Re:Walking the World: Seoul on Monday June 06, 2022 @06:51PM (#31647462)
I wonder whether the threat of attack from North Korea is felt in daily life in Seoul.
What are your favorite vehicles?
That is the whole point of DST, although many people seem not to realize it. It allows us to wake up around sunrise all year long, which is our bodies' natural tendency.

Another thing nobody seems to realize is that we've already tried this experiment once before, and it was an utter failure. Quoting Wikipedia:

Permanent DST in the US was briefly enacted by President Nixon in 1974, in response to the 1973 oil crisis. The proposal was initially supported by an estimated 79% of the public; that support dropped to 42% after its first winter, owing to the harshness of dark winter mornings that permanent DST creates. An estimated six school children were also killed by motorists due to the new law. The new permanent DST law was retracted within the year.

Pricewatch still exists!
I worked for Bill for about a year at GV. He was one of the friendliest managers I've ever met at Google.

I randomly met Dave Drummond once at a coffee shop in Sausalito (I didn't know who he was at the time... he just commented on my Google shirt), and he gave me an inexplicably uncomfortable feeling.

I live in Los Angeles, and I can schedule as many free bulky item pickups as I want, at any time.

Even in that case, it may make sense to diversify. The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.

What sort of infrastructure is China building in Xinjiang?
This comment nicely explains the concept of the "veil of money": viewing economic activity in terms of real products and services instead of money can clarify what's actually happening in the economy.
Re:Let's build houses for people, not cars on Tuesday August 27, 2019 @12:19PM (#20811346)
Compare that to a rail system that's actually useful: 472 stations, 36 lines, 850 miles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Subway

Counterpoint: I think most people would gladly pay a bit more to not have to deal with the annoyance of only being able to use strangers' cars, of variable cleanliness, only after waiting several minutes for them to show up, and not being able to store anything in them during multi-stop trips.

When you have to generate your own kinetic energy, that's not due to a lack of patience as much as trying to minimize the amount of exertion you must do.
That's how I've set mine up, but even that mode is significantly worse than having physical keys, due to the lack of tactile feedback. I still accidentally touch the software keys without intending to several times per day, and I can't press them without looking at them to confirm that I'm touching the correct one.

Re:Why Isn't Debugging Treated as a First-Class Activity? on Wednesday July 11, 2018 @12:11PM (#17508014)
To nitpick your nitpick, the word "extraordinarily" here is not an adjective modifying "activity"; is an adverb that stresses that debugging is uncommonly "first-class, up-front, and frequent" in Common Lisp compared to other languages.

Colloquially, "random" does imply a uniform distribution.
Re:Renting is Throwing Money Away, Right? (2015) on Tuesday April 24, 2018 @10:51AM (#16913029)
Leverage only matters if your home appreciates (or depreciates!) in value relative to inflation. There is a very large section of the article devoted to explaining that on average, this does not happen.

The owner is harmed, because otherwise they could have gotten a new tenant and raised the rent back up to market rate.

Oh, like in Twenty20 cricket?

Have you considered that it might be intentional?
It is different, because they are testing untested algorithms that have unknown risks and failure modes.
Do you think the actual intent is closer the stated intent, or to the actual results?

We're talking about seasoned politicians, not naive dreamers.
