Re:Enough on Tuesday July 04, 2017 @08:44AM (#14695511)
Since DHH started writing, there have been 800 generations of starry-eyed startup people with unexamined motivations. He can do his thing and there's more than enough regard for the value of it.
Any civilization advanced enough to build a Dyson Sphere would by definition be one capable of extreme, long term focus. Since ennui is the enemy of long term focus, they'd probably have conquered it.
Re:Show HN: English-speaking jobs in Germany on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @04:39AM (#8589067)
Great work! I wish there were one of these for Russia.
Re:Let me develop your web app – for free on Saturday November 08, 2014 @08:18PM (#8578732)
Great idea! I emailed you yesterday.
If it turns out our entire universe is a simulation anyway, then what's the difference? The cruise ships walls are a simulation of a simulation, and our memories of them after returning home are a simulation of a simulation of a simulation. Nihil Sanctisne?

Easy: use cloud storage with 2-factor authentication.

This seems to be more or less exactly the same as http://jetstrap.com
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool? on Saturday October 26, 2013 @09:10PM (#6620278)
I bought a 4-letter domain (edofo.com) on Namecheap for the standard .com price but now don't know what to do with it. It just sounded like a good company/product name.
Re:A Holiday in Honor of the Korean Writing System on Saturday October 12, 2013 @03:22AM (#6537674)
Hangul is great, but don't try to use it for English. Try writing "Larry really loves the zoo very much". You get "Raeri ri-a-ri reo-beu-seu da joo bae-ri meo-chi".

In other words, you lose the L/R and V/B differences, and words like "much" can't end on consonants, so you get "Muchi".

Hangul has no sounds corresponding to "V, F, R-L, Th, and 'woo'".

Re:Numbeo - comparison of cost of living around the world on Monday August 26, 2013 @10:16AM (#6277159)
Actually, the prices are right on target for Seoul, South Korea.

Unlike most websites of this sort, I'm surprised to find the information accurate.

"Forensic reconstruction after a famous restaurant fire in the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Kentucky confirmed that many of the victims sought to pay before leaving, and so died in a queue."

This is surprising altruism.

I can't guess how many web apps have lost me because, instead of signing up right then and there, they waited a few weeks to put a beta link in my mailbox. By then, I'd moved on.

You don't sell anything by telling your customers to come back at an indeterminate time later. I'm here now, so let me give you my attention (and possibly money).

Re:Google flights on Tuesday July 02, 2013 @10:45PM (#5982125)
"Sorry, flights from South Korea are not currently supported."

Which is fine, because local websites always have 30%+ cheaper rates than ITAsoftware, Hipmunk et al.

Ah, these codes have already been used.
Re:Taking Apple private: Makes sense but nobody has the money on Thursday April 18, 2013 @10:11PM (#5574365)
Is it crazy for Apple to use its money to create its own "bank", then loan itself the money needed for a buyout?
"At press time, sources confirmed this is why Cipher is the best in the business."
Re:Intab: Quicklook for your browser. on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @07:51AM (#5400288)
This is great! To make it even more quicklook-like, what I'd like to see is an option to:

* change keyboard combo to Spacebar (I never use it while browsing anyway)

* on keycombo press, open the link the mouse is currently hovering over, without needing to actually click the link

That would make it even better for me, but it's already looking very useful.

Re:ZenPen on Wednesday January 30, 2013 @04:15AM (#5138708)
This is fantastic! I teach classes and need a quick way to jot something onto the screen. The one piece that's really missing for me, or 2 pieces really, is the ability to make big headers and bulleted lists. If you could process Markdown in real-time (on Enter), that would be super!
Re:Features Unique to Opera Browser on Saturday January 26, 2013 @12:06PM (#5120912)
"but hey, it's something" is usually not worthwhile.
Re:Ways to Learn to Program Online on Sunday October 21, 2012 @11:06PM (#4681683)
I live in South Korea and can't get to San Francisco for a 12-week stretch. But you have a tremendous idea here and I'd love to be a student.

If you could compress the in-class time to 4 weeks and let me do the rest remotely, and offer a price-point at roughly one-month of my salary or less, I'd be all over this.

Re:Little Nemo in Google-land on Sunday October 14, 2012 @11:47PM (#4653666)
If you view this on Google Korea and follow it to the end, the first search result is a torrent of the DVD.
Re:Apple Apologizes for Its Maps Problem on Friday September 28, 2012 @11:11AM (#4585922)
They could trivially bring Google Maps from iOS5 to iOS6... if Apple wanted them to.
Task List apps occupy this interesting position in which, in the long run, it's easier for developers to build the thing (tweaking one or two costs/benefits) than for users to switch to using it.

Other things in this category include: web browsers, acne creams, computer mouses.

Re:Facebook Didn't Kill Digg, Reddit Did on Saturday July 14, 2012 @01:22AM (#4243223)
The way people here go about disagreeing with one another is perhaps my favorite part of hacker news.
Re:Korean Messaging App Has More US Users Than Path on Friday July 06, 2012 @01:09PM (#4208625)
I live in South Korea and use KakaoTalk ("Katok"). I haven't exchanged phone numbers with a Korean in the past year who didn't already have the app.

I know because the moment I add a phone number to my iPhone address book, KakaoTalk notices it and adds that user to my contact list, along with their photo.

Everybody has a KakaoTalk photo, many have 4 or 5. I haven't been able to figure out how they do that. I can only find the setting for one user pic. Perhaps they do it with the associated app, kakaostory, which is sort of like a blogging engine on top of the Kakao platform, if I understand it.

Re:Live CERN Higgs Announcement in 20 Mins on Wednesday July 04, 2012 @03:21AM (#4198092)
Right now, he's presenting general stuff that everyone in the room already knows, including him. It's just a summary of the status of the project up to now.

He could have practiced this 6 months ago.

Aaaand... at this very second he's starting on the new stuff, I think.

Re:Live CERN Higgs Announcement in 20 Mins on Wednesday July 04, 2012 @03:16AM (#4198082)
Why is the speaker in such a rush? He seems to be under a constant time-crunch. He keeps saying he's going to go over time and that he'll speed up.

Didn't he practice this before? Can't he just tell us what he wants to tell us, and skip over the rest?

Wouldn't Apple or Google be able to prevent others from stealing out their domain names from under them? Wouldn't Steve Jobs or Bill Gates be able to? I don't know the law with regard to this, so I wonder if you're right, and there really is no resolution process.

Ask HN: A porn-like site stole my [firstnamelastname].com domain. What to do?

I accidentally let my personal domain name, myfirstnamemylastname.com expire, and a Japanese porn-ish site immediately scooped it up. That was over a year ago, and they still seem to own it.It doesn't make sense for them to have it, since I have an obscure Eastern-European name, and it's just that with a .com on the end. This looks bad when potential employers, clients, and friends...

Fantastic! Thanks for pointing that out; I don't know how I missed it.

Our printers are set for A4, so trying to print letter-size causes them to beep and refuse to print without user intervention.
