Re:The Rise and Fall of the Manufactured Home – Part I on Saturday July 16, 2022 @06:20PM (#32122468)
I believe that is because when you finance a house you're financing the land+house combination, with the land making up the majority of value in most urban areas - when you finance a mobile home you are only financing the home, which depreciates (unlike the land component) - hence its a higher risk loan and therefore more expensive to finance.

FWIW The Internet's development was funded by DARPA - The U.S.'s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. For better or worse defense/offense has driven significant innovation for humanity, which has created many non-violent related benefits.
Somewhat tangentially related to people being afraid of Racoons carrying rabies, a Racoon risk people should actually be aware of is inhaling a parasite from their feces by mistake (i.e. sweeping/leaf blower, or children playing in a sandbox or yard where racoon does their business)

The phase 1 study mentioned in this article:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7323835/

("Dr. Dedhar and colleagues previously identified a unique compound, known as SLC-0111—currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials—as a powerful inhibitor of the CAIX enzyme")

Out of curiosity - you mention that in the 90's there were a number of TV shows featuring prominent black characters but there isn't anymore. Why did you decide the solution to that problem was to create a black-focused distribution platform, instead of production company focused on creating new shows of similar quality to those in the 90's - has something changed about the market that would prevent shows like those that were successful in the 1990's from being successful today?
The link I provided from the FDA says:

"There seems to be a growing interest in a drug called ivermectin to treat humans with COVID-19. Ivermectin is often used in the U.S. to treat or prevent parasites in animals.

The FDA has received multiple reports of patients who have required medical support and been hospitalized after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for horses."

The FDA has a page on Invermectin for Covid treatment, which provides a reminder that veterinary drugs are not designed for human consumption.

https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/why-you-shoul...

"For one thing, animal drugs are often highly concentrated because they are used for large animals like horses and cows, which can weigh a lot more than we do—a ton or more. Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans.

Moreover, FDA reviews drugs not just for safety and effectiveness of the active ingredients, but also for the inactive ingredients. Many inactive ingredients found in animal products aren’t evaluated for use in people. Or they are included in much greater quantity than those used in people. In some cases, we don’t know how those inactive ingredients will affect how ivermectin is absorbed in the human body."

The math is $1,000,000 is the average price of a house in Toronto[1]. You usually need 20% down for a house at $1M or more[2]. Therefore you need $200,000 downpayment, which at $11K / year is about 18 years, assuming no compounding (which at least today is basically the case currently in Canada with interest rates where they are).

It should be noted though that it is pretty rare to reach $175K salary in the GTA before turning 30 (Average household income in Toronto is sub $100K[3]). Therefore for the majority of people it will take more than 18 years to build up that down-payment, which could be where the number in the article came from.

If you're saving using after-tax dollars, savings 10% of 170K top line is therefore not $17K.

For interest, according to https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax-resources/canada-income-tax-c... net on $170K is $111,547, meaning closer to $11K / year

Bitcoin is an almost perfect exploitation of humanities fatal flaws (greed, unwillingness to acknowledge externalities - i.e. selfishness). It's that old SF-trope that the cause of many of humanity's biggest problems is humans.

FYI there seems to be something wrong with your registration flow. I entered my email on the homepage, was brought to a login page (https://app.procoto.com/Identity/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2F) Click "Sign Up" under don't have an account, created an account, clicked the verification link, brought back to login page, when I try to login nothing happens - page just refreshes, no error message of any kind.
Congrats!

Just a heads up, as a semi-happy webflow customer: your customer service chat bot / the way you hide methods to contact customer service is very frustrating. The first time I ran into a technical issue I almost considered just cancelling my account and moving elsewhere because I couldn't figure out how to speak/chat with a human. There are many services I spend less money on monthly that have infinitely better customer service. Ultimately a friend provided me with your support email and I got a response there, but was shocked that wasn't listed anywhere on your website that I could easily find..

Re:Bitcoin's market cap is now higher than Tesla's on Thursday January 07, 2021 @09:43AM (#25671557)
Price is set by the intersection of an ask and a bid; that the fact that a minimum of two people are willing to trade something at a specified price doesn't mean that thing is "successful", or even has value to society (i.e. fine art in private collections, POGs, Beanie Babies, etc...). Nocoiner's don't have a need for bitcoin, similar to me not having a need for fine art - it has nothing to do with what the price is set at.

Bitcoin is an almost perfect exploitation of humanities fatal flaws (greed, unwillingness to acknowledge externalities - i.e. selfishness). For that reason I think demand will continue to increase for Bitcoin / it will continue to increase in value.
Re:Ask HN: What's the best way to move $1M around the world? on Sunday December 13, 2020 @02:42PM (#25409454)
Deposit into a bank that has a presence in both your current country and the country you are moving into. Any other method will likely cause you more headache.

Can't help but feel this would be a lot more immersive with a VR headset instead of the screen.
You are correct, I did a poor job of summarizing the linked article and should have mentioned the Bloc's role in negotiations as well. Unfortunately I can no longer update my original comment now but am glad you highlighted this, I agree the only point I was trying to make is there is more than one moving part here.
A little more context: What's not mentioned in this article is that the Liberal party, currently in power, has a minority government, and therefore needs the support of either the NDP (left of the Liberal Party) or the Conservatives (right of Liberal Party) to get things done. NDP was pushing for extending the financial aid, which is likely a significant political reason why the liberals chose to extend CERB (in addition to not wanting a massive number of evictions to occur all at once...). Did you ensure your new domain was indexed before doing the switchover? that seems to be a common mistake - people just turn off one domain and turn on the second domain the same day.

I've had success with launching the second domain (resolving to the same server as the first domain), waiting for the pages to be indexed, then 301 redirecting the old domain to the new domain / submitting the request via webmaster central.

I believe re point #1, it's this study: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.03.09.20033217v...

Abstract: "32 HCoV-19 (SARS-2) has caused >88,000 reported illnesses with a current case-fatality ratio of ~2%. Here, we investigate the stability of viable HCoV-19 on surfaces and in aerosols in comparison with SARS-CoV-1. Overall, stability is very similar between HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1. We found that viable virus could be detected in aerosols up to 3 hours post aerosolization, up to 4 hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel. HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1 exhibited similar half-lives in aerosols, with median estimates around 2.7 hours. Both viruses show relatively long viability on stainless steel and polypropylene compared to copper or cardboard: the median half-life estimate for HCoV-19 is around 13 hours on steel and around 16 hours on polypropylene. Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days."
