Ask HN: How to Become a Go-To Person?

Some context: I am in the process of constructing a house. Recently, I contacted a lot of people in areas such as mortgage loan, building contractors, architects. To my surprise, hardly anyone followed up. That implies, they must be getting a lot of work. We could say the same for doctors, lawyers etc.One the other hand, if we look at the software industry, everyone is replaceable no matter how...

Thanks for the good input. Glad it worked for you. I had read a little bit on support/resistance, higher high/low theory etc. But I find them very boring. ( In fact everything around technical analysis). As I said, I am not looking at trading. The idea was to use technicals for a better entry price.
Thanks for input. I want to keep things simple. So not looking at puts etc
Thanks. Very well said. I agree with you. I am actually passionate about non price data like cash flows, balance sheet, income statement, PE, EV/EBIDTA, etc. But I have seen a lot of long term fundamental based investors talking about using technical analysis (price data) to get a better entry point. In that context, I wanted to try technical analysis. To be honest, I dont like technical analysis. Find it very boring.
Thanks for the input
Thanks. You are right. It is quite complicated.
Thanks for the input. Nope. I never really liked options etc
No evidence. But I have seen a lot of fundamental based investors talking about using technicals to get a better entry point.
Thanks. Thats interesting. I have seen a lot of people follow this strategy. The problem is, what if the new high is the top?
Thanks. I think fair price is subjective. Gone were the days stocks had reasonable valuations.

Ask HN: How to use technical analysis for long term investing?

I am not a fan of trading. I look at the fundamentals and buy stocks with the intent to hold for long term. One of the mistakes I make is buy without looking at the technical analysis. This can incur considerable opportunity loss or real loss. So I am planning to apply technical analysis to fundamental analysis. Here is my thought process.1. Shortlist the stocks based on the fundamentals,...

Re:Ask HN: Been writing code for 40 years and can't get hired on Monday December 27, 2021 @09:55AM (#29702933)
therealdavesky , I am sorry to hear that. I suggest, dont get demotivated. Keep trying. I am sure you would find one. Good luck.

@all, Is this a general trend for experienced devs? Lets say, someone doesn't have a gap in resume and is well versed with the current tech, system design etc and the current employer is fairly reputed. (Say top 25 in terms of market cap in the US). Will this problem still hold? My understanding is that, at 20+ yrs experience, people expect us to be in leadership roles such as director etc. But then, not everyone can get to that level.

Requirements: Nice UI, CRUD, REST API to begin with.

Didn't get. Could you elaborate?

Ask HN: Hobby project, what frameworks to use?

I want to get started with some hobby project. Confused because, there are way too many frameworks. After a lot of research, I have zeroed in on Vercel+ Supabase. Any feedback or alternatives?Note: I am hands on with tech stacks. So, I am not keen on frameworks which completely abstract the underlying tech. But, ease of use and quick development also is a criteria.

Thanks. Thats very useful.
Thanks. Interesting
Thanks for the useful info. I am not sure open to job is a good thing to do. People might assume the person is desperate for a job
Thanks. By familiarity, do you mean using it in the day job?.
Thanks for the info
You are right. I am a little reluctant to do so because my current employer/colleagues will also notice it. Anyways, lets see
Thats intersting. Thank you
Thanks. That gives some confidence to me. In fact, I too have done a lot of POC around new tech like elasticsearch etc and I am enjoying it. But my actual job doesn't involve any of these. Unfortunately the recruiters insist on using it in the actual project.
I didn't mean to say 20+ yrs of experience is an advantage. Its the other way around. My worry is that the application may not even be considered because of 20+ yrs of experience. Skill can be proved only after getting an interview.
Thanks. Yah. 2 weeks is not enough. But I could sense the overall trend. Yes. I need to make my resume marketable. My linkedin activity also is empty. Although, I have done a lot of POC's, none of them are in public places like github etc. Agree with you that skills, quality of work etc matter the most. But that can be proved only after getting an interview call.
Thanks. You are right. Not working on a particular tech should not be the reason. Fundamentals are more important.
