Re:The Burrows-Wheeler Transform on Thursday October 09, 2025 @07:02PM (#45533924)
This is a good article and a fun algorithm. Google made a great series of compression videos a while ago - albeit sometimes silly. For the Burrows-Wheeler one they interviewed Mike Burrows for some of the history. https://youtu.be/4WRANhDiSHM
Re:"Your" vs. "My" in user interfaces on Tuesday September 16, 2025 @03:03AM (#45258970)
We’ve been talking about this for a while, but it’s always fun to revisit in the context of the latest advancements and trends. I always liked the conclusion that Dustin Curtis came to which is: if you can use “your” in the UX it acts like a conversation with the user. This is even more appropriate as UX is becoming literally conversational.

No it isn’t.
This is really cool! Thanks for making it. I'm going to try it out today with my UV-PRO. I'd be curious to learn how you go about reversing the protocol. That'd make a really interesting blog post.

Looks more like a clutch to me. The domain is available. It’s not to late to change names.

Akiyuki makes infrequent videos, but beautiful LEGO machines.

Thanks, I didn’t realize I get these articles with my Apple News subscription.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2024) on Thursday February 01, 2024 @08:50PM (#39223960)
Yes, depending on the team. We have a legacy Elixir backend that we’ve been breaking into services written in Go. We also have a couple of newer Elixir services. We’d love Elixir experience especially if you are also interested in Go.
Re:Game Boy / Color Architecture on Tuesday December 26, 2023 @10:15PM (#38778715)
Some people have done this, but you need to transplant at least the CPU from an original. Those chips weren’t built for anyone else. https://www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/s/FEAH2VhBRT

FunnyPlaying recently came out with an FPGA-based version for an affordable price. https://funnyplaying.com/products/fpgbc-kit?variant=40858870...

They also have a new, populated motherboard for the Game Boy Advance, into which you have to transplant the CPU and RAM.

Re:Gameboy Technical Reference for Homebrew Developers on Thursday November 23, 2023 @02:33PM (#38396552)
Thanks for making those videos. I really enjoyed watching them earlier this year. I’ve been getting into making games, restoring, and collecting Game Boys.
Re:The Trouble with Ingredients in Sunscreens on Thursday November 09, 2023 @02:31AM (#38202158)
Rash guards are halfway between a wetsuit and a sun shirt. I have one for surfing, but I got the kids wetsuits because Flathead Lake can be cold as well as sunny. They have more fun and play longer in the water with them.
Re:The Trouble with Ingredients in Sunscreens on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @04:00PM (#38182752)
I’ve started to minimize my use of sunscreen. It still important to stay protected from the sun, but long sleeves, hoods, hats, and pants are a great alternative. The lightweight sun shirts are comfortable and more convenient.

For my kids, I got them cheap wetsuits from Amazon for the time we spend camping at the lake. This is also cheaper than sunscreen. They can fully manage it on their own since about age 6 or 7.

Re:I think I kind of hate lazy loading on Thursday September 14, 2023 @12:13AM (#37504896)
It’s a data driven decision. They a/b tested and found users were more interested in clicking on ads when images were lazy loaded.
Re:“How About Never” (2014) on Wednesday September 06, 2023 @07:53PM (#37412999)
Of course this isn’t really monumental, but it can be hard to understand history if you’re looking at it through a modern lens. Humor was different, and this phrase was not in the lexicon like it is now. It was fresher then.
Thanks for the reply, and the info on Weblate too. I’ll check it out the next time I need a localized site. Looks like a nice tool.
That's fun! It also likely serves a real purpose. It lets English-only speakers test that localization is working and available for every text element.
Re:The rule says, “No vehicles in the park” on Saturday June 24, 2023 @12:32AM (#36455603)
It’s funny, I first thought the game was going to be a commentary on the “no mechanical transport in the wilderness” rule that he mentioned at the end. You cannot have a bicycle in the wilderness. You can’t push it or carry it. I guess this simplifies enforcement. If someone is camped with a bike, they can be ticketed.

I have friends that do long bike camping trips, and they sometimes want to pass through areas of wilderness on their trips. What do they do? They take apart the bike and pack it, because you are allowed to have bike parts in the wilderness.

Exactly what I do, but with a 5", 20x25" MERV 16 filter. I run two of these on box fans when it's smokey in the summer, and it works very well. Box fans do get loud though.
Re:Tell HN: iOS converts units for highlighted text on Thursday April 27, 2023 @02:06AM (#35723878)
It is so annoying! Slack in particular. I screenshot and then copy. Feels like a waste of compute as well as a hassle.
What matters to sailors with respect to the wind is the angle which it meets the boat or the orientation of the boat with regard to the direction of the wind. For that there are dedicated names known as the points of sail which include: close hauled, close reach, beam reach, broad reach, run, and in irons.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_of_sail

It comes down to trademarks. ICANN has a dispute resolution process if someone else registered a domain for which you have an applicable trademark. https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/help/dndr/udrp-en

This process may vary based on the TLD. For The Channel Islands, you can start here: https://disputes.gg/

IANAL

I usually would, but I actually didn’t find it tacky in this article up until the end where the article mentioned they were so impressed that they upgraded their own boat. That was just a little bit tacky, but not terrible given it was a press release. The rest is how I would talk about it while sailing. I often say “the Garmin” instead of “the chart plotter”.
Re:Ask HN: Books your kids like most on Thursday February 02, 2023 @09:14PM (#34636319)
My kids really enjoyed Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks. They already liked Minecraft, and the book was a fun read. For a 4yo, I think anything that you read with him is great. Also, when my kids were about that age, they really liked the Roald Dahl books. Just get the boxed set, because they are all good.

I’ve been happy with Google’s Firebase Hosting. It’s confusing branding, but almost a drop in replacement. https://firebase.google.com/docs/hosting

onXmaps | Software Engineers | Remote or offices in Missoula and Bozeman, MT

At onXmaps we build web and mobile mapping apps to help people get outdoors. We have iOS and Android apps for hunting, off-roading, hiking and backcountry skiing. The maps work well offline, and provide details you can't get elsewhere such as property ownership, crop types, and high resolution aerial imagery.

We have been steadily growing, and continue to hire for engineers that like to work with one or more of: Kotlin, iOS, Go (golang), PostgreSQL, Python, and Vue. We host on GCP with Kubernetes.

We also have roles in Product Management and Design.

Apply or read more at https://www.onxmaps.com/join-our-team

At onXmaps, we are strong advocates for public land and access to it. We work to report on landlocked and corner-locked public lands and develop new access in partnership with many other organizations. NYT has a good article on the issues here: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/26/business/hunting-wyoming-...

Re:Burrows–Wheeler Transform on Saturday September 24, 2022 @07:18AM (#32961486)
This is a fun video from a series on compression that explains it well, and features Mike Burrows:

https://youtu.be/4WRANhDiSHM

He shares the origin of the algorithm as well as a story about how it was first published.

The Compressor Head video series is the best introduction to compression that I’ve found.

Re:Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen? on Monday September 12, 2022 @01:49AM (#32806530)
The Eagle Huntress (2016) [1] follows a Mongolian girl as she learns to hunt with an eagle and participate in male-dominated competitions.

Beautiful scenery and an impressive story. I checked the other threads and it hasn’t been mentioned. Really worth a watch.
