Ask HN: Gmail spam filters acting up?

I just checked my Gmail spam box, and there have been over a dozen emails in the past month that were incorrectly sent to spam. Most were promotional (Yelp, Taskrabbit, a couple of hotels I've visited and newspapers I subscribed to), but some were personal -- a receipt from the Apple store, two from my car dealer confirming an appointment.Has anyone else noticed this recently?

Those options aren't mutually exclusive.

You only have to look at the Salem Witch Trials to know that this has been going on for hundreds of years, and probably much longer than that. Any social group eventually develops its leaders and outcasts. Combine that with the human instinct to understand misfortune by casting blame, and you get situations like this.

There's a difference between doing research and making judgmental statements based upon assumptions. $23K is probably fine for a single guy. What about a man with children or aging parents? Medical bills? Most of the advice given is very good, but there's no reason to accuse him of living beyond his means and making excuses other than to kick him while he's down.

Just because it's a phenomenon you don't have experience doesn't make it trivial. I would argue that there's a link between these teenage girls and our culture's depiction of the romantic side of 'bad boys.' I know far too many young women who stay in abusive or worthless relationships because they think they can fix the guy, or that deep inside the guy is just misunderstood. Where does that instinct come from?

Conversely, think about how easy it is to write someone off because he or she looks like a low-life. Why do we always try to understand the motivations of attractive and female killers, while other segments of society are ignored entirely?

Obama's good-looking, but people don't admire him because of his policy on drones. We don't have videos of him launching a drone strike and melting away into the crowd. The parent raises a good point, but it's not exactly relevant to this discussion.

There needs to be a 'best practices' for the unsubscribe option. In the ideal case, you click unsubscribe in the email and are taken to a webpage either confirming your choice or asking you to click a single confirmation button. But sometimes you have to re-enter your email address to unsubscribe, or login to your account to do so.

If I'm reading email on my phone I don't want to have to spend 30 seconds entering my email address or looking up the password for some account I haven't used in months. In the worst case I've lost my password or someone else has used my email address by mistake, and then I'm forced to find the password reset option, re-check my email, and change the password just to unsubscribe. By that point just clicking 'spam' and getting the email out of my inbox starts to sound like a good idea.

Assuming you don't get too many 'bad actors' showing the mean and the median would help.
Since your service is invite-only, why don't you post a screenshot of the page in question? If a significant portion of posters think the page is deceptive, maybe that's an indication that your UI is the problem, not the user.

Yes, I've created a filter so that any emails from certain people automatically get re-routed to the intended recipient.

I've gotten everything from business plans to divorce papers sent to my [email protected] address. In some cases I've tracked them down and called their cell phones, and they still mistakenly send me email. There are some people whose email automatically gets re-routed to the 'correct' account with a note, and they continue to use my email address. Some have even sent me nasty emails saying they're blocking my address, as if I am to blame somehow for their incompetence.

I understand that people make mistakes and typos happen. But when you're dealing with legal documents there's no excuse for this kind of oversight.

Did they collect the money in advance? If not, it seems to me that the shipping time is almost irrelevant.
