There's a really fun game from 2018 called Yoku's Island Express where the core mechanic is pinball-like. It's a 2d side scroller, looks gorgeous

That was fun, I love the splash screens in JetBrains' products. A lot more work goes into them than I realized.
Re:Ask HN: ML Papers to Implement on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @01:04PM (#34507397)
I've been working on implementing this too! It's been fun trying to debug problems by figuring out how to reduce it to the "bare minimum" to repro. Ex: does it work if I disable positional encoding? Does it work if I have only one sample per ray on a single image dataset? Etc

Re:Researchers shrink camera to the size of a salt grain on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @09:43PM (#29400069)
That's mentioned in the article

> Enabled by a joint design of the camera’s hardware and computational processing, the system could enable minimally invasive endoscopy with medical robots to diagnose and treat diseases, and improve imaging for other robots with size and weight constraints. Arrays of thousands of such cameras could be used for full-scene sensing, turning surfaces into cameras.

There are existing swallowable capsule endoscopy devices like the PillCam[1], the entirety of which is 11mm x 26mm[2]

I think this is key. The idea that we can not only feel thirst, or think about thirst, but also think about thinking about thirst!

This is great! Bookmarked.

One complaint I have is the low-res cover images. I'm on a 4K screen and the cover images look really blurry. I can't make out the subtitles of books.

Also, the double-click to close is a unintuitive. I'd much prefer to use the back button

I don't have anything to add to the discussion, I just want to thank greggman for going out of his way to help me understand a simple webgl issue a few years ago.

That isn't a CPU-related issue right? The CPU would be completely powered down when hibernating

I had one of these! It came along with a fun little game called Merlin Racing, a sort of proto-Mario Kart

Noob physics question: I assume this talks about stars close enough that we can receive their light. Can we say anything about the number of stars & galaxies that are further away than that?
Re:Ask HN: What was your favorite website from the 1990s? on Friday January 15, 2021 @02:07AM (#25787899)
cartoonnetwork.com

There were a lot of fun Flash(Shockwave, as it was called back then) games!

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? on Friday January 15, 2021 @12:14AM (#25787259)
Neat! I think it'd be useful to have a little blurb under the name of the medal to describe what its for. Like:

Turing Award

for contributing major technical innovations to the field of computing

(I for one didn't know what an Abel prize was)

Re:Ask HN: How have you fared working remotely this past year? on Saturday January 02, 2021 @09:30PM (#25618790)
1) Fully remote

2) ~10 minute bus ride

3) Not too well. I work at a lab as a grad student and miss school and all its facilities

4) Pros: eating out less and improved my cooking skills much Cons: too easy to stagnate in terms of learning/making progress

5) Nothing in particular, just glad that I still have the opportunity to work despite the situation

6) For me, no. Its nice to have the option to work from home every once in a while, but in general I prefer going to a physical workplace. (it helps that my commute was very quick)

When tethering to a desktop without WiFi. And assuming wifi-usb dongles are not an option. (They can be a little finicky on certain Linux versions)

Yup, my bad. Fixed now. Random colors is the default in the matter.js renderer(and I'll admit it looks very pretty)
Re:Bead Sort on Friday October 02, 2020 @06:56PM (#24667870)
I love the runtime analysis of Spaghetti sort:

> Preparing the n rods of spaghetti takes linear time. Lowering the rods on the table takes constant time, O(1). This is possible because the hand, the spaghetti rods and the table work as a fully parallel computing device. There are then n rods to remove so, assuming each contact-and-removal operation takes constant time, the worst-case time complexity of the algorithm is O(n).

Re:Bead Sort on Friday October 02, 2020 @06:54PM (#24667861)
I'm taking a graduate algorithms class right now, and stumbled upon the bead sort wiki page.

These methods are quite interesting! The bound of O(n log n) only applies when using the traditional greater/less than comparison model
