That's part, I think not to dissimilar from a jeep, people buy them for the "lifestyle". Plenty of people take them off road, but plenty also like the idea that they could go off road.
I'd argue that the consolidation of the chip industry in Taiwan has had the most impact here. If/When China does move to take over Taiwan the global chip supply will be devastated and countries are well in their right to want to diversify from that. If anything, POTUS statements just also solidified the point that like Taiwan, they should not rely on USA or any other country for that matter. Hence why so many countries are pushing for some level of self sustainment.

Im not too familiar with the term Glasshole, but on long dark plane rides, if I want to use my laptop I feel like a lighthouse, even with lowest screen brightness. If I look like a dork with it on while doing some light gaming or movie watching, that is an OK price to pay to not disturb others around me. But if you are talking about just general out in public, then it absolutely gives dorky vibes. On the train, or in a coffee shop or something, a laptop just looks much less conspicuous.

Is the Glasshole thing more geared towards recording people in public? This headset has 1. bad cameras but 2. a much better privacy posture than meta.

For DCS only, I wonder how this slots between a Q3 and a bigscreen beyond. The beyond with no controllers is probably about the same price all in as the 1TB, but would be better screens and lighter. If you dont care about the standalone stuff it might be another good option. The frame does bring more versatility, but at the cost of battery/weight. Wireless VR in sims is unbeatable in terms of immersion though.
Re:Steam Frame starts at $1059 on Monday September 14, 2026 @01:58PM (#49701117)
If use for solely VR Gaming, and you don't care a ton about the privacy aspect, it is a hard sell against a new or used Q3. However, for myself personally I love the idea of it as a device I can tinker with and have full control over. I would love to also replace my laptop with it while traveling. Especially with a small wireless keyboard it has a good chance to replace my laptop for tinkering/gaming on the go.

With the price increases it is likely not a good value for an average person, but for myself and some other tinkerers I think it is very acceptable.

Similar experience, so i just use my garmin watch to pay. Similar compatibility as google pay, but since it runs entirely on the watch it does not check against play integrity.
Really cool work on making your own rocket motors.

I wonder why he calls it a MANPADS (Man portable Air Defense System) It does slightly resemble a Manpads, but with a GPS based guidance system it would not able to be used for air defense, even conceptually. Typically manpads would use something like an infrared/optical or radar guidance system which would run way more than $5. This does seem like a cool home made AGM-176 or similar. There's always been a side project idea in the back of my head about what the cheapest IR or laser guided RC Plane launched rocket would look like. A cheap rocket design powered by some model rocket engines that could be used for a drone -> drone intercept cheaply.

Awesome job taking a fun idea into reality. It's really impressive to see the design work

Re:Conbini Wars – map of Japanese convenience store ratios on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @02:53AM (#46598327)
If you are referencing the size of the initial commit that's 99.9% geojson. 56k conbinis takes a lot of lines. Since I was using this as a project to learn leaflet, there is also code I copy pasted from plugin getting started sections and what not. Also some plugins were old and unmaintained so I opted to just put them statically in my assets so I could also modify them easily as needed.
Re:Conbini Wars – map of Japanese convenience store ratios on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @02:52AM (#46598321)
Hey there I made the site about a year ago or so because I noticed around my apartment is only Lawson's, so I got curious to see and find how common those types of places are. I used ai for CSS since I can't stand it. But this was a project mostly to learn and play with leaflet
Re:Conbini Wars – map of Japanese convenience store ratios on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @02:47AM (#46598295)
I do have the data to do that, I struggled with colors and overlap/readability. With how much interest the sites been getting this year maybe I should do a v2
Re:Conbini Wars – map of Japanese convenience store ratios on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @02:46AM (#46598292)
Lmao I never thought I'd see a site I made pop up here, other than when I posted it maybe a year ago or so. Thanks I'm glad y'all like it :)
Do take that article with a grain of salt as it is South China morning post. While in this article they do call out that recently the CCP was ridiculing Elon for taking up too much space, in space. So I can give them some credit on that.

