Forums on Internet should balance things automatically. PG (or anyone) has no obligation to reply any question on any forum. Should someone ask a personal question? I don't know. Celebrities are always asked such question- I would not ask same question to someone like me.
Re:Ask PG: Can you do it again? on Thursday May 15, 2014 @12:24PM (#7750429)
Exact? No. Its about similar - like affecting same amount of people - may be totally in different field. Personally I am not concerned about money (after a certain threshold)- but other people may be interested.

If I had an option I would ask on the bottom of his essays. What PG is doing is little different than other successful entrepreneurs. It seems to me what he is doing is doing repetitively. But its just a question- it could be bad one though.

Re:Ask PG: Can you do it again? on Thursday May 15, 2014 @11:35AM (#7750031)
Luck could one factor yes- but its mostly a question about with enough work can everything man has done be repeated?
Re:Ask PG: Can you do it again? on Thursday May 15, 2014 @11:29AM (#7749989)
If you have all the knowledge and experience, you are who you are already.

I have not improved the world, but I still consider myself successful in personal life.

Ask PG: Can you do it again?

I have done nothing significant in life yet. Have not helped anyone or improved the world at all in almost any sense. But still it took me a lot of practice to get to where I am now. I am confident I can do it again and again given same amount of time and same attitude to life from same or little more limits I had and starting from any timeline from 1980 to 2014. Only thing it takes is same...

Like minded people - yes- that would help. Sometimes it helps when people thinks about computer startup process instead of shoes when you use the word "boot".

I have not shared anything on blog yet. The idea is actually very simple - not much thing to hide - but it is not easy to implement without at least basic knowledge in telecom and electronics. Here are the ideas- A video phone system attached to a TV + webcam that can be operated with only a remote control. As a side effect we have Netflix, Hulu-Plus, youtube etc. on it for free. I use arduino for remote control part using a infra-red sensor and it is connected to a beagle bone black. BBB controls the communication. I use SIP for signaling. It will to be sub 40$ I guess when custom built and manufactured as a single device. A media capable home phone - nothing new or special but hopefully easier to use than existing ones. Still need to answer why someone use it instead of Skype. I am mostly depending on its design rather than cutting edge technology.

All the parts work separately but need to make a solid device that does not fail. I have talked to my friends in here, Europe, Australia and Asia- it works (https://www.facebook.com/w3voice has some video call photo) - they don't have the device yet- but my system works from browser with webrtc as well (no plugin required for firefox and chrome). The ssl certificate has expired (was using a 3 month trial) so can not share the site now. But prototype to product seems harder than I thought while doing weekends only. I even needed to buy a wooden box for this. This is frustrating because I am sure I will need to change things before people finds it interesting. So, need to build one as soon as possible. As it is now it may be actually a bad idea.

And yes, I live in Seattle area in Washington (west one). I did not think YC or anyone would be interested to find a solo guy working from living room with probably a bad idea in the first place (I have not applied to any yet- including YC). I was planning to complete it in a few months and go for them. I got few people interested to buy, so will have some customers as well.

Remember McGyver? Inspiration to be a hacker for everyday life things.

He was my childhood hero who inspired me to be a hacker. I started visible hacking with electronics and then eventually computers. But the effect is much more broader in my life with lot of invisible and trivial ones. I feel that series has changed me forever- "there always seems to be a way to fix things" big or small.

Thanks for your thoughts. Its not the glorious part that is interesting- but to create something that helps people. Right now I am working on a hardware device that will make communication easy specially for older and challenged people. But if it works it should crate more than a few jobs (one of which can be mine).

Ask HN: How do you manage your obsession

After few years of reading more than a few articles on startups and more than hundred books (audible + kindle only) it is hard not to think about it good part of the waking time and harder not to talk about it at all. But your friends do not quite understand what you are talking. Specially when your family and friends think that, you have a job that pays, a nice family (this is true) and a...

