News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Weird, I thought this whole story was a "snoozefest" according to the same author a few weeks ago. Why are they still writing about it?

>How are you going to sell ads to that?

I'm reluctant to type this, but there's definitely a few ways they can monetize the experience. Just look at how some other companies have monetized their users:

- Roll a video ad inside of a modal popup before showing you the result of your query/question.

- Give users a number of free queries/day, then prompt them to pay a subscription fee for "unlimited" queries.

I'm sure they'll find a way. You might not like it, but they'll figure it out.

"Two State Farm employees told WWL-TV that the restrictions apply in Georgia, Louisiana, Oregon, Washington, and Pennsylvania. The restrictions do not apply to current policyholders, only to drivers who are looking for new policies."

Looks like it's not just Louisiana. I wonder if they'll be extending this to other states, or if other insurers will be following suit? I haven't been following this issue, but I feel like Kia and Hyundai should be doing some sort of recall to fix the problem instead of allowing their customers to suffer, it can't be good for PR.

Based on the username I think it's safe to assume they're a quack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quackery
Re:Yahoo is making a return to search on Monday January 30, 2023 @08:34PM (#34589638)
They're using Bing to power their results, and have been since 2009. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo!_Search
I wouldn't say they increase the chance of getting hired directly, but the skills, endorsements and recommendations will all increase your chances of a recruiter finding and contacting you, so it's a good idea to leverage them. It's really just SEO, you have to have the keywords on your profile if you want to show up when recruiters are looking for people with those skills.

Here's a few other tips that might be helpful: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140320151331-142790335-11-s...

So you're just going to ignore the massive trail of breadcrumbs because someone references a bible passage?

Might be a good idea to forward the email to Facebook if you haven't already: [email protected]
I really like the photography and music so far. The games are probably a bit easier than I was hoping for, but it looks like they become more challenging as you level up so I might just need to grind on it for a little bit longer.

My only complaint is that for some reason the music wouldn't play for me until I opened up the settings menu and toggled it off and on again, at which point it sounded like it was playing two songs at the same time. Not sure if it's a browser issue on my side (Brave), but the problem seemed to fix itself after reloading the the page.

Anyways, congrats on the launch!

Do you think the Twitter internal team discussing their methods back in 2017 understood what was going on? https://twitter.com/mtaibbi/status/1619029835858444288/photo...

"The detoxification of masculinity, progressives say, is a messy and necessary process; sore losers of undeserved privilege don’t merit much sympathy."

It sounds like the author is getting exactly what she wants, not sure why she's complaining.
Hadn't thought of those use cases, but it does seem like it could be pretty helpful in those scenarios, especially when doing extended narration for training and tutorial videos. It is kind of worrying that phone scammers, hackers and other bad actors could leverage this technology for much more nefarious purposes, which was the thought that drove my initial reaction.
The technology does sound interesting, but I'm having a hard time seeing how this could be used for anything good.

Bing has made a lot of bets over the years that haven't really panned out, maybe it will be different this time.

Granted, Microsoft is much less reliant on Bing's ad revenue than Alphabet is on Google's, which might allow Bing to really change the search experience without having to worry too much about selling ads. It's going to be interesting to see how these products evolve in ways that serve both the user and the business interests behind the search results, especially if we start seeing VC backed AI search engines pop up which don't need to focus on existing advertiser revenue.

Re:How Twitter Rigged the Covid Debate on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @09:13AM (#34148791)
I don't know if we can call it outright lying, but going from "you don't need a mask" to basically saying you shouldn't be allowed in public without one seems like either incompetence or corruption on the CDC's part. You can argue semantics all you want to try to justify their behavior, but that is what people see and it doesn't increase trust or confidence in them as an organization.
Re:How Twitter Rigged the Covid Debate on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @08:33AM (#34148434)
Wouldn't it have just been easier to explain it than to lie to the public and then continue to deny and defend the lying after it's already been exposed?
Re:How Twitter Rigged the Covid Debate on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @08:21AM (#34148347)
So they still don't know if masks work? Can we get a concrete answer on this at some point? It seems like this type of back and forth messaging is the problem. Maybe we should all apologize to people who questioned the need to wear masks if we still don't know whether or not they're effective.
Re:The Twitter Files, Part Six on Friday December 16, 2022 @06:31PM (#34022121)
Twitter staff taking action against users at the direction of the FBI does seem like a topic worthy of discussion, though it seems like there are a lot of people here who would rather just pretend it never happened.
Because, it's ok when journalists get banned who write about things they don't like. It's not ok when journalists get banned who write about things they do like. If you're expecting some kind of moral consistency I think you'll be disappointed.
Re:Twitter bans accounts of CNN, NYT, WaPo journalists on Thursday December 15, 2022 @09:51PM (#34009167)
I wonder if the same people who are angry about this were angry when the NY Post got their account banned.
Probably the same rules the NY Post broke when they got banned, "don't post things on Twitter that make the people in charge upset".
Re:The New Obesity Breakthrough Drugs – By Eric Topol on Sunday December 11, 2022 @02:00PM (#33946239)
I'm pretty sure most of the people here have access to ChatGPT and can pretty easily get it's explanation of obesity of desired. I don't see how this comment is useful or adds to the conversation, why are you doing this?

I guess Amazon executives have been playing a lot of Death Stranding lately.
Re:Premium .dev domain with Google costs $850 on Friday December 09, 2022 @08:23PM (#33928772)
GoDaddy never did this to me, I used to own a single keyword domain name which would definitely be considered "premium" and never paid more than ~$10 in renewal fees per year. GoDaddy has plenty of problems, but they never shook me down on domain renewals. I wouldn't expect it from Google, but I guess I'm just naive.
Re:Premium .dev domain with Google costs $850 on Friday December 09, 2022 @08:08PM (#33928657)
This is pretty disgusting on Google's part if true. It sounds like they're only letting people rent domains then acting like a landlord who increases rent to match "market rates" when you renew the lease. Hopefully this is some sort of error, but somehow I doubt it.
Re:Has your Google search results page changed? on Friday December 09, 2022 @04:07PM (#33926466)
Maybe you're being A/B tested? I just did the same search in my browser and got quite a few more results that what you're seeing. Have you tried a different browser?

Looks like the Twitter account is now private so we can't see the Tweets. Any chance you have a screenshot?
Here's the KGB defector's interview you're talking about, his name was Yuri Bezmenov.
