News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Was afraid this was going to be another HackerSlop, but happily surprised, this was quite refreshing

Call your representative and talk about privacy and right to repair.

Vote for politicians who fight for privacy and right to repair.

Now that AI exists, doing things properly has become impossible for humans.

He was probably active on devotionalart badamtish

Would be interesting, but the ai images and writing makes me trust it less.
Re:Real World Haskell, Modernized on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:44AM (#50141549)
https://wiki.haskell.org/index.php?title=Real_World_Haskell was a great book, but it is nearly 20 years old. Haskell has changed some. An update would be nice. It seems jaror has begun the work.

There is variety though! There is jong gouda, jong belegen gouda, belegen gouda, extra belegen gouda, oude gouda, overjaarig gouda ...

(Well, tbf also edam, maasdam, geitenkaas, limburger)

Quite a lot of our bugs in production have been in seemingly less impactful changes. How do you know what's impactful a priori?

Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @06:38AM (#49906961)
Hm, I could not put it down. Was sneaking in reading while waiting for gcc to finish or bank web site to load.

Now I want to read it again.

I don't see people arguing against some regulation. I see people arguing against basing your regulation on the narrative sold by openai and anthropic.
Re:25 Years of Mass Surveillance Is Enough on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @03:57AM (#49723335)
Fediverse doesn't actually solve a problem I have. I'm not on xitter or instabook or myspace and don't want to be. The one saas i really need is email, which is 1. Already decentralized and 2. Getting harder to self host every year due to the escalating war between slopspammers and security measures.

Signal solves the async messaging and phone surveillance satisfactorily for my "threat model".

Re:Who gets to define the rules for AI? on Monday September 14, 2026 @02:47AM (#49692856)
Broken is a spectrum, not binary.

(Some years ago, people argued that "it's already broken so voting in the crazy guy who wants to shake things up will flip the switch from broken to non-broken". But they were wrong.)

Idunno, maybe the point of the project management system was to be able to make grandiose statements about your progress
Re:The Essential Question: "What should I read next?" on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @05:17PM (#49278673)
Well, it sometimes happens if you read about the bool, e.g. Pynchon's V put me onto Heart of Darkness

I wish sports would be sports, business be business, and politics politics. Whenever they mix, it is for the worse.
Re:Emacs Is a Lispboard on Friday July 24, 2026 @02:30AM (#49031868)
You don't have to combine work and personal stuff in Emacs. You can for example set it up to just connect to work email and work jira and work slack and work clankers etc.
Oh wow that really drives home how bad agentic ai is compared to what most people use it for

Was this written by AI?

Re:Scarf has moved away from Haskell on Friday July 10, 2026 @04:17PM (#48864704)
Even without considering vibecoding, compile time and compiler/lsp memory usage are my main concerns with Haskell. In fact, I'd say they're even more of an issue if you're going without LLM's since they affect human beings ;)

There was researcher who said that democracies are strengthened by

* Good libraries

* Local news papers

* Volunteering

which all have to do with increasing community, seeing real people with different perspectives, gaining real knowledge.