Ask HN: Mongo DB and Django - which library to use

The choices are django-nonrel, third party ORM like mongo engine or platform specific code for mongodb. Django - nonrel seems very natural but not sure about the support/ future development or its quality. Does anyone use this two together? Which one you use and why?

Re:Thousands of login request in few days - hackers? on Sunday April 14, 2013 @02:19PM (#5547651)
Thanks. CAPTCHA/CSRF is not an option since it is meant to be an API called from applications. As a precaution make a phone call to verify the user. That guy went through all the things and theoretically we can actually track him down(costly though). I have blacklisted the phone- question is how many phone numbers do he have :). Added a per day free call limit to stop this for future attempts.

Thousands of login request in few days - hackers?

It seems someone wrote an application to generate many thousands of authentication request from authentication service we created. They used some phone numbers to verify account that seems temporary (acquired from voip service). This seems a little wired. Why someone would do that? He managed to make the system spend some small amount for making the calls but that is probably what they spent to...

Re:Gmail: please show my images on Monday January 21, 2013 @09:49PM (#5095234)
A switch would be good for some people I agree.

But, have you think of the fact that when you load images on various sites they can only track your IP and similar information. But when you open an email and if the image is from internet location it can be used to personally (through your email address)identify you and know that you opened the email.

Ask HN: How much sells/traffic you need to attract investors?

Not sure this is the right forum. I'll remove if the question is out of place. Our startup we are trying to found has about 10K unique visitors per month and average 500 unit sells. According to our estimate we need 30% more sells to breakeven (founders do not take salary yet - only employees get money and that fixed cost can not be eliminated). We tried to do a lot of tricks (blogs, seo etc.)...

Re:Ask HN: Can you review my startup auth2.com on Monday September 10, 2012 @12:12AM (#4498268)
Thanks. I'll add privacy policy. I do not know how to write one, but a compile of a few sites should work initially I guess.

Ask HN: Can you review my startup auth2.com

http://auth2.com/This is about two factor authentication in short. I support voice call, mobile push, phone application for OTP, image id verification and hardware dongle. The hardware dongle is currenty veru ugly- microcontroller dev board + realtime clock + 7 segment display + battery. I am not sure if I can produce a light weight and low power device cheaply.I know there are players like...

Re:Ask HN: What problem isn't already solved in iOS app store? on Wednesday August 08, 2012 @09:59AM (#4355547)
Rephrase your question- What problem a lot of people tried to solve but is still not perfect (almost all of them) - Then pick one you want to work on and make that better-
Re:Traction, how did you get it? on Wednesday August 08, 2012 @09:17AM (#4355326)
I am also trying to understand this- I wrote one loooong blog where you may find some information important-

http://www.starternotes.com/

It is mostly a compile from many resources and still working on it-

2FA can use smart card- The device with TPM capability may work as a virtual smart card- This video is interesting- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmTpdZAC4_s -

But Yes, I have to admit, for API, this may be overkill-

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on (elevator pitch)? on Wednesday August 08, 2012 @02:22AM (#4354230)
Auth2 provides 2 factor authentication service that secures websites, servers and corporate networks (VPN).
Re:Ask HN: Is Realtime Interplanetary Communication Feasable? on Wednesday August 08, 2012 @02:03AM (#4354186)
In our lifetime - No! Beyond that- I am not sure of the limitation of light.

Consider this- There is a lake which is 50 meters wide but 500 km long. You want to cross the lake. You are at the middle of one side of the lake. Now to cross you need to travel aproximately 500km if you follow the bank.

Now if your maximum speed is 6 km per hour yo need more than 80 hours.

Now you get a great idea to create a bridge on the lake- Time to cross is reduced to a minute or so. Now what you are doing is instead of walking one dimension following the bank you just bridged the two places using second dimension.

I do not know if it is possible to create a bridge among two places using another dimension or not- but it is alwaws a possibility and you can do it by travelling less than speed of light.

Have you considered 2 factor authentication? If you are concerned about security 2FA can give you more protection- - Maruf
