It may interest you to know that pagers are still a thing, Motorola still makes them, and I know that one major use case is volunteer fire departments

I used to work on Motorola Minitor 5 pagers. Looks like they recently released their newest model, the Minitor 7

I wonder if pagers are still used in hospitals? I imagine so

Re:Claude Code is now available to Pro plans on Wednesday June 04, 2025 @12:47PM (#44182716)
Looks like the link has been updated to remove references to Pro plans. Unfortunate

edit: they changed it back, and it's actually working now :D

The moving background is absolutely intolerable, I didn't last ten seconds
I haven't. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll try it out
I got into making hot sauces recently. I didn't really care for any of the results until I started fermenting them. Chop up ingredients, add brine, put everything in a jar with a fermentation lid that allows gas to escape. Then let it sit on the counter for a week or two. blend and maybe add a bit of vinegar. That's the basic process, and in my humble opinion, it's the absolute best way to make hot sauce

(YMMV, do your own research, there are obviously risks to letting food sit out at room temperature for two weeks)

Kecap manis is delicious, I get the ABC brand. It's as thick as molasses. Wonderful drizzled over some chicken rice
Heist (2001) - Directed by David Mamet

It's not very well known or particularly well reviewed. It just clicked with me, I've watched it probably a dozen times. It's about a jewel heist and the drama surrounding it

Looks like Perplexity includes sponsored results at the bottom of your searches, and my UBO isn't blocking them. They seem to be fairly unobtrusive, though, and they are labeled as such. For now, at least.

I was confused, especially considering this [1] is still very recent

Re:How good are American roads? on Wednesday November 20, 2024 @12:34PM (#42196291)
I'm an American, I lived in Germany for several years around the turn of the century. German roads that I encountered were far superior to American roads. Their construction is far more robust, the roads last much longer. And with German lane discipline (passing someone on the right is practically a cultural taboo, it's a prohibition that's taken quite seriously) they are usually a joy to drive on.

I watched this YT video [1] about the interstate system recently, I found it informative and entertaining

To me, the Eisenhower Tunnel in CO [2] is noteworthy. It crosses the continental divide at altitude. From what I've read and watched, they don't allow HAZMAT trucks to go through, because the risk is simply too high (well equipped fire/rescue departments are hours away, among other factors)

I had tons of issues with these Cloudflare checkboxes. I finally figured out it was because I use this extension [1] that disables HTML5 autoplay. I assume Cloudflare is doing some kind of thing where they verify that the client can playback media, as they assume that headless browsers or crawlers won't have that capability

Re:WebSockets cost us $1M on our AWS bill on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @03:11PM (#42068586)
I read the entire article and that wasn't my takeaway. After reading, I assumed that AWS was (somehow) billing for loopback bandwidth, it wasn't apparent (to me) from the article that CPU costs were the sticking point
Re:US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case on Wednesday October 09, 2024 @08:56PM (#41794480)
I was in the USAF in the early 2000s, stationed in Germany. Due to a dispute with DT, I ended up using long distance calling cards to dial (overseas!) into AOL to get online. It was very involved. I imagine I may have been the only person in the country doing this
I see. I don't use AWS much, I saw this [1] and assumed this was like the US g-cloud.

Re:We migrated our PostgreSQL database with 11 seconds downtime on Thursday January 18, 2024 @06:00PM (#39049143)
AWS has a G-Cloud for UK just like they have one for US, no?
My initial reaction was similar. I use the menu key, but rarely. I will certainly never use a copilot key.

It seems to be getting more and more common to leave your git repository completely undocumented. If you're releasing a software project on github, I want to read about it on github.

A basic README that outlines what it does, how it does it, and basic syntax - this is really easy. Table stakes, I might say. I can checkout your repo and I have everything I need to work

Re:The Knight Capital Disaster on Tuesday November 28, 2023 @02:33PM (#38450138)
This bit at the bottom was gratifying to read:

As of 2016, the engineer who did the update still worked at KCG. His entire management chain had been replaced, all the way up to the CTO.
Cheers! A step in the right direction.
I tried very hard to get onboard with Ubuntu's new server paradigm, I've been using Ubuntu on and off since 2005. Snap is what turned me away. My research (admittedly several years out of date) told me that it was impossible to disable 'auto-updating' of Snaps. Now I see that they're rolling out what is apparently a high availability service built on services deployed through Snap. I don't see how this is viable, if Snap is still dead set on updating things on their own schedule. I certainly wouldn't trust it without some in-depth testing and validation to ensure that Canonical can't remotely DoS me by pushing some new update that I can't opt out of.

My father was a welding foreman on the Byron plant. He always took great pride in that. Later in life he was a lineman, he liked to point out the huge transmission towers that he built as we drove past them

It's my understanding that the filet is preferred for dishes like this because it's not the 'top shelf' product that it is often made out to be

Steak au poivre, for instance, is traditionally prepared with the filet

Now using a ribeye, I would consider that a waste

Makes me wonder about an inflatable balloon antenna for amateur radio. I wonder how hard it would be to do this sort of fabrication (aluminizing the inside of a balloon) as an amateur

Re:The Moose Boulder Hoax on Friday October 27, 2023 @11:00AM (#38039378)
I went on a backpacking trip to Isle Royale about 12 years ago, and learned about Moose Boulder (without realizing it was a hoax) before departing. We inquired with some locals about the possibility of reaching it, and we were told to not even think about it. They gave us the impression that it would be hell, hiking through thick foliage without trails and whatnot, so we abandoned the attempt.

Isle Royale, though, was an amazing experience. It's the only park I've ever visited that doesn't have a litter problem. I was there for a week, and I didn't see a single piece of litter. I think the higher barrier to entry for this park results in a different sort of clientele, the sort that has at least a modicum of respect for the rules in such places.

Happened to me, in a canoe on a large lake. I had a lot of experience on small lakes, but large lakes also have large waves. Hadn't planned on that. It was either 'go with the waves' or go under
Re:The Negative Impact of Mobile-First Web Design on Desktop on Thursday October 26, 2023 @10:49AM (#38026327)
Many websites will completely alter their UI based on resizing your window. Sometimes I want to set a browser to take up half of a monitor so that I can put something else next to it. This often fails on modern websites because the UI becomes unusable after the window is resized

Re:The Midwit Smart Home on Thursday October 12, 2023 @03:20PM (#37861815)
I run HA at home, and my home is an apartment. I was able to buy some zigbee switches [1] that just 'snap' over the top of traditional light switches, after adding some castellated plastic washers under the screws that hold the switch cover in place

This means that instead of a light switch, there is a button. And when I relocate, I can just remove these devices from the switches and take them with me
