And what if it’s Chinese servers? Like, iCloud stuff but for Chinese nationals in China?
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @06:09PM (#50281627)
So, for a commercial POS system to work, you’ll need a home view and an iPhone in its vicinity to work? Why not just use an iPad? I see loads of places using iPads or even just iPhones.

I am so glad that I bought so much new tech before 2025 that I can make do without them for a while now.

These prices are insane and there is no sign of things slowing down.

The crow and rocks experiment was a staple “moral story” when I was a child in India. Interesting that someone actually validated the story!
Re:ESP32-C3 Adblock on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:37AM (#49990374)
I did the same (until my RPi zero stopped working). Both the devices share same vertical IP address and if one ever went down, the other would take over without any delay.
Re:LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:11PM (#49614281)
The only reason it is on my network is that I need it for home automation (via home bridge). I'll have to see what else I can do.
Re:LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @12:47PM (#49612881)
I have connected it to my network and then blocked it off the internet via Pi-hole. That way, I hope, it'll not try to scan for other open networks.
Re:AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems on Saturday September 05, 2026 @04:48AM (#49574585)
I find the use of AI like quicksand.

The more I use it, the more I have to rely on it to make changes/ fix things in the same system. In the end, I come out feeling empty; no intuitive knowledge of the system "I" built or fixed.

Code review is important but it does not replace the mental model I am able to build when I do all the steps of software development manually without AI.

Re:The mathematical beauty of hyperbezier curves on Saturday August 15, 2026 @08:38AM (#49310085)
Related: Last year I had the pleasure to work with Bezier curves to make a very specific UI for an app I was working on.

I wrote down a bunch of posts on how I achieved the UI primarly to explain the process to my future self[0]

As a mobile developer it was so much fun to do something other than building a CRUD app.

I wonder if it makes sense to do the nand2tetris course for an absolute beginner since it too has compiler creation in it.
Someone, claiming to be from the Raycast team, in the original HN thread said that they were not aware of the advert or were involved with it in any manner.
For a deep dive into the topic, I will recommend the book - Means of control by Byron Tau [1]

..and It’s Actually Worse Than You Think
Re:Hypergrowth isn't always easy on Monday February 02, 2026 @09:10AM (#46856222)
It is not a cartoon, it is an interpretation of the position in Bauhaus style.
I don't think so. There might be some, but definitely not a majority.

My biggest complaint is with Firefox - it works fine on my older Mac, but crashes on Tahao and only works after a system restart.

They need to fix Mac OS first. It’s one of the worst OS I have ever used - apps keep crashing, random UI/UX glitches and bad decisions overall.

I’ll probably ditch Mac if this degradation continues.

How does one start acquiring skills like these?

Unfortunately, it is not the most accurate. If you wear full sleeved clothing which cover your Apple Watch, it will report wrong numbers.

Re:Why Is the World Losing Color? on Wednesday April 02, 2025 @03:16PM (#43560430)
As an Indian living in a western European country - I very much prefer the gray/ neutral colors here. I always found the excessive and ugly use of color in India overwhelming. Though, I agree, a bit of more colors in winter wear would be nice.

I have a similar setup with Tailscale and Nginx Proxy Manager.
> Are you streaming Netflix through your tunnel as well?

Yep!

I have a RPi 5 running as a Tailscale exit node in my parent's house in a developing country. The said country does not care much about what people download. qbittorrent-nox makes it very easy to download stuff by just using my browser. Plus, I have access to local, region locked streaming content and very cheap Netflix subscription.
Re:Man-Computer Symbiosis by J. C. R. Licklider (1960) on Wednesday July 03, 2024 @12:35PM (#40867608)
Took me about 6 months to finish it. But it was such a fun read! I would put it in the leagues of Making of the Atomic Bomb and Emperors of Maladies.
The science and tech is usually always there to tackle problems. It's the political will and policymaking ability which pulls things back.
What does misuse particularly mean here? I couldn't gather that.

Does a child's toy, which is supposed to represent a first aid kit, with the red cross on it constitute a misuse?

Can a random private hospital not use the red cross?

Years back I made a circular progress bar library for Android. Nothing special but it was something that was missing at that time. Surprisingly, 1000+ downloads monthly (according to JitPack) and I still get occasional issues reported on GitHub.

Apple India has one of the worst after sales services. If something goes wrong with your device, they'll charge 2.5k (INR) to just look at it and tell you what is wrong with your device.
