Re:Verizon to Buy AOL for $4.4B on Tuesday May 12, 2015 @08:34AM (#9531239)
This is not about dial-up or media. This is about ad tech. Aol is done a very nice job of acquiring sold assets in this space. I think this is a smart move.
Re:Google Will Eat Itself on Monday March 17, 2014 @09:18AM (#7414825)
"We generate money by serving Google text advertisments [sic] on a network of hidden Websites."

They are not really ads that are viewable by consumers. Most likely bot traffic.

Re:Why the World Needs OpenStreetMap on Tuesday January 07, 2014 @09:22AM (#7017388)
Thanks for the recommendation. I've been looking for this exact thing. Go Map is ok, but PushPin really does have the "I'm here now and want to add the location easily" use case nailed.

Side note: This illustrates how crappy the App Store is for discovery. I've searched for all variations on "OSM editor" and never found this one.

Re:”No one at Google is Returning Our Calls” on Friday December 27, 2013 @01:23PM (#6971839)
I'd agree. On the ad exchange side, their customer support is the best in the industry. But then a lot of that DNA comes from DoubleClick where they have always needed to provide sales and support services to a wide variety of customers and partners.
Re:Diary of a programmer with no clue about marketing on Thursday November 07, 2013 @08:56AM (#6689274)
Marketing as a service has been around for years. They are called Ad Agencies.

Re: on Tuesday May 28, 2013 @12:14PM (#5780881)
+1. Same reason the "turn off your email" advice falls on deaf ears with me. Too much of the information I need to do my job lives in my email.
I suspect this was 1x1 image pixel similar to what is routine practice in online advertising to track site visits.
Re:You should blog even if you have no readers on Monday April 15, 2013 @12:44PM (#5552451)
Maybe. But I think the act of making it public is an important distinction. I don't post to my blog very often (and traffic is essential zero), but when I write I try to make it worth reading. I'm certain I would not take the same care with a diary entry that would never see the light of day.
This list of sites will change in 60 days. This sites are like pop-up store fronts for ads.
Re:Uncovering an advertising fraud scheme (NSFW) (2011) on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @02:24PM (#5402661)
Two other articles today named ad networks that are making money on this type of fraudulent traffic:

That's not going to work if it requires voice commands to operate.

Re:Are You Doing Research? on Wednesday December 05, 2012 @12:19PM (#4877255)
I like this as a definition of research in a corporate environment: "We investigate things that are too risky or time-consuming for our product design groups to look into, with an eye towards making our company money in the future."
Re:Would the economy be better off without MBA students? on Wednesday November 28, 2012 @04:49PM (#4844968)
I have a business degree and an MBA and I agree with this statement. If I could go back, I would major is something more technical.

But, I also have an MBA. And I would get that again.

Re:Hey Yahoo, You’re Optimizing the Wrong Thing on Tuesday September 18, 2012 @04:05PM (#4540212)
I'm speculating here, but my guess is that part of the reason it sells out is because the person buying it is measured on CTR. If this placement has a high CTR it is going to lift the overall media campaign and make the buyer look good.
Re:$200 for a Fake Security System on Friday August 17, 2012 @12:22PM (#4397215)
That's a false equivalency. People who don't vaccinate themselves (or their children) put everyone at risk.

People who use low cost tricks to protect their property only put themselves at risk.

Re:The Twitter Political Index on Wednesday August 01, 2012 @02:07PM (#4324585)
Here is a good USA Today article that provides a bit of background about how this works:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/story/2012-08-01/twitt...

I was very surprised to read in the article that:

"The Twitterverse isn't particularly politically biased, say the Republican and Democratic pollsters who worked on the project, because while Twitter users overall may be younger and therefore more likely to support Obama, conservative tweeters tend to be more active."

Re:Google’s Marissa Mayer Tapped as Yahoo’s Chief on Monday July 16, 2012 @04:42PM (#4252539)
I assume you mean Elop became CEO of Nokia, not MS.
Re:Seriously? Ads? on Wednesday May 30, 2012 @12:04PM (#4043380)
Facebook data is not useless for assessing credit risk. People with high credit scores are likely to be connected to each other via social networks. The converse is likely also true.

Although it is controversial, banks seem to be starting to look at this.

Re:The Beer Game -or- Why Apple Can’t Build iPads in the US on Thursday April 05, 2012 @12:21PM (#3803266)
Yes, I did this in business school. We called it the "Bull Whip Effect" because a small movement on one end of the supply chain caused a dramatic impact on the other end.
This is pretty spot on with what I've seen up close. Specifically:

1) "Throw [y]our normal engineering practices out of the window." - We treat Data Science very much like the "R" in R&D. We point them generally towards a problem and give them time and latitude to solve it. Trying to fit that into our normal scrum process is impossible.

2) "Data scientists are going to end up building things that need to be translated into production code." - Our hand-off between Data Science and Engineering can be pretty messy. Getting stuff into production efficiently is an ongoing challenge.

3) "Trying to explain some of the hard math that's going on to the entire company isn't a productive use of time." - This point is pretty self explanatory. I get in pretty deep on a regular basis and it gets over my head quick. It can be very hard for the average account manager or marketing person to keep up.

Re:WordPress Launches Google Adsense Alternative, WordAds on Tuesday November 29, 2011 @01:10PM (#3291384)
This is actually pretty interesting. Federated Media recently bought Lijit[1] which has a pretty solid ad exchange. Federated also has an exclusive deal to rep WordPress sites[2]. Combining these two things will allow buyers to access a huge swath of long and mid tail inventory programmatically through the Lijit exchange.

Its nice to see small publishers getting more options in how to monetize their sites. A healthy ad ecosystem is required ensure we all continue to get access to quality, free content.

[1] http://www.federatedmedia.net/about-copy/press/federated-med...

[2] http://www.federatedmedia.net/about-copy/press/fmp-partners-...

This is a pretty unfair. He seems self-aware enough to know he probably shouldn't be releasing stuff to production. But there is a long way from "learning to code" to "releasing production code."

Re:Pivots are for the lucky. There's a better way. on Tuesday June 28, 2011 @01:07PM (#2706185)
That's the exact point I was going to make except I would call it evolving. Either way, same thing. Not really a new concept.
Re:Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (June 2011) on Wednesday June 01, 2011 @11:03AM (#2607564)

Re:Hack us, and we'll bomb you on Tuesday May 17, 2011 @04:00PM (#2557637)
No one is saying we'll go to war if a hack happens. The policy makes clear to potential adversaries that these types of attacks would be considered an act of war by the US and make clear that there could be a military response.

Its a bit like in the Cold War when the US said it would respond to a nuclear attack in kind. Making clear how you intend to respond can be a deterrent.
