Would a self-hosted update server for desktop apps be useful?

Most Electron and desktop apps today rely on GitHub Releases + Squirrel or a SaaS service for auto-updates. I’ve been working on a project called faynoSync that lets you self-host an update API instead. Some features it supports right now:Channel-based releases (stable, nightly, beta)Platform/architecture-aware updatesCritical update enforcementBasic telemetry aggregationIntermediate build...

Ask HN: Would you use a self-hosted update server for desktop apps?

Most Electron/desktop apps rely on GitHub Releases + Squirrel or SaaS for updates. I built FaynoSync, an open-source self-hosted API server for managing app versions and updates. It supports multiple channels, platforms, architectures, private apps with auth, multiple S3 providers, flexible user management, telemetry, and critical updates.Repo: https://github.com/ku9nov/faynoSyncMy...

This looks really cool! Which programming language is your app built with? And how do you update the application on the client side?

I’m asking because I have an open-source API server project that I’m working on, and I’m interested in learning more about how you’re doing things.

I want to thank you for those 9 points and the stars on GitHub. Now the ShowHN is showing up under show, which is great! I understand this app is quite niche and might only be interesting to companies that distribute their own software. But there are no powerful open-source alternatives like this out there — that’s exactly why I’m building it. Thanks again!

Show HN: FaynoSync simple auto updater API server written in Golang

https://github.com/ku9nov/faynoSync

This application is a simple API server for automatically updating client applications. It allows you to upload your application to S3 and set the version number. The client application can then check the version number against the auto updater service API. If the service has a newer version, it will return a link to the updated service, and the client application will show an alert. The API...
