A big part of the appeal for IRC to me is the not so low barrier to entry with tools like irrsi
Re:Ask HN: What info do you web scrape for? on Monday August 11, 2014 @12:24PM (#8163876)
Sports scores, statistics, etc are always high in demand for scraping and great to get people interested when learning scraping techniques.

yes, there were some truly tasteless tshirts in that list but when you click on any link prefaced with 4chan, you have to assume the worst.

i have to admit, reading this post to eventually come across a t-shirt with a pair of pants on it really made my day though

where does one fall in their list of choices if they are doing backend/server side code?

there seems to be no clear choice for that

Re:Show HN: Invest Your Money In What Matters to You on Tuesday June 10, 2014 @12:23PM (#7873488)
nice catch.

so is this site just piggybacking and creating custom portfolio's through motif?

Re:Show HN: Invest Your Money In What Matters to You on Tuesday June 10, 2014 @11:18AM (#7872995)
this reminds a lot of investing in real-life ideas at Motif (https://www.motifinvesting.com/motifs#catalog=our)
and by plain HTML, you mean plain Python installed and configured on your server/local
I'm not being facetious, but this "yet another static site generator" joins the list with 230+ other generators.

(see http://staticsitegenerators.net/)

Why do we need another one?

Re:Fat arrow functions in Javascript on Friday September 20, 2013 @12:32PM (#6418768)
This will be a much needed and welcome addition to ECMA 6.

If you're interested in a bit more of a comprehensive overview, Nicholas Zakas previously wrote an excellent article on arrow functions :

Re:AngularJS Tutorial: Learn to Build Modern Web Apps on Wednesday September 04, 2013 @02:51PM (#6329601)
I love that the example site being built in your tutorial is a fantasy football app, great choice.

Looking forward to the player draft functionality with socket.io

view the source for her snake game you'll see it's actually not that unlikely: http://jenniferdewalt.com/js/snake_game.js

following a few tutorials after a google search for "create snake game canvas javascript", it actually seems very likely:

I'd like to mention the font ProggyClean. After trying several fonts, this was the winner for me.

Re:CSS Front-end Frameworks with comparison on Thursday March 14, 2013 @05:10PM (#5377693)
Great list. What criteria are you using to sort this list?

I think it would be helpful to show the date of last development activity for each framework, be it a most recent github commit or release date of latest version. Some of the frameworks haven't been updated in over 3 years and it would be nice to distinguish these quickly.

"it runs Linux".....a specialized version of Gentoo to be exact.
Re:GitHub Survivor: a bug leaderboard for GitHub issues on Sunday January 06, 2013 @11:28PM (#5019338)
How do you address that somebody could take on 5 bugs that take 5 minutes to fix versus the guy who takes the 1 bug that takes 5 hours to fix?

Re:List of Twitter Bootstrap Resources on Wednesday November 28, 2012 @06:23PM (#4845393)
The only bad thing I see about Twitter Bootstrap, due to it's success, is that seems to be used everywhere and so many startup projects all look the same.

Do they all look different to people who aren't designers/devs? I don't know, but as a developer, when I see a new project I have become oblivious to the design and find it challenging sometimes to see past the "just another app built with twitter bootstrap" to find the application's true value

Re:Pickadate.js on Tuesday November 20, 2012 @05:46PM (#4811788)
looks like a single var pattern inside an immediately invoked function expression to me. works well and great for readability
you'd be even hard pressed to find a well upvoted and accepted answer on stackoverflow that suggested to do this type of implementation
Re:Show HN: Fun, simple feature tours for your website or app on Monday October 29, 2012 @06:34PM (#4714905)
also like something that was posted on HN not long ago, a company from Ontario, Canada who built software to do this but the name of their app eludes me.
