Re:Old Stockholm Telephone Tower on Saturday October 04, 2025 @10:00AM (#45473380)
If you have n nodes, each one needs to connect to n-1 other nodes. But the connection from A to B is the same as the one from B to A. Therefore, there are n(n-1)/2 total connections.

Re:Transparent Ambition: on translucent user interfaces on Monday June 23, 2025 @02:30PM (#44358626)
My Mac screen isn't transparent. Why should its UI be?

If there is "some sort of AR glasses and something smaller form factor than the Vision Pro that will require transparency so you can see through to the real world", limit the transparent interface only to that device.

Re:Ask HN: Java why put string in a constant? on Thursday May 22, 2025 @10:28AM (#44062413)
You just made TWO typos: "display-name" vs "display_name" and "_name" vs "name", automatically counter-argumenting your point.

It is also for documentation. With the declared constants, we know all possible values. With plain strings, how am I supposed to know which values to use?

The benefits far outweigh the marginal cost.

Re:Wikipedia: Database Download on Sunday April 27, 2025 @02:20PM (#43813995)
I would be happy if they worked locally. It is not often that I need to set the temperature remotely, when I am not in the house. But often I am laying in bed at night and don't want to get up and go downstairs to adjust the temperature. Why can't they work on the local network? That would take no resources from Google

The only thing better than telling a lie and people believing it, is telling the truth and no one believing it. Shows that her achievements are truly remarkable
Re:How to Force Your Kids to Do Math? on Saturday April 19, 2025 @05:44PM (#43739704)
I'm fortunate enough that my daughter has an admirable interest (and talent) for Math since very early age. She even won a medal at a renowned nationwide Math competition when she was in Grade 5... competing in the Grade 10 category.
Re:Garfield Minus Garfield on Thursday April 10, 2025 @02:13PM (#43646622)
The concept would be more interesting and realistic if they removed only Garfield's thought bubbles (after all, Jon can't hear Garfield's thoughts anyway) but still left Garfield in the comic.
Re:Powers of 2 with all even digits on Thursday March 20, 2025 @09:34AM (#43423114)
How many powers of 2 have just a single even digit? 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 512...
Reminds me of this meme: https://i.redd.it/silx0aw4a1v51.jpg

Our phones replaced numerous different devices. All the time we used to spend watching TV, listening to music, reading books, getting the news, playing games, talking to friends is now done on our phones.

Re:Apple ordered to open up in-app purchases in Brazil on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @02:10PM (#42248868)
$43,000/0.00016 = $268,750,000 I doubt Apple sells that much a day in Brazil.
Re:All of Earth's water in a single sphere on Tuesday August 13, 2024 @04:42PM (#41239622)
Yes. The fresh-water lakes and rivers sphere definitely does not look like it could fill the Great Lakes next to it. I am not saying it doesn't, I'm just saying it doesn't look like it could.
Not at tourist destinations in Mexico and Dominican Republic. It is inhumane that those airports offer absolutely no free drinking water options for passengers. Tap water in these countries is not safe to drink.
You got 5" and 8" mixed up
It would have worked if the nuts represented squares instead of points

Easy to achieve the same in any language that supports the uniform access principle, and it does not even look magical
