds the next platform. Nothing lasts forever no matter how entrenched it is in the zeitgeist.

Once something gets big enough, it becomes impossible to moderate and eventually it will fall out of fashion and lose its original intent. Look at Etsy and Amazon.

I'm finding people are rearely loyal customers to a brand long-term. Rather, they want whatever platform gets them what they want. People jump from sites like Aliexpress to Wish to Shein to whichever webiste has the most latest and marketing team.

It will be very sad. It's been a pleasant era for Reddit-fu.
I visited Boise and i realized that about myself too. I prefer all the amenities and infrastructure of a walkable city that is not too crowded.
Re:No, I don’t want to sign up for your newsletter on Monday April 24, 2023 @10:56AM (#35688417)
I’ve seen a few websites recently with a pleasant newsletter experience.

The signup field is a few paragraphs down the article and as you scroll to it, the article dims (but is still readable) and highlights the newsletter section. As you keep scrolling the the dimming fades out and you can read the article again.

This is much less jarring than a pop up and is placed after the reader gets to read at their pace.

And even if someone replies to you specifically, the only way you would know is noticing your karma increased on the top right of the page.
It almost feels like a pretty PHP in the way you can mix HTML and template code inline.
Re:Show HN: Weigh My Luggage – Just bring a bathroom scale on Saturday March 18, 2023 @02:37PM (#35211851)
Thank you! I haven’t seen anyone make something like this before (I’m guessing it’s because the calculating formula is simple), but I think the extra features and simply having a GUI does provide value.

I usually don’t know know what to build and struggle with staying motivated on tutorials so it’s been a really fun project to work on :)

Re:New React docs pretend SPAs don't exist anymore on Saturday March 18, 2023 @02:26PM (#35211738)
It’s funny to think there was a time when using JS vs JQuery was the biggest division among devs. Now just using JS is considered the baseline and React is the new framework that people jump to when it isn’t always necessary.
App: This tool clearly shows you which bags are overweight and which bags have room. It also shows messages telling you how to rearrange your bags.

Backstory: I recently needed to move and bring several suitcases. I like the trick of weighing oneself on a bathroom scale and then subtracting body weight to get the luggage weight.

However, it’s cumbersome to keep track of all the numbers when you have multiple bags and have to constantly rearrange them.

At the time I made an Excel spreadsheet, but I thought I’d make a tool that was easy for everyone to use with more features.

It’s been a minute since I’ve done web dev, but it’s been fun getting back into things and catching up on the latest standards. It’s just plain ol’ JS, HTML, and CSS. There is a link to my Github on the page so any feedback would be highly appreciated!

Curiosity is probably a better word. There’s no way to get around without a car here so it’s just not the norm. So when someone is walking in the middle of the highway or down a dark road you naturally wonder why. If I grew up somewhere with a high crime rate I may actually be suspicious.
Unfortunately, city design alters people's perceptions of where it is acceptable to walk. I moved from walkable Vancouver to car-centric Mississippi, and I already look at people with suspicion when they are walking on the road in the middle of nowhere. I wonder where their car is and why they are walking there.

> This was in Killingly, Connecticut, a suburban town in the northeast part of the state. The Rivers' lived near an elementary school, library, state police barracks, sidewalks, crosswalks, many Victorian-style homes, and the aforementioned donut shop. The kids gathered $7, and off they went.

Street View shows that the town looks quite walkable especially for suburban America. It just boggles my mind that people would consider calling the police on a 7 and 9 year old for walking on those streets.

I hate that this is a self-perpetuating fear. The more people fear, the less people walk on the streets, which makes the neighbourhood appear less safe and vibrant.
Sorry you had to go through that. I am having a hard time thinking of a way how someone could walk their child to the bathroom wrong. Could you share some more details if you are comfortable?
Re:Ask HN: What's the best lecture series you've ever seen? on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @10:13AM (#34596042)
The "Let's build GPT: from scratch, in code, spelled out." demystifies so much of machine learning and chatbots. It's so cool to see how simple python code can be leveraged into something so amazing.
Re:And Worst Decisions I’ve Ever Made on Friday January 27, 2023 @03:35PM (#34551483)
One culture shock while in South Korea is that people who brush their teeth after every meal in the office. Teachers would even walk around the hallway with a tooth brush in their mouth.
I’ve always liked Apple’s implementation because the slider has a temporal state.

Airplane mode used to take a a couple seconds to enable so the toggle felt “stickier” to toggle. When you tapped on the toggle, the round button elongated and stayed in the middle for a split second before hitting the right side boundary of the toggle.

Often what we want is some familiar texture and substantial mouthfeel of meat. Just adding tiny slices of meat to remind you it’s there or substituting it with “meatier” veggies like mushrooms or cabbage can do the trick.
