Many years ago, I read this article by Bram Cohen ( creator of bittorrent ) on how to become a better programmer and one thing he pointed out was that you can practice it by simply writing down your software architecture on paper.Below was his exact quote, (ref Great programmers https://bramcohen.livejournal.com/4563.html) "My suggestion for learning software architecture is to practice....
I been working on easyinfograph.com for a few months now. Plan on featuring it for product hunt when I am done with a few more features.

Is there a list of website that allows people to post and discuss new ideas besides HN?

What books should I read? What tools do I need? What components should I buy? Are there opensource hardware projects I can study from? Edit: I have a background in Computer Science and a thorough understanding of computer architecture.

What are some ways to find freelance jobs that require common lisp?
It would be nice if I can search for projects using specific programming languages. Also why can't I just upload the project I need people to contribute without using github?
I think your code is off by 1.
Just out of curiosity did you learn scheme primarily through books? Do you actually use the language on a daily basis? Maybe you are a lisp hacker?
Thanks for the tip, but when I tried to run it under mzscheme I got the error: map: all lists must have same size; arguments were: #<procedure:+> () (1). Also could you explain why set! and list-ref are bad?
I tried to recode what you did in scheme for practice
(define (pascal n)
(if (= n 0) (list 1)
(begin
(let ((L (pascal (- n 1)))
(ret (list 1)))
(do ((i 0 (+ i 1)))
((= i (- (length L) 1)))
(begin (set! ret (append ret (list (+ (list-ref L i) (list-ref L (+ i 1))))))))
(append ret (list 1))
))))
I have a question, why did git grow so popular? What was better about it?
Edit: To down voters I think this question is important because it helps us understand why certain softwares are successful despite other successful competitors. I am not trying to start a flame war on which version control system is better.
hi I got his error, on ubuntu 11.04. I moved the base folder to the neo folder but it still didn't work. Is it because it's missing the game data?

I have just install doom3 in my neo folder using scons (ubuntu 11.04). I typed ./doom.x86 and I got the following message. DOOM 1.3.1.1304-debug linux-x86 Nov 24 2011 00:27:04

I got a similar error on linux. How did you get it to work?
Anyone got this error?

I am getting the error, "scons: * [build/debug/core/sys/scons/doom] Source `/usr/lib/libz.a' not found, needed by target `build/debug/core/sys/scons/doom'.
scons: building terminated because of errors." Anyone knows what I should install?

we definitely need more stories like these to balance out the belief that doing a start-up is some how "easy". The reason is not to discourage people but to let them know what they are in for so that they can prepare better. It would also give some CS undergrads second thoughts about dropping out of college with the attitude that start-ups are easier.

There seems to be lots of post both recent and before discussing the inadequacies of a CS degree. Could anyone elaborate on how to fill up this gap for better preparation in the real world? What would a person who wants to start a start up need to learn on his or her own? Also, what about open source contribution. I realize most answers would probably follow along the lines of "work on your own...

It was used for my programming class, however the professor recommends K.R for experienced students who are new to C.

I noticed that my upvote doesn't immediately take effect after around 2 -3 minutes. Did pg implement this feature recently or is this just my imagination?
omg this is obviously april fools
How about creating a time lag for up-voting comments? The higher the score the longer you have to wait before voting?
"feeling good" seems a bit generic here. I doubt he means the same thing as inspiration. The competitive nature of chess and the fact that it is a "game", is usually enough to motivate someone to work harder after winning a few games (ie warcraft). Where as in writing and writing software there are more mental blocks and success and gratifications are generally slower, and also harder to get back on track if you start "feeling bad". So I think discipline is more important in activities that takes longer to feel gratified.
