I dug into this quite a bit for a while. A book that I found pretty good, albeit at times redundant, is "Say Goodnight To Insomnia". The author has studied sleep, specifically insomnia, for a good chunk of their life and uses CBT to conquer insomnia. The book also talks a bit about myths around sleep which I found interesting.

itd be interesting if tracking price is also included, although I can imagine that would be insanely difficult to keep track of for many reasons. I love this idea and hope it continues to grow.
Re:How to Read MySQL EXPLAINs on Friday March 31, 2023 @07:19AM (#35385323)
I'm a DBA.

I found that in general, it was OK for pretty obvious things but sometimes it missed stuff such as: running a LIKE with wild card at the start, ie: "LIKE '%Luke%'". Running that wildcard in the start tends to make the optimizer do a full scan.

Otherwise, it did okay. Just ensure you give ChatGPT the schema as well for its best suggestion.

Re:Online courses vs. colleges for software engineering on Sunday September 29, 2019 @01:25AM (#21105274)
I didn't give up, the school I was attending had completely crap computer science program. The networks class was a HTML/CSS and PHP website. The other schools in my area for computer science is better but way too competitive, as in, could only accept 100 students a year, a school of 20,000 people attending. The only way for me to get going in learning is to learn on my own based off of online courses, tutorials and projects. What I did on my own was better and more relevant compared to the school I was going. I'll show my dedication to completing a problem by the projects I've completed, certificates I've achieved and the online courses I took on my own time. If anything, that should say to a hiring manager that I took responsibility of my own career and went above and beyond, that's an employee you'd want imo.
Re:Anxious tech workers are going to therapy on Friday September 20, 2019 @12:35PM (#21028545)
I'm with you, once I realized how much anxiety and self-loathing I experienced when on social media yet I was so addicted to it that I couldn't stop. I tore that band aid off, deleted all my social media accounts and I could not be happier. I did not realize how much more time I had without social media, how much more time I had to invest in myself, to achieve things I was happy with and was content without needing a numerical approval of the people in my life, the more 'in the moment and living' I was. I realized how much people thought they knew me because of my photos and posts until I was completely off social media. People become curious of what you've been up to and asked me how I was. I noticed how effective this is to build friendships and, this could be the people I surrounded myself with but people have forgot to ask how we each other how we are actually doing because we think we know based off of peoples social media. It's sad.

I've been off of social media for over a year and I don't regret it. I'm happy to miss an event because I wasn't on Facebook, it allowed me to see who actually wants me to be there versus those who just invite everyone in a group.

Re:Verified by Twilio on Friday August 30, 2019 @04:37AM (#20836818)
Maybe in the future, yes, but it's an iterative process to solve something big like robocalls. I haven't read too much about this yet but I would imagine there is some method of reporting numbers that abuse this feature.
Re:Is this Paypal experience customary? on Friday July 05, 2019 @11:38AM (#20363346)
I think the more concern is that it was withdrawn without notice to the account holder while denying it was PP who authorized it. I don't think the post was really worried about keeping the money but more or less, what if PayPal decided randomly to deduct a ton of money with no reason and no notification to the account owner?
Re:Undervalued Engineering Skills: Writing Well on Friday May 31, 2019 @01:50PM (#20063263)
Was this rhetorical or are you actually confused as to why this skill is considered undervalued?

Re:Mandrill has been down for over 30 hours with no explanation on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @03:52PM (#19089721)
http://status.sendgrid.com/

They have a status page. What does Mandrill and MailChimp combining have anything to do with SendGrid and Twilio?

There is nothing stopping you from doing all 3 independently or combined. Give your 110% if you decide to pick one to do currently, and maybe in a few years or a couple decades, transition to another one.

I found that when I stuck trying to decide what to do, I ended up not doing anything at all. I figured, if I just pick one, that is a start. There is nothing stopping me from leaving that industry/field and going into a different one, except myself. To solve problems requires action, go do something and then you'll figure out that that was not the solution.

Re:Ask HN: How to shadow a CEO? on Friday December 21, 2018 @05:16PM (#18737194)
An idea would even be ask the CEO you're shadowing these questions. Surprised no one has said that yet.
It really depends on your definition. I can script and make programs, and do some OOP in several languages, but I wouldn't call myself a "developer". I'm more of a devops engineer with a database emphasis if anything. I know some other DBA's who have developed really cool things like Orchestrator who others might call them a developer but I don't think that is most DBA's primary focus. Albeit, this varies pretty greatly between companies.
This is more nitpicky if anything, but developers are not the only ones that get blasted and ghosted with recruiters.

I'm a DBA, but I also get recruiters always telling me how I am perfect for a Sr. full stack engineer.

Re:Academia is a cult? on Sunday November 04, 2018 @02:10AM (#18374673)
How true is the no cap part? Genuinely curious, because I can't imagine some cults where if you're at the bottom of the ladder, the cult will do everything it takes to retain you if you give the cult little money and unrelenting loyalty because the loyalty itself will take care of retaining oneself to the cult. Hence, willingness to subjugate oneself to the will of the superiors with no end. Hopefully that makes sense.
Re:Twilio to Acquire Sendgrid on Monday October 15, 2018 @11:01PM (#18226055)
Nothing. So far the details of what SendGrid will look like with the acquisition is yet to be determined, but it's pretty obvious that SendGrid will be SendGrid. If anything, you'll probably be able to integrate with SMS and voice send and receive at a discounted price.
Re:Twilio to Acquire Sendgrid on Monday October 15, 2018 @08:15PM (#18225317)
They are essentially merging

I work at SendGrid, let me know if there any questions you have regarding our products.
I work for SendGrid as an engineer. Let me know if I can answer any of your questions.
That's going to take a lot of processing power to be able to handle their amount of customers on a single domain. Even loadbalanced behind the domain to multiple servers, even running kafka, probably could bottleneck it through a single domain. Regardless, even if you did A.com, you have to redirect the customer to whatever actual link they originally wanted to go too from MailChimp's server, instead of the customers server.
Why is that a mistake to rely on SendGrid?
