Re:Quant Job Interview Questions (2009) [pdf] on Saturday November 12, 2016 @01:13PM (#12939202)
If you can come up with a profitable strategy then you can still be hired or just trade yourself. Without this there is no point being a quant. Besides quants still need developers - those integrals will not help building maintainable trading apps.

I would say those questions are for recent graduates who want a junior quant role.

It makes the meat harder?

Knockout/Angular/React/Ember/Backbone devs are staring with amusement :).

From immaturity straight to infertility.
Re:Ask HN: What does a C++ fullstack mean to you? on Thursday November 03, 2016 @07:18PM (#12868984)
For him "full stack" means "good". E.g. which smartphone do you want? A pink one! It's that kind of IQ and erudition level.
Re:Gameroom on Tuesday November 01, 2016 @07:09PM (#12850962)
Who would want to tarnish the Oculus brand with Facebook's "social" slot games?
Re:Gameroom on Tuesday November 01, 2016 @07:07PM (#12850951)
It looks like one of those game pop-up ads - only full-screen. Yeah, I am going to install you crappy client to download your crappy freemium games.
Re:Japan’s Disposable Workers: Dumping Ground [video] on Monday October 31, 2016 @06:17PM (#12841466)
The real everyday sexism.
Re:Be angry with yourself, not Apple on Sunday October 30, 2016 @01:24PM (#12830969)
That's the argument: either suffer intensely once/twice with Apple or spread your suffering evenly over 10 years with Linux.
Re:Apple just told the world it has no idea who the Mac is for on Saturday October 29, 2016 @05:13PM (#12826416)
People shouldn't have complained about their software and icon re-design. Now they are trying to distract us with hardware problems!
Re:Strategies of Human Mating (2006) [pdf] on Saturday October 29, 2016 @04:42PM (#12826249)
>> In contrast, women tend to engage in especially vigorous mate retention efforts when married to men who have good jobs, high incomes, and devote a lot of time to status striving.

That is unless government steps in to guarantee 50% claim of men's resources regardless of retention efforts.

Because ambition drops slower then opportunity: https://rationalmale.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/smv_curve1....
What? I don't know a single developer out of ~10 across multiple companies that would have to work more than 8 hours plus 1hour lunch break. Outside of London you get 37.5 hours weeks. Hell, I know contractors who work 1-2 days a week from home! But yeah, the money is crap mostly.
Re:Ask a Female Engineer: Interviewing and Company Culture on Thursday October 06, 2016 @06:23PM (#12656620)
You should've laughed to divert any suspicions. When someone makes a racist joke about me I chuckle and wait for my turn. Because I don't want to watch what I am saying all the time. He did not make an attack, he lowered his shield. And then suffered the consequences.
Re:What's the Longest Humans Can Live? on Wednesday October 05, 2016 @06:07PM (#12648381)
The article was written by an average mind for an average mind, discusses natural humans and considers only nearest future.
Reminds me of Node.js vs IO.js: sort out your crap or we fork.

Asians seem to be doing fine, though? Oh, I forgot, the [hated_group_name] is redefined until it includes all people who achieve academically. Also her sexist remark is really not necessary :(.

http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Melanie_Upfoot

"Melanie took over as the math teacher for the girls, however she did not teach math, she used the subject for female empowerment, talking about "how numbers make you feel," "what does a plus sign smell like" and "is the number seven odd, or just different" while disapproving of men treating math like a problem that needs to be solved, none of these being actual math subjects as math 'is' about solving problems."

Re:Announcing Azure Command-Line Interface 2.0 Preview on Tuesday September 27, 2016 @06:12PM (#12593661)
Well, the entire premise was "your script-kiddie GUI code, but on server!". Microsoft on the other hand is just chasing the ball (Node/Python) or where it will roll (TypeScript, C#).
Re:IBM says Swift is ready for the enterprise on Monday September 26, 2016 @05:40PM (#12585830)
Yes, IBM developers are close to finishing Swift Playgrounds now.
Re:IBM says Swift is ready for the enterprise on Monday September 26, 2016 @05:38PM (#12585819)
They pretty much said you should've been on the Apple's Swift language development team :). I mean, the shit is like only 2 years old.
Marrying an overweight/tatooed/feminist older woman is not much fun!
Re:Diversity fatigue on Sunday September 25, 2016 @10:09AM (#12575375)
"We increased diversity in IT!"

"Cool, you hired a dynamic Python dev, a static functional Haskel dev and a UX inclined HTML/C# dev?"

"Err... No, we hired a cartesian product of races and genders within Java skillset... But they sure have different worldviews!"

Re:Why Isn’t F# the King of .NET? on Monday September 19, 2016 @08:12AM (#12530715)
Some of reasons reasons:

1) F# team prefers an ivory tower of pure language design to making killer _new_ products like Akka.

2) Meaningful whitespace is a matter of taste and not some golden standard. I like my languages with punctuation marks in them, thanks very much.

3) Total global inference and ultimate succinctness is a matter of taste and not some achievement. I don't program in Brainfuck and ML.

This is totalitarian of course, but from the point of view of survival it's not a wrong move. A lot more guys would settle for overweight/older/single-mom etc. girls if the porn is harder to get. I bet they will ban sex robots when they arrive.
Re:The Metaprogrammer on Wednesday September 07, 2016 @07:40AM (#12442459)
I guess using some of my 8 logical cores for background static analysis is archaic now?
Re:The Metaprogrammer on Wednesday September 07, 2016 @07:38AM (#12442448)
"...I spend 10+ hours a day in my office..." - I agree that there should be an upside to a statistically shorter lifespan.

When you have only so much history, you need to take whatever you can.
Re:JavaScript (and Node.js) Continues to Eat the World on Monday September 05, 2016 @04:52AM (#12428986)
What is the link between craft beer, mustaches and fixed-gear bicycles?
I did not know it is possible to use a runtime environment, some platform libraries and a scripting language to make a game!