As for the state of these networks, G60/Qianfan had a plan of ~650 sattelites by the end of 2025, but currently sits at 108. They hope for ~1200 by the end of '27

Just before the end of the year the GuoWang constellation hit 136 of their planned 13,000.

For reference starlink has launched over 10k satellites to date with ~9,400 in active service.

Im sure the constellations will grow, but they have been experiencing the pains of scaling, especially with 1 use rockets. SCMP loves to pump up these crazy plans and massive numbers as a national pride win, even when they are not feasible or still really far off.

Re:$5 PlanetScale is live on Sunday November 16, 2025 @01:35AM (#45943224)
Hearing a $5 tier on planetscale was cool and I was thinking about using it for a future project, but those specs are just way too low to be worth it for $5/mo. I think I will just get a $5/mo vps with 32x the CPU (probably more as this is 2 x86 cpu cores vs 1/16 arm) and 8x the ram for the same price. The stats, insights and dashboards are cool, but for hobbyist projects that's too steep for the specs you get in my opinion.
Re:Linux gamers on Steam cross over the 3% mark on Sunday November 02, 2025 @10:54PM (#45795702)
Going on 2 years of linux only, between Debian and Endevour, other than linux nvidia drivers crapping themselves basically every update its been awesome. I do miss Fusion360 and League with friends, but its been overall very good and I recommend it to anyone on the fence. Break free.
Depends on the service but for the most part googles infra has its own stack that GCP is built on top of. There is always initiatives going on to get more internal stuff running on GCP as opposed to the internal infra directly, but none of them have really stuck that I saw.
Don't most washers and dryers have timed start like dishwashers do? I always remember mine having pictures like that but maybe that's just not a common thing
Re:Google Play Integrity Device Recall Beta on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @11:42AM (#45028108)
Maybe I am just a bit naive on the under the hood workings of the play integrity system, but I would imagine most of the devices not passing attestation are just Rooted or 3rd party roms. Those can easily change around keyboxes and mock stuff out (for now at least) to try and pass these checks, would that not also spoof device id making this void? I guess you could also use this to store info on devices that are not spoofing stuff, like device level bans for a game or something. Maybe that's more the use case here rather than the continued war against enthusiasts.
Re:Japan: Apple Must Lift Browser Engine Ban by December on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @09:36AM (#44811823)
Apple having such a dominant hold of market share in the smartphone space gave a lot of leverage when negotiating royalties with Sony who makes the felica stuff. From what I heard it was basically just gifted to them, because if Apple says no we wont support it, then you lose a huge amount of users. Whereas with other manufacturers they pay on a per device basis tracked by the underlying osaifu-keitai stuff. If you are rooted though it is usually just 1 flag or something you need to change. Been using my US Pixel 6 for years daily on my commutes.

Show HN: Mapping the top 1k r/Earthporn posts into a heatmap and GeoGuessr thing

https://earthporn.kikkia.dev

I was curious about the posts on r/earthporn and where they all came from since the PNW is seemingly over represented. I pulled the top 1000 posts and then using a mix of GeoGuessing myself, as well as seeing if LLMs could Geoguess too I mapped them all out onto a heatmap. I Also added a minigame to guess them yourself. Writeup in the github readme. Enjoy, thanks :)

Good feedback, I will see what I can do. I agree, I originally wanted to also use logo based icons.
Ill post the backend code to the github soon, and there you could easily change the diameter of influence each store has.

Show HN: Interactive map of the convenience store "turf war" in Japan

https://conbini.kikkia.dev

Technologies used: Leaflet (frontend) Turf (Geojson generation and Voronoi generation)I noticed that my neighborhood is all Lawsons, so I got the location of all Conbinis and ran some basic analysis to see if these pockets of brand territory are common.I haven't worked much with web frontends before, so feedback is welcomed. I also have some ideas to maybe expand upon, like making the territory...
