Re:Poll: Do you meditate? on Monday April 01, 2013 @01:05PM (#5474357)
I just wanted to say thanks for this book recommendation - "Mindfulness in Plain English". Learning and starting some basic meditation was one of my New Years Resolutions, but I didn't really know where to get started (even though I've been exposed to meditation before). I bought this book and it is a great practical guide.
This is pretty cool - Since they're running Python, can I use this for Ruby apps as well?
Re:Diamonds Are Bullshit on Wednesday March 20, 2013 @02:34PM (#5409214)
Exactly. No matter the cause of WHY diamonds seem to be valued so highly in societal worth, the fact is, well, they are.

You COULD not get your wife a diamond ring, you COULD not take her out for Valentine's day because it's a made-up holiday, you COULD not get her a Christmas present because you think it's a commercial holiday, etc. But... well good luck with that.

Ask HN: Your thoughts on Demo conference?

My startup recently got accepted to launch at the DEMO spring 2012 conference next month (I believe they pick about 60-70). We didn't get a scholarship so we would need to pay $8k to launch there. We only have seed funding so $8k is a pretty expensive proposition for us. What has HN heard about this conference? Is it worth the price tag? Any insight much appreciated, particularly if someone here...

Re:Google Plus - approx 100 million users as of 2012-02-16 on Thursday February 16, 2012 @09:19PM (#3601750)
I know my one and only post was to ask if anyone out there was even using it.

And... no one replied.

Re:Ask HN: Rate my startup, The Coupon Doc on Friday February 03, 2012 @12:04AM (#3545856)
Yup, that's correct - the discounts only apply in the US as of now, though hopefully we can expand internationally at some point.

Ask HN: Rate my startup, The Coupon Doc

We just launched today - www.thecoupondoc.comIf we did our job this should be self-explanatory, but we are a site that helps users find and retrieve discounts for their medications. Any and all feedback is much appreciated, as I'm sure there are many ways to improve the user experience. Thanks in advance HN!

Re:Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood. on Saturday January 21, 2012 @12:15AM (#3492681)
Disappointed that an RFS is just a thinly disguised rant. I love HN, YC, and PG, but this tit-for-tat attempt at retaliation is childish and unworthy of the great minds that populate this forum.
Re:Ask HN: Excel vs SQL on Friday January 13, 2012 @12:39PM (#3461491)
Thank you for your input.

In terms of database normalization, doesn't that usually require redundancy (repeated columns / records)? We have that once over two columns, but otherwise there are no repeats - each entry is unique.

Pardon my ignorance, not much experience with database software as is clearly evident haha.

Ask HN: Excel vs SQL

Hi all,We're in the process of building out our database for our website, and have currently run into an interesting dilemma: whether to use SQL or Excel to contain our data. Either database needs to be uploaded to our site, and our site revolves around a search engine that will need to look up and return results from the database. We're currently using mostly PHP on the site with AJAX for the...

Re:New York vs San Francisco in fight for tech start-ups on Monday December 12, 2011 @11:19PM (#3346261)
The one thing I didn't quite like when I heard PG speak at one of YCombinator's events in NYC was his insistence that you need to move to the Valley in order to launch a successful startup. Even at a seed-stage, there's great funds out there (TechStars Network among others) that happily invest in people all over the country.
Re:Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (December 2011) on Thursday December 01, 2011 @02:29PM (#3301071)
Atlanta, GA - The Coupon Doc Full-Time

The Coupon Doc is a startup that specializes in aggregating and displaying discounts for medications to individuals. We have recently received our first round of seed funding and gained acceptance to an incubator program.

We are seeking an individual who can take on the role of CTO in our startup. Qualified applicants should be comfortable with some of the following, and should have a willingness to learn about and supervise items they do not have expertise with: back-end web development (Python/Ruby preferred), front-end development (Photoshop, HTML/CSS), SEO, mobile app development (iOS, Android), and general technology project management.

Applicants with significant past project portfolios highly preferred. Compensation will reflect experience of applicant.

Please e-mail interest to keecham [at] thecoupondoc.com

Just e-mailed, thanks for the advice.
Done, thanks.
Excellent - I had seen this threads around, didn't realize there was a methodology to them (1st of every month). I will definitely be posting on the 1st, thanks for the suggestion.
We both have a very strong business background, and I actually launched a small socially minded enterprise internationally last year; also, we were able to prove that we can get stuff done as we had a prototype available by the time of our interview for the program.

Also, the incubator we are accepted into is industry-specific and not a general "tech" incubator like YCombinator (not that one is better than the other, YCombinator is awesome obviously, just that this was a better fit for us). Feel free to ask for more details if you'd like.

Ask HN: My startup just received seed funding, tips on building out tech team?

Hi all,My startup just got accepted into an incubator program (can't tell you guys which one yet), and along with that received a decent chunk of seed funding. Myself and my co-founder are not "tech" people, though I've been actively trying to learn (proud to say I'm almost done with Shaw's LPTHW :)).One of our challenges now is to recruit someone with strong tech capabilities full-time. We've...

Re:We now have an effective vaccine for Malaria on Tuesday October 18, 2011 @11:21PM (#3128468)
As someone who worked in the development world for a year, I can honestly say that if this vaccine pans out, it would be the biggest development in recent history and would change the livelihoods of so many individuals and families.

If this doesn't deserve a Nobel I'm not sure what does. Bravo Joe Cohen.

Re:Ask HN: Where can I go to learn basic coding? on Wednesday September 21, 2011 @04:38PM (#3023585)
Thanks for the suggestions Ed, I'll be looking into all of this tonight.
Re:Ask HN: Where can I go to learn basic coding? on Wednesday September 21, 2011 @04:38PM (#3023583)
Great suggestions, thanks! I'd love to keep touch as we both start the coding journey, could be a good way to keep us both on top of progress!

Ask HN: Where can I go to learn basic coding?

As a co-founder of a startup, I am on the "business" end of things. But I want to start learning how to actually do the tech side as well - obviously, not an easy proposition, but I'd at least like to start learning so that I can be intelligent about what my tech guys are doing. So I know this is a very broad question, but a Google search on this has proven fruitless. If you were starting on Day...

Re:Bootstrapping / startup-life-hacks we’ve learned (so far) on Wednesday September 21, 2011 @12:43AM (#3020815)
Sure - check out http://strongboxwest.com/

Highly recommend it - very affordable, and plenty of space to work with.

Re:Bootstrapping / startup-life-hacks we’ve learned (so far) on Saturday September 17, 2011 @04:17PM (#3008846)
A solid alternative to working from an apartment is to find coworking spaces in your city. In Atlanta, myself and my cofounder work out of a place that has plenty of space, tables, printers, etc. and only costs $80/month/person. Also a great networking tool, as you meet other bootstrapping entrepreneurs!

Additionally, if your city has an entrepeneurship society or network of any kind, go for the food if nothing else - aside from meeting other entrepreneurship-minded people, nothing better than a free meal.
