Re:Azure has run out of compute. Anyone else affected? on Sunday November 27, 2022 @10:10AM (#33763401)
Just to steel man your statement: You should strive for excellence in deployment with all providers (dabble) but have your initial core setup on one cloud (YAGNI principle) until when multicloud capacity is needed (at scale)
Re:Ask HN: How to be less opinionated? on Thursday September 29, 2022 @09:29AM (#33020343)
In a non-tech context, majority of people get very emotional about held beliefs or ideas based on their stories and personal truth. A challenge to these beliefs, even indirectly, is generally perceived as an attack on the individual. Listening to opinions diametrically opposite to your own without harboring any resentment takes a lot of mental training.

Haven't VC-backed companies crushed small developers in niche markets who refused to scale? In most instances

Apparently Twitter subpoenaed Musk's friends and colleagues who were actively tweeting about the deal with what is believed to be an attempt to prove he encouraged his posse tweet negatively to force a lower price.
Re:Ask HN: Where can I go to meet interesting people? on Thursday August 04, 2022 @07:01AM (#32341412)
>"I'll be able to find a few people that are like me" - consider that you don't necessarily need or even want to find people like you.

I've started listening to 90s and early 2000s punk and screamo and all I want is people that have that same appreciation for the music. Sometimes you really want to meet like-minded people who grok the unique elements of life that you do.

There is a possibility that cloud providers will have to invest in tropical climates if this insane weather persists.
Thanks for this!
Regarding your feedback, thank you. Much appreciated.

How do I indicate willingness to take less salary when taking jobs overseas?

I am an IT Specialist/Front-end developer looking to get work abroad. The job search has been unsatisfactory so far, and I sense that employers might be looking for cheaper alternatives available locally instead of sponsoring a visa or taking on the risk of foreign workers. Despite my experience, how can I best indicate that I can take less salary, provide a higher ROI for them?I'd appreciate...

The possibility of getting a job in IT abroad :)
Re:Women Who Ran Genghis Khan’s Empire on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @10:43PM (#31662601)
Most territories back then consisted of people of similar race. An empire attempting to eliminate another could technically be seen as perpetrating genocide. Esp because the treatment of surrendering opponents could go either way.
Re:Women Who Ran Genghis Khan’s Empire on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @10:37PM (#31662577)
Often people forget that there isn't a dominant empire that existed for hundreds of years without insane brutality and cruelty against anyone considered to be an enemy. With the area Genghis Khan's Empire had under control, I don't doubt they pillaged every opposing enemy without mercy.
Re:On YouTube’s recommendation system on Saturday September 18, 2021 @01:26AM (#28573895)
I have experienced the same. I think the AI is basically told to feed more of the same content. No distinction is made between viewed, new, or related content.
Using services like Donotpay which generates credit card numbers that you can then freeze instantly might be the best solution for this. You can easily get an account when good content is recommended by friends etc then just switch off the card until you need to use the service. Cancelling is a lot of work.

They were particularly encouraging of scientific endeavors that contributed to national posterity over other nations and disregarded the rest. Intellectual pursuits in politics and really any criticism of government or social norms could get one easily disappeared.
Re:How much do we need the police? on Thursday June 04, 2020 @06:01AM (#23414650)
Honestly defunding the force doesn't solve much if the underlying issues are not dealt with. I saw a Vice Special about police training nowadays. The so-called consultant kept referencing the community as combatants and his approach for most confrontations was overpower the 'opponent' at any cost.

Nothing is going to change if the police training and punishment for violating basic freedoms is not addressed.

Covid had definitely exposed flaws in pure free market capitalism. We are modern human beings who can control Darwinism for the sake of greater good if need be.
Is there a way of legitimately detecting Stingrays? I understand this is the kind of situation where they are actively deployed despite all the social awareness.
Re:NSA Exposes Tool Used by Russian Hackers on Tuesday June 02, 2020 @10:11AM (#23391178)
Most intriguing part of the story is the new ability of governments to call each other out, the deterioration of diplomatic tone and language whereby nation states would never explicitly attack each other verbally. Since the the controversy with Iran, foes have been more like five year olds in their criticism for each other. I'm sure everyone is aware of the mutually assured destruction brought forth by conflict (no one really wants a war), but none of these leaders are willing to back down at any cost.
Re:The Great Asshole Fallacy on Tuesday May 19, 2020 @04:47PM (#23239994)
A leader can also be described as someone who pushes colleagues/subordinates within the limits of what he can do hence that fantastic MJ line ' I never asked anyone to do something I could not do myself. ' There is no such thing as being pushed at your own pace.

Makes sense because Whatsapp is a client.

This is the kind of the issue Facebook will help sort out. On the other hand, they will collect a lot of data about trending topics/searches in a bid to sell/suggest more trendy ads to advertisers.
Re:MIT moves all classes online for the rest of the semester on Wednesday March 11, 2020 @12:59AM (#22543133)
>In what way are dorms worse than personal homes for diseases anyway?

They would be liable for not taking action against the Virus. Personal homes are much safer especially because all movements and interactions are accounted for. In a dorm, that's basically guesswork at best.

I like the blind broad general statement that is devoid of all nuance & background work that has to be done for users to 'come'

Its the cornerstone ideology of most failed startups.

Not in this case. It directly relates to launching side projects without consideration for perfection which provides quick feedback.

I actually thought given the size of the position, he was part of the group manipulating transactions in order to liquidate at the top. Holding those positions long term doesn't seem smart.
