Technically, Catalonia is still a part of Spain, but I appreciate you recognizing their sovereignty!
This is referring to StackOverflow's Talent product, which is a software engineering focused hiring platform. Seems like they furloughed the sales and marketing team for this product, due to an expected slowdown in market-wide hiring.
Re:Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @07:37PM (#21758375)
This is due to how cryptocurrencies are classified by the IRS. Currently, they are classed as assets (property) as opposed to currencies, and thus any "realized gains" are taxable events. This includes the above example, where you may have technically "realized a gain" while buying a grilled cheese with Bitcoin.

Re:The Bleak Reality of the Instagram Experience on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @07:02AM (#19084534)
I've found that Instagram use is growing amongst nearly all of my friend groups (including HN demo and non), while use of all other social apps is fading (not counting WhatsApp). For reference, mostly age 24-32 in the US and Western Europe.

Same! Python requests is one of my favorite libraries of all time. Kenneth Reitz is a treasure.
Re:Pop up pour over in front of YC office on Thursday April 20, 2017 @04:19PM (#14160442)
Fantastic idea. Pour overs are the fastest decent brewing method, and usually the cheapest. Making it portable is really cool little innovation. If the coffee is good, I could see this really selling
Re:Walmart Canada stops accepting Visa cards on Sunday June 12, 2016 @09:24AM (#11887985)
In Portugal, very few places accept credit cards, or even debit cards in many cases. This is mainly so the businesses can avoid the crazy fees. It's inconvenient, but the prices are probably slightly cheaper, so people don't really complain.
Re:Why I Quit My Job to Travel the World on Monday June 06, 2016 @01:39PM (#11848612)
Nailed it. Traveling is amazing, but it certainly loses its luster after a while. I must say we're extremely fortunate to have been able to even make it to this point though.
Re:Who's downloading pirated papers? Everyone on Friday April 29, 2016 @12:49AM (#11593822)
What exactly is the benefit of Elsevier for researchers? Is there no free way to publish papers?
Re:React Native for OS X on Wednesday March 30, 2016 @03:02AM (#11387445)
React Native doesn't deliver a poor user experience though. It's not the right choice for every project, but in most cases users won't be able to discern between RN and native.
I've lived in both Chile and Vietnam, and Chile is light years ahead of Vietnam in every respect. I love Vietnam, but it has a long way to go before it reaches the standard of living of most South American nations
Re:Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer? on Monday February 01, 2016 @08:52AM (#11011695)
That's basically the point of most law and financial firms (at least when they start out). Until it went public (and still to a large degree), the whole point of Goldman Sachs was to make its' employees rich.
Re:Rent Your Place on Airbnb? The Landlord Wants a Cut on Wednesday December 16, 2015 @11:40AM (#10745381)
OP makes it clear he would work together with the landlord on this.
Re:They Are Us on Friday November 20, 2015 @01:16PM (#10602793)
This article makes a great point regarding ISIS aim to turn western nations against the refugees. I can't even fathom how it feels to be forced from your home, then be greeted with hostility just about everywhere. It's not hard to imagine developing the sense of hatred that leads to irrational decisions (like joining ISIS), especially in the younger refugees.

I have no idea what the solution is, but I think it's clear banning refugees isn't it. I understand the fear, and I'm as scared as anyone about the potential for new attacks. Still, we need to unite everyone against ISIS, not drive new recruits towards them.

I know amazing engineers without CS degrees, and bad engineers with them. It's certainly nice to have one, but it's hardly a prerequisite for becoming a good engineer.
Eventually, creditors might write it off, but the borrower would be liable if they ever return to the US.

Also, given how annoying it is for international banks to work with US expats, I can't imagine they would look past that kind of dent in credit history.

Re:Tsunami alert as Chile hit by powerful earthquake on Wednesday September 16, 2015 @08:15PM (#10230834)
Currently in Santiago, building shook for well over a minute. No damage here though
