Not the person you're responding to, but I assume that the kickbacks comment was referring to cases like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids_for_cash_scandal

That's no DeLorean, it looks like an old Z28, maybe about ~1980
I'm sorry that someone close to you is dealing with that struggle, but I have two questions:

1) Do you think that your friend was at all dissuaded by current US drug policy? Of course this is impossible to know for sure, but I'm curious to hear your view.

2) Is having their door kicked through in the middle of the night by SWAT, and being sent to prison in any way advantageous to someone struggling with addiction?

It represents the "line of scrimmage", which is where the ball starts at the beginning of each play.

Static and "weak" typing are not mutually exclusive.
Re:Visual Programming Languages – Snapshots on Thursday February 20, 2014 @09:37PM (#7275118)
Great list, thanks for putting this together!

My own project (http://flowlab.io) is a visual programming language for 2d games.

"sweat equity" specifically means doing repairs to a property to increase its value, as opposed to building equity by making payments. A tech worker's income is not sweat equity.
People often claim that, but it's not a particularly credible argument. Emergency room visits account for less than 2% of total healthcare spending in the US.

Re:The Quality of Embedded Software, or the Mess Has Happened on Friday November 08, 2013 @11:45AM (#6697241)
The brake pedal actuates the master cylinder, which is connected hydraulically to the calipers. Even if stomping on the brakes triggered more throttle problems, they are still plenty strong enough to stop the wheels from turning.
Re:The Quality of Embedded Software, or the Mess Has Happened on Friday November 08, 2013 @11:08AM (#6696941)
Also not trying to blame the victim, but it seems the even more obvious/natural approach would be to use the brakes. Those are hydraulic, and plenty powerful enough to counteract any force generated by a Camry's engine.
Re:Embrace the desire to make money on Wednesday July 24, 2013 @10:37AM (#6096405)
I personally really don't care about the money (no lying, I swear).

I care, though, about the fact that money brings me time, and as such more freedom to do whatever I like.

These two statements are contradictory. The whole point of having it is that it is stored value that can provide you with the things you actually need; time, in your case.

>One could adopt some kind of event-based system in scala or clojure, but Erlang and Go are alike in being the lone runtimes where running millions and millions of very small messaging processes is AOK no problem for the runtime

Is that really the case? Scala's Akka actor library seems like it would qualify just fine: http://letitcrash.com/post/20397701710/50-million-messages-p...

I see your problem right there :)

Also, I am not aware of any stable platform for game development. Browsers and iOS have both changed a lot in the last 5 years as well.

Not coming down for or against, but one argument is that it causes less market distortion than a minimum wage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_income_tax

Ok, I concede - lets just use punch cards.

Let's not, they are entirely irrelevant.

Noone is claiming that any specific tool will make your startup succeed, or fix your bugs, or add features to your software for you - I thought we were discussing text editors.

Re:Vim users: stop using hjkl on Friday March 01, 2013 @04:36PM (#5307093)
> In the context of starting, launching, growing, evolving and maintaining a tech business

Possibly, but some people are not starting, launching, growing, or evolving anything but software - and a text editor is where 99% of that work happens.

Re:Vim users: stop using hjkl on Friday March 01, 2013 @04:30PM (#5307061)
Awesome strawman you have there, and the same non-argument could apply to any technology: "I am going to take a month to learn Ruby...". In any case, you can relax - no one is trying to take Notepad away from you.
Re:Vim users: stop using hjkl on Friday March 01, 2013 @12:27PM (#5305599)
So your point is that because you may take breaks during the day, you shouldn't bother taking the time to learn sharp, efficient tools?

There are plenty of legitimate gripes to be made about vim, but you really should consider taking the time to learn a serious programmers editor like Vim or Emacs. That would at least help you avoid looking like a fool by ranting about things you clearly don't understand.

You may even find (god forbid) that you enjoy it.

Re:Vim users: stop using hjkl on Friday March 01, 2013 @12:19PM (#5305526)
So tap-tap-tapping on the arrow keys like a chicken is a more efficient way of navigating text documents then?
Re:Making $1 million from affiliate links on "Ad-Free" blog on Monday February 18, 2013 @03:51PM (#5240555)
Probably because she added that after the articles in question were written.
As I mentioned, this was added in an edit - but even the A/C doesn't affect range as much as you might think. It is roughly ~8% in your typical ICE, which is less than rolling your windows down at highway speeds. No idea what the effect of running AC on a Tesla's range is though.

www.sae.org/events/aars/presentations/2004-hill.pdf

This is reaching a bit.

1) The nominal amount of electricity used by a heater blower motor is not going to measurably affect the range of your trip (this is most likely the same for the Tesla)

2) The heat from the engine block is waste heat from the relatively inefficient combustion process. This heat has to be actively dissipated in most driving conditions (typically even in winter). It is essentially free to pipe this heat into the cabin. Now contrast this with the Tesla's 400 electrical resistance heater, which has to directly compromise range to generate cabin heat.

This part of the quote was added after I replied
What? Using the heater does not affect range in a gas powered car.

Any feedback appreciated, feel free to tell me what you like about it, or why you think it sucks.

This is a personal project that has taken up quite a few weekends so far. I would appreciate any and all feedback.
