MS as a company remains perpetually in reset mode.
Re:Mistral raises €3B on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:24AM (#49606228)
I've been applying to jobs at Mistral, just straight rejects.

Not even a phone call :(

It also might help if you are a praying man.
Finding hobbies and working out didnt work for me. People say it works. It doesnt for me and sounds cliched. But dont let it fool you in the manner that these things work for others but not for me, I must be doomed then.

Again detach yourself and wait for better times.

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation"

I was laid off from a very well paying job and to support my family I had to take up a worse paying job with similar problems to the one you described.

Yes. Ive had dark thoughts sometimes. I dont know the answer. It helps to distance oneself and treat the dark thoughts passively, as in if I wasnt in this situation these ideas would not be coming to me, or something like - these are just thoughts and I acknowledge them and let them pass.

Few of my friends did not have good results with medication.

I am also detached from my job, its only purpose is to make enough money to no longer need doing the job. Today I work to live and see tomorrow and the same thing tomorrow again.

I suggest talking to someone elder and with a more positive outlook on life, not from work. Preferably retired.

In summation- You are not your job friend. Not should it give meaning to your life. Live to fight another day. It helps to detach oneself.

I bought a windows license, it didn't come preinstalled with my PC.

I still want a refund. I feel pretty stupid.

Re:Ask HN: How do you keep up with HN these days? on Saturday August 15, 2026 @03:07AM (#49308424)
I'm sorry. Companies are not charities or families but like sports teams. We come together for a limited objective, where the company meets its objectives and I get paid for my time.

I was laid off last year along with many of my colleagues, some time before the layoff the group director had an impromptu meeting and declared we are working for the good of the world and that we should all feel aligned with this message to serve humanity - "Our mission is to empower every person and every individual organisation on the planet to achieve more".

No your mission is to pump the stock and return value to shareholder. My mission is to help you do it and get paid for my time.

And it turns out more often that not, that to serve humanity is a cookbook.

Re:Microsoft Fire IdTech Team at Id Software on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @01:17PM (#48820745)
I was fired by microsoft last year, Satya said the layoff was not due to performance reasons and he refused to elaborate what it was. In the job market I had to explain at every interview why I was laid off. People still ask me why I left MS to work at my current less prestigious company when the learn I used to work there and I have to sheepishly repeat the lie I have memorised to make them go away.

Even when I was at MS I saw a culture of always being in firing and hiring mode. They fired people who were perfectly good at their jobs and hired people who needed to be trained and needed higher salaries.

Sorry Satya. I just can't trust MS with my career anymore and I dissuade more people from going there everyday. ¯\(ツ)/¯

Re:Ask HN: What has been bothering you lately? on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @06:57AM (#48568559)
I have been working for 10 years and unable to afford a home to start a family.

I have about 350k USD and live in New Delhi.

VTI avoids these issues. It's float adjusted market cap weighted. More float allows better price discovery. So a company like spacex has negligible weight.
Re:Cisco Workforce Reductions on Thursday May 14, 2026 @02:28AM (#48131829)
Whenever a company does layoffs willy nilly frequently I stop trusting them with my career. The AI excuses are lazy.

I was laid off last year by one of the big tech companies, and they called me again for a rehire but I just dont trust them anymore even if they pay more. The layoff completely disrupted my life and I developed health issues because of the stress. Not worth the mental hassle.

I have seen a few workplaces which are more deliberate in their hiring and are not on 24x7x365 hire and fire mode unlike many of the big names. I would rather work in such a place rather than have 10 varieties of coffee and condiments in the pantry.

Frankly i'm pissed off.

Sorry for the people who pinned their hopes on cisco and were laid off yesterday. It's not easy.

Re:Free Textbook on Engineering Thermodynamics on Sunday April 26, 2026 @01:44PM (#47912217)
Engineering books are very expensive in my country. I want to give calculus a spin. Spivak is a hundred dollars.
I use archive storage class on google cloud, to store old movies and wedding videos, pictures of old vacations.

For everything else I use paid onedrive subscription. The biggest problem is user interface with s3 like storage and predictable pricing because remember you also pay for data retrieval and other storage apis, with dropbox etc you pay a fixed amount. Every year or so I roll over data into the bucket.

But for infrequently accessed data its fine.

I find myself completely outclassed by mathematicians in my own field. I tried to learn a little math on the side after my regular software engineer gig but I'm completely outclassed by phd's.

I am unsure of the next course of action or if software will survive another 5 years and how my career will look like in the future. Seems like I am engaged in the ice trade and they are about to invent the refrigerator.

Re:Show HN: Write It Down – Personal finance tracker on Monday October 06, 2025 @09:39AM (#45491313)
It's possible to do the same with google sheets using GOOGLEFINANCE function and I have been using it to track and manage finances since years.
Re:Math from Three to Seven on Wednesday October 02, 2024 @04:36AM (#41718457)
I have been trying to join/create a circle as an adult. I asked some of my online friends but no interest so far.
ACE 6. I did good career wise, failure was just not an option to me so I worked hard. At school I was put into accelerated classes for gifted kids. But I feel like I could have done a lot better with more support at home. I see that people get points for diversity etc. in college or hiring, but there is no such support for people who suffer silently, and even if there was I have too much pride to let others know just for some brownie points. Life was particularly hard before I found employment, roughly from the age of 18 to 26. That was also the period when my mental health challenges were more difficult and I had not yet learned how to cope. I have not yet gotten any ‘treatment’ for mental health issues. I got some money after making some fortunate investment decisions that allowed me to climb out of poverty, it might be trivial sum for most people out there but it was a lot to me. Lately I get feelings of being an orphan, just out there on my own and not having my own people to share things with or support in life.

My wife is startled sometimes when I react as I do, she doesn’t understand where it comes from. I have forgetfulness and emotional regulation issues. But she is a nice person and helps me out.

I worry about money and the future all the time.

I would like to thank my mom and God for everything, and Jensen Huang. Will delete this later.

Sorry for poor punctuation and english.

I am considering contacting the Employee assistance program for this. I have never used it and I am not sure if its a good idea.
Re:Japan Says 1.5M Living as Recluses After Pandemoc on Monday April 03, 2023 @12:39PM (#35426927)
I feel that is an answer for americans. There is no sports or arts classes where I live. Most people work and go home to watch TV. A lot of places in the world don't have such option with activities or outdoors.
Re:Japan Says 1.5M Living as Recluses After Pandemoc on Monday April 03, 2023 @12:25PM (#35426639)
I am suffering from this too, and I am not sure who to turn to or what to do about it.

I work remotely and all my interaction with coworkers is maybe half an hour everyday where we talk about work and nothing else. If I challenge myself to go to office, I find that its only about 33% occupied.

I have few friends but they don't call me anymore and live far apart. Tried to meet women but it didn't work out.
