There's way more people using chrome (right now) than this new browser.
I run https://getloaf.io/ an app which lets you customise SVG animations that are built into the app. Constantly plugging away for 4ish years now!
Re:Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011) on Tuesday May 02, 2023 @08:28PM (#35796175)
ChatGPT response: Infinity is not considered an odd or even number. In mathematics, odd and even are properties of integers, which are finite numbers. Infinity, on the other hand, is not a number in the usual sense. It is a concept that represents an unbounded or limitless quantity. Therefore, the concepts of odd and even do not apply to infinity.

My side project! After an unplanned hiatus (I guess everything comes and go in waves) I want to be more regimented and systematic about improving it over time.

Re:My First Piano: A Story of Hurt, Healing and Joy on Tuesday November 01, 2022 @07:54PM (#33429553)
Yes and no. Losing the "Oh, I heard you playing a new song" is a priceless dinner conversation that can encourage a child's burgeoning passion.
Re:My First Piano: A Story of Hurt, Healing and Joy on Tuesday November 01, 2022 @07:52PM (#33429534)
Experience: A piano doesn't have an on/off switch. It can't be anything but a piano. Electronic pianos can be guitars, drum-kits, or entire orchestras! It can feel more like a toy than an instrument, especially for younger children. So right off the bat, a piano will give you or your children focus when they sit on the piano stool.

Sound: a hammer hitting real strings vs a speaker replicating the sound. If a speaker gets dust in it or becomes damaged in some way, the sound is greatly diminished. Also, pianos are made of wood which vibrates. The strings at the higher end which aren't dampened vibrate. If I sneeze loud enough, the piano in my room sometimes hums with vibration. It's a living thing.

Yes, pianos need to be tuned and electronic pianos don't... but if you or your child is actually taking lessons and practising, you want a piano. Your technique, I think, will be much better if you learn on a piano with real hammer action vs an electronic piano.

I think the trick to buying a piano is taking your time and only buying the one that sounds right to you. Some people like a more warm, mellow tone. Other people like more brightness and brilliance. The "family" piano we have was purchased 20 years ago and it's a standard upright piano. It's absolutely rock solid, still sounds beautiful.

This funding amount is insane. Also, bypassing publishers (which I'm assuming what is happening) is quite clever too.

Came here to mention that advert. Just superb.
Re:AirPods don't “just work” on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @05:03PM (#30092641)
This is true... but I like the automatic switching when it does work :)

I try my hardest not to adjust Apple defaults too much because on the whole, I really like their design decisions and their UX. So I don't want to start straying too far away from their core defaults. It's a slippery slope :)

Re:AirPods don't “just work” on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @04:59PM (#30092579)
Basically, yes. That's been my experience. Even though I listed all of these annoyances, I still really like them :)
Re:Always Do Extra on Wednesday October 13, 2021 @05:21PM (#28857876)
Fantastic article. As a UI designer, I feel like the little bit of "Extra" work that I've done in my career has paid off extremely well.

Of course, you need a manager who understands the intent behind your Extra work is that it is mutually beneficial and that you strike more than you miss when doing that Extra work. If these fall into place, you'll be treated with more respect and will be given more autonomy which further encourages you to do what is right both for yourself and the company you work for.

That's been my experience in my relatively young career (7-8 years). This article sums up this concept really well.

It's interesting you equate HN with IG/Twitter/FB/reddit. While there are similarities, they are quite different from each other.

If you are worried that HN will become your last bastion, perhaps you could find other online communities where you have passions/interests.

100%. new reddit UI is soooo slow.
(Australian here) I took Home Economics and it was 80% cooking and 20% health and nutrition. Nothing about personal finance or money in there. That was in... 2001-2002ish.
Re:Fuckin' user interface design, I swear on Monday March 08, 2021 @11:55PM (#26395534)
Not only should the "END CALL" icon/button be more removed from the other more common actions like muting yourself, there should be a small "End call" label underneath or above the icon as well. Seeing what the buttons do without needing to guess or hover is important.

The only way to get good design is to hire good designers. Money doesn't buy good design. This UI was shipped by Google. They have money.

Re:Why I chose Electron.js for my side business on Friday November 20, 2020 @04:00PM (#25164880)
I hadn't thought of many of these things, thanks for raising them. The flip side of not using Electron.js and going for native development (which would help solve these points) would mean I never would have shipped Loaf. That's the issue I was facing.

Due to money (development costs) and ongoing support (being able to improve and maintain the UI with CSS) I had to find a tool that would work for me.

Maybe one day with enough time and money, I'll be able to develop some beautiful native desktop apps for macOS and Windows. That would be nice :)

Re:Why I chose Electron.js for my side business on Friday November 20, 2020 @03:50PM (#25164790)
Yes, the fact this issue is literally a one line CSS change is what attracted me so strongly to using Electron.js. I'm all for software engineers building amazing macOS/Windows apps, but I wouldn't have any idea how to make text non-selectable.

In CSS it's "user-select: none;" and you're done. Playing to your strengths is important when building a business so that's exactly what I did :)

Hey there, I had a look at your website and if I could provide some small feedback? Add an image here or there in your blog posts! You could start with free (but nice) photos from unplash or similar. You clearly have a lot of great content, but there's no initial visual "hook" to get me interested. Hope this helps and keep it up!
Hey, this doesn't sound too different from the adaptive diagnostic Maths Pathway (https://mathspathway.com/) has. It starts at Level 1 and retests all mathematical knowledge of the student until it reaches their zone of proximal development (ZPD). It's all within a classroom environment, but it means all the students are learning the maths that suit them, not a one-size-fits all which is the issue you are referring to I believe.

Full disclosure: i work at maths pathway.

Same. Emacs is my primary code driver during the day but for most things Notes is killer. One of Apples best apps right now.
