Re:Google Will Stop Reading Your Emails for Gmail Ads on Friday June 23, 2017 @02:02PM (#14621277)
Wee yeah - it says they will no longer scan emails.... Instead they will use your youtube data, search data, website visit data etc.

Interesting - as an advertiser I generally recommend using the email address "sent from" as your main source of targeting but combining that with specific keywords within the gmail campaign can be super helpful at finding people at the exact right time.
I don't remember merging them. It must have happened years and years ago. I haven't worked for that company in a VERY long time.
Or, you know, let us unlink accounts or change the username, two pretty normal and reasonable things to request.
Oh man, mine too! I have to use the web app!

An interesting idea but I find it hard to see this taking off and becomming the norm. They need to sell it to Google or something so they don't have to rely on the browser.

Also, rewarding users with "premium content" or let them "donate it to publsihers" doesn't seem too realistic.

I like the idea but I see some major hurdles before this takes off.

It looks to me like they want to do a Netflix like system but for long form content. The $5 goes towards hiring a specific writer to do a specific in depth article (or series). Unless I am misunderstanding.

It's 2017, update your website footer! http://updateyourfooter.com/

Only very slightly related:

When I was a teenager I made music under the name shark^^bait

The ^^ is what made it stand out from others.

The issue is there is no efficient way to search for that phrase with the special characters.

I have no idea if I can still find the absolutely god awful music I made back then.

Using the phrase match in google just searches for sharkbait which doesn't help at all.

It doesn't help that years later a little movie called Finding Nemo came out.

Re:Show HN: Soda Player, a “modern” player app on Friday January 13, 2017 @11:12AM (#13391875)
Simplify. What do you want people to do?

Looking at this you want them to live chat, social media it up and go to product hunt.

Remove all that and make people download it.

Also, no USP above the fold? Kind of important. "Loves the web" tells me nothing.

Ask HN: Would there be interest in this kind of service for startups?

The product would be a review of your digital marketing plan and current set up. It would be a one time fee that includes a full work up on your website, product (eg. if you have a web app can you leverage it for SEO?), email automation, paid search, etc.I'm thinking pricing might be around $500 and it would probably be done within a week.Would be done by a seasoned professional with years of...

Re:The Elephant in the Smartwatch Room on Thursday December 15, 2016 @03:42PM (#13188182)
We really are in an awkward place because people simply aren't seeing the value in smart watches just yet.

The technology is also just a bit behind.

People see it as geeky and not really solving any problems they have.

Personally I am a fan of the new hybrid watches that are coming out.

They look great (they look exactly like classic watches, because they are), the battery issue is gone (modern hybrids last up to 6 months or longer) and do what people really want a smart watch to do:

see if that notification is something worth taking your phone out for. (most hybrids have different symbols or vibrations or lights that show what it is and who its from).

Throw in the activity tracking and controlling your music from your wrist and you have the perfect combo.

If the marketing is done right I can see hybrids really taking off.

Re:Pebble's next step on Wednesday December 07, 2016 @11:48AM (#13123908)
I got royally screwed. Yesterday my 4 month old Pebble Time Round burned my wrist and killed itself, today they announce they no loner honour the warranty.
Re:Show HN: CSS Mono – A Typeface Designed for CSS Coding on Tuesday November 29, 2016 @11:51AM (#13064199)
It looks kind of nice I guess? The l and i really mess with my eyes and I'm not sure they make CSS any easier than any other font.
Have you done any A/B tests to see if this improves conversion rates over a traditional form?
