kombinatorics on Hacker News
I too share this grand delusion. I know it's a delusion, yet I can't formulate a solution. I'm a first year right now, I share the same story from high school, to rejection from the university I wanted to go to, and finally to the low grades in university. Thanks for sharing the story, it gives me insight on where my behaviour will lead. Thank you.
This + Data Mining & Neural Networking.

As a first year studying pure mathematics and computer science, I've been exposed to many different algorithms, trees, data structures and etc. Many of these are fascinating and I always tree to think of examples of how I would be able to implement them in the real world. However, I am starting to find it hard to keep track of so many different algorithms, data structures, tree and etc. Is there...
What's the point of finding the trillionth number in pi? The same is implied here. We do things, just because we can.
Right click > Inspect Element.
This is the greatest teacher/tutorial.
Simple yet difficult to conjure. This is awesome!
Although I'm only 19, there are a ton of things I wish I could go back and talk to past me. Too many times have I missed out on opportunities and lost advantages.
Ah well.
Wow, thanks for the info. I always liked proof based math more than the applied math. Linear Algebra is going to be a lot more interesting now.
"Hey Charlie, how does it feel to have a golden ticket?"
That is one hell of a line up aha. Is it possible if you can tell us what school you went to? My curiosity needs feeeeeeding!
"Do your work. Don't be stupid."
That is surprisingly effective.
ugh, seems like everyone is doing a cs major now a days. kind of diminishes the value of the degree, sort of like a business degree aha.
A little too minimal, it looks like one of those scam sites. You might want to give it a redesign. Other than that, I think this is an awesome idea, can't wait for it to come to my area (Toronto).
Most people have a misconception of a CS degree as if it teaches you how to code. Computer Science is neither about computers or about science. It's a math and a logic degree. With a CS degree you should be able to code, conjure algorithms and all that jazz out of anything. It teaches you how to be more efficient, write better algorithms, use your hardware to its full potential and etc.
Look at the opportunity cost then make a decision. If I were in your shoes... if I'm making more than $90k AND =<25, then I wouldn't go for a degree. However, education never hurts right?
tl;dr: CS teaches you how to be a better problem solver. You probably know more about "programming" and "languages" than most CS majors.
wow, didn't know dribbblers lurked hn. nice to see that.
Aha, I just said that to be the odd one in all the "I'm a female" comments. There is nothing wrong with the question you asked, it's simply a survey. I guess knowing you're not the only female, in a (obvious) male dominated industry, is comforting.
2012 has been my worst year by far. I failed countless times. Hoping 2013 is better.
Invest in design as well. Many people neglect the importance of how a product looks. "If you can't make it good, at least make it look good".
Looking through other people's code. Chromes/Safari's Inspect Element was my teacher.
Everyone knows PCs are the superior machines. However, Macs get things done, in a very simple elegant way. Also, a Mac is needed for iOS app development. Macs can also be used for Android development. Win, win. Most start ups are based on mobile app development now days.
"When the world says, 'Give up,' Hope whispers, 'Try it one more time'."
That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
Oh man, that is classic aha.
My field being Mathematics and Computer Science, the next big thing is really Quantum Computing. On the theory aspect, the biggest "success" would be to solve P=NP.
When you know for sure he is going to slap his name on it, create bugs in the code on purpose. When everything is going wrong, you fly in like Superman and fix your "bug".
There are so many ways to screw this guy over. It is an opportunity for you to climb to his position.

Does a major in Mathematics AND Computer Science do better in the industry opposed to just a Computer Science degree or a Software Engineering degree? Also, share what you majored in or what you are majoring in currently.
