Off topic question. Which outliner are you using currently? I am finding it difficult to get good outliners for writing in Windows.
What I understand is that most users prefer to have native apps. Personally, I use websites for certain services (Remitly, Pocket, Instapaper, etc.), while all my friends who use these same services have the respective applications installed on their phones.

Having a native app means it is there—you can share things from other applications, and it is easy to see it as a distinct entity that can be opened by clicking on the icon in the app drawer (you can do this with web apps; it's just that now there are load times, you may need to re-login, etc.). Apps allow offline functionality, access to device sensors and features, etc in a more seamless way. I hope the progressive web apps are able to do these things in the future.

In addition to all this, if you are a sophisticated user with an eye for detail, even for native applications, you want the right kind of native app that uses the OS's own widgets, icons, and UI patterns. It is a tough place for new services to gain acceptance.

Try Docfetcher https://docfetcher.sourceforge.io/en/index.html

State of desktop search is very bad but this is what I use. It is of acceptable quality.

This is one of the few times I can tell Google closing down a product / feature is good. Less spam in usenet groups.

Word used to have the ability to post directly to Wordpress. Not sure if this works with the newest 365 versions.

Excellent. Thank you for sharing.

Why not keep both (copy, link) on a hover so that:

- it is easy to copy

- and navigate to that word's page

- and at the same time it will preserve the ability to click to select, too.

Why don't we see more powerful tools for thoughts?

>> Put another way, many tools for thought are public goods. They often cost a lot to develop initially, but it’s easy for others to duplicate and improve on them, free riding on the initial investment. While such duplication and improvement is good for our society as a whole, it’s bad for the companies that make that initial investment. And so such tools for thought suffer the fate of many public goods: our society collectively underinvests in them, relative to the benefits they provide.

This looks really nice. This is a video of author creating a simple counter with two buttons using imba. It demonstrates how CSS styling, code, and HTML works together in this language:

If anyone is interested to read more on this, read the enforcement action reports from the relevant national regulators: Canadian Public Accountability Board [0] and the US Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) [1]

These were internal training that could be used to satisfy professional accounting designation's annual Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements to renew your profesional membership (so you could continue using your chartered accountancy / CPA letters after your name).

"The Firm has designed its training program to serve multiple purposes, including to provide Firm personnel with technical instruction, to further their professional development, and to satisfy some of the continuing professional education requirements imposed by the accountancy boards that grant CPA certifications to the Firm’s auditors."

It was not just the juniors. Even partners are involved:

"Improper sharing of training test answers occurred among junior staff, managers, directors, and partners at the Firm."

I am surprised that this was self-reported, and I applaud them for that.

I am also a frequent user of Everything. If you are on Windows definitely give it a go. It is similar to the tool in this post but much more feature-rich.

You can load it with the following bookmarks to explore and filter (e.g., see all 4K files in your system, or in a directory) your files in a nice way:

Re:Widdler is a single binary that serves up TiddlyWikis on Sunday December 05, 2021 @10:55AM (#29450160)
I find the TiddlyDesktop to be too heavy for what can be done in the browser itself. Have you tried using Timmi [0] with your browser [1, 2]? I had problems initially with the file save workflow till I found Timmi. I use it with Firefox and sync with Dropbox. It hasn't failed me and works smoothly.

>>

Timimi is a web-extension accompanied by a native host that allows you to save and backup your standalone HTML tiddlywiki files anywhere in your hard-drive. Once installed, you can save the tiddlywiki files without any extra steps, like the original Tiddlyfox addon.

Timimi also provides users with 4 backup strategies, viz:

- Create a backup Every nth save

- Create a backup every nth minute

- Customised Tower of Hanoi

- First in First Out [3]

Re:Ask HN: Great Laser Printer on Friday March 05, 2021 @12:02PM (#26359102)
I don't have a laser printer recommendation, but you can consider using an e-ink based reading + note-taking devices like Boox (10.3") and remarkable2 for this purpose.

But I understand that paper is superior in some respects (say, side by side comparisons).

Re:Ask HN: What was a book that changed your life? on Thursday December 24, 2020 @05:17PM (#25531993)
Do you have a link? When searching for this I am getting a lot of Avengers related material but no related books.
Great to see a browser integrating feed reader at a time when popular websites are removing support for RSS/Atom feeds. Hope others will follow suit.
Re:The Walkman, Forty Years On on Friday July 03, 2020 @07:56PM (#23728733)
Sony TC-50 is a cassette recorder that could be considered as a predecessor to the Walkman; it even went to the moon with the Apollo 11 crew [1].

Off-topic question:

Since this is a thread on Walkman I'd like to ask you on any dedicated music player that you'd recommend?

Re:Julia as a CLI Calculator on Friday June 05, 2020 @11:25AM (#23429600)
One good thing about the Emacs calculator is the sheer number of features available. I don't use many, but occasionally use the financial functions, and they are really great. Any suggestions on programs out there with financial functions?

See Andrew Hyatt's Emacs calculator for Financial calculation tutorial: http://web.archive.org/web/20171218022230/https://plus.googl...

Re:Julia as a CLI Calculator on Friday June 05, 2020 @09:07AM (#23428035)
Since this is a calculator topic, I'd like request your input on which calculators you use.

I use the Emacs calculator (M-x calc) and XCalc (http://www.tordivel.no/xcalc/) as I like to use RPN calculators. The Windows 10 calculator is painful and slow. XCalc has a mini mode, where it will sit as a small, single line without distracting you too much. I like that feature very much.

One thing with Emacs is that I forget the shortcuts for non-frequent calculations that I'd have to go and search for it.
