Re:Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:22AM (#49889425)
“We can’t have a successful AI industry if the world doesn’t think it’s built or confident that it’s built and deployed safely,” Huang told CNBC on Monday.

So he is going to sell chips which provides the perception of safety. And become the AI gatekeeper while he's at it.

Re:John Wheeler Saw the Tear in Reality on Thursday October 03, 2024 @06:37AM (#41729290)
And if I drink alcohol then my world also becomes kind of blurry.. then reality also becomes less defined? It sure feels that way. But not to my friend sitting next to me who chose not to drink. We live in separate realities at least as far as our individual experiences are concerned.

By using an android tablet they leverage the existing OS/UI/Java ecosystem to write a (fairly simple) app. Recreating that from scratch would require a lot more development.
Another +1 for the smartwatch.

Before: Every time a message arrives the phone makes that noise, and a little lamp is lit in my brain which stays lit until I pick up and unlock the phone and look at the message, answer, etc.

After: The phone is in silent mode all the time. When a message arrives I get a little tickle on my wrist - I just glance down and see who it's from and the lamp in my brain has nothing to do anymore. I even sometimes forget to pull out the phone and answer the message later.

It's easier to leave the phone out of reach, I feel less need to have it on me. It's great having a phone which never makes a sound. If a call comes in I see it on the watch and can reject the call from my wrist and optionally send an SMS instead. And podcasts are not interrupted by annoying pings.

It's a Garmin, so only have to charge it once every 10 days or so, and there's not much to do on it.

Re:Ask HN: What work/office purchase transformed your life? on Thursday November 16, 2023 @04:45AM (#38287517)
Changing desk height to standing height and buying a saddle stool.

I used to bike to work but as soon as I sat down at my desk I felt like I was cutting my body at the waist. My lower body/legs were some kind of passive appendage stuck to my chair.

The first week of working while standing I kept looking for a chair to sit on, it was really distracting and I felt tired.

I bought a saddle stool with enough height so that I can transfer back and forth between standing and sitting. The stool has no back support and my legs are still fairly straight (like sitting on a bar stool) so my body is still much more active than just sitting in a chair.

Definitely life-changing. I have suffered from lower back pain all my life. If I have to go back to sitting in a chair for more than a few days I feel my back starting to lock up. In the standing/saddle configuration this doesn't happen.

Here is a random example: https://shop.lfhair.com.au/product/saddle-stool-ch-841/

Re:Never Use Git Submodules on Friday March 03, 2023 @10:43AM (#35011059)
git subrepo is what I chose to include a "core" library of functionality in a number of repositories. Works fairly well, the main thing is that git treats all the files in the subrepo the same as any other files, so no surprises.
Imagine the world we could live in if there were no weapons. That's the world we would have if nobody built them.

I have heard the line "If I don't build it somebody else will." from an engineer working on multi-million dollar weapons (think F-16).

I can only decide what I do with my time on this earth. Everyone makes that decision for themselves.

Somebody is still wrong on the internet
Re:Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan on Saturday September 11, 2021 @03:55PM (#28495306)
I recently saw an article about reversing fibrosis in mouse studies using an FDA-approved drug, e.g.: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/08/210823170126.h...

If I google "pulmonary fibrosis reversal" a number of things come up although they all appear to still be in the research phase. Never say never.

GitAhead works for me
All flash-based memory devices have a limited number of write/erase cycles. Internal flash memories have more sophisticated strategies to extend memory life but they all rely on having spare memory available. Try not to go past 80% usage.

From Google's experience with SSDs: High-end SLC drives are no more reliable that MLC drives.

All the code I write is unpredictable when compiled. Such is the life.

Re:Ask HN: Pls review my product: Rapid Social Response on Friday April 30, 2010 @05:06AM (#1307609)
My $0.02 <disclaimer> I don't use twitter (I have an account, but never tweet, almost never look at the people who I am following) - so maybe I am too old school to have anything interesting to say. </disclaimer>

This strikes me as severely reducing the S/N of the social networking space - if this gets popular, which I assume is your goal, then a large percentage of tweets will be generated automatically. Now permutate this machine-generated "social" information with all the tools springing up to analyze tweets and derive all kinds of useful crowd-sourced insights. It all becomes that much more diluted with less and less information actually created by a live, thinking human being. This might be the start of a trend - tools which tweet automatically based on incoming tweets, creating that feared endless loop which you cannot detect because you only control one participant. Oops, some kids are out trampling on my lawn, gotta go.

Does a hammer use stairs? You can do rollovers with Javascript - many sites do. Bit you don't have to.
You can try pisa (xhtml2pdf) here: http://www.xhtml2pdf.com/ Pretty robust. I am having some trouble with bidirectional support, but otherwise looks good - it's an all-python solution.
Finally reply to all the comments. And I would have the last word. Ha.
Re:Ask YC: Laser Eye Surgery? on Saturday August 30, 2008 @05:19PM (#291052)
I had an appointment for Lasik, but chickened out at the last minute (the idea of shooting a laser into my eyes was too much). But then I continued to abuse my eyes with cheap contacts and ended up with a corneal infection which left one eye legally blind. So, glasses are my only option now. Make your choices wisely, and go with the best. I think that contacts are not healthy for your eyes over years of use.
Re:The (humorous) dangers of Google's new deep search on Thursday April 17, 2008 @02:06PM (#166555)
In a way Google is doing QA on the whole web. This will expose all kinds of bugs sites have hidden behind their form-processing scripts. Databases will get filled up with random junk ('Google was here'), but that is also good for QA. On the other hand, a lot of that junk data will be reflected back to the web by sites which post this stuff.. not so good for the SNR of the Internet as a whole.
Re:You weren't meant to have a boss on Friday March 21, 2008 @05:26AM (#142331)
As I read this article, I realized that if you scale its message up to include not just companies, but the way modern society is structured, you will see exactly the arguments presented by Theodore Kaczynski: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Industrial_Society_and_Its_Fut.... If you read his words (ignore his actions for the moment), he is saying the same thing about society in general.
