News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

A few aspects of this article are strange or not well expressed.

Why does it matter if Cathedral follows some bug bounty rules? Black hats don't follow rules.

And IMO the citation about acting irresponsible when a company "relies on conventional business software" is taken out of context and is about AI safety, not a vulnerability in Slack.

It has been shown that you can keep determinism (Bohm etc), but what follows is not necessary something you'll find more intuitive or cleaner or more logical.

See the article where this is already stated :)
Re:Is this the new cyber normal? on Friday October 23, 2026 @11:40AM (#50210857)
The idea is that there is still an advantage even in times of LLM and the delay helps with an orchestrated fix. (E.g. not only php needed the fix, but also several docker image etc.)

But I agree it is doubtful that there is still such an advantage...

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. This sounds reasonable to me too. However, it might be just the start :)
Oh, ok, thanks for the information. But if it is a one-time, device-level wait, not per source and not per app, then I'm unsure how this should prevent scammers in the long term?

I'm pretty convinced it is just Google testing boiling the water steady and slowly :)

I'm okay with paying but I really hate ads with a passion and especially for kids this is not okay. I was a customer of Disney and I guess I'll never be one again.

What alternatives exists for kids? Youtube?

> Personally, I think the 24h cooldown is an excellent compromise to allow user freedom while slowing down attackers sufficiently to mitigate the harm.

The best solution would have been to be able to mark ANY alternative app store like fdroid as trusted and no such cooldown period would hit every time people install an app from there. This avoids that people can immediately use installed apps downloaded from an arbitrary URL but at the same time keeps the alternative app stores as a good alternative. Google decided to play unfair again.

> but simple enough to barely be an inconvenience for anyone who cares enough and can go through it.

Any sources for this claim? I don't buy it.

Great project. Also nice that they are using photon for their address search.

I might be pendantic here (for reasons you find in my profile), but this isnt a "half hour walk" and it is just a 3 km radius around the location, i.e. as the crow flies and rivers or walls are ignored. A real half hour walk would be an isochrone for a walking profile ;)

I agree about what you mean with the dunning kruger effect. A similar effect is when I work with AI in a field where I don't know as much, and I would think that the AI works much better there or even has more than expert knowledge. So I do not (necessarily) overestimate myself, but the AI's capabilities, which can be as dangerous for society.

(Note that latest research shows that the dunning kruger effect might only be a statistical artefact.)

Isnt K-9 Mail supposed to join forces with Thunderbird? K-9 Mail works fine for me.

I wonder if they use Gemini how can the promise "Private for all" be fulfilled? Local model like gemma4?

I thought the same. However, you are also supporting their open source development and so I didn't cancel my subscription :)
Re:Fuck Android Developer Verification Program on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:27PM (#49926003)
So we need an app that remembers us of apps installed yesterday? Funny times ahead.
Re:Fuck Android Developer Verification Program on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:21PM (#49925946)
Why 12 persons? They want you to feel like Jesus.
Now it gets more obvious that when AI companies mean "AI is very dangerous" they must mean something else.

What is it though? Downregulation of bad open/Chinese competition?

Re:Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:19AM (#49724342)
I don't think it is comparable. Nowhere in the news they say it is offline but IMO Gemini Nano is offline (?)

I'm not a Google fan but I never understood the outrage as it is a local model ... sure, you have to trust them, but if you use their browser you already do.

For some reason, I’m picturing a Western right now, and climate change is a herd of wild horses coming after us. And with AI that's like robots that spur the wild horses even faster towards us...
Somehow Hetzner saw at least part of it coming in 2018

https://www.hetzner.com/pressroom/five-years-helsinki/

These low prices are cost savings that we pass directly onto our customers; they come from the reduced energy prices that we pay in Finland compared to Germany, and also come from the colder climate and lower cooling requirements

If 4.2 (or 4.1) is really the annual coefficient of performance (turn 1kWh electric energy into 4.2kWh heat energy) then this is a very good value.

Because heating water requires higher temperature differences (usually heat pumps get more inefficient then). And with an "ordinary" (propane) heat pump you get such high numbers only in summer time (>=20°C) and for water temperatures of max 50°C.

Re:Konrad Zuse Museum shutting down due to lack of funding on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @03:27AM (#49519075)
From the point of view of PL it is now perfect. Directly connected by Eurocity train but only since a year or so.

> the museum didn't really do much to let itself known either

Sure. But you can only do so much with probably not even a handful people and limited budget...

Re:Konrad Zuse Museum shutting down due to lack of funding on Monday August 31, 2026 @06:32PM (#49515663)
I think Hoyerswerda was chosen for a reason: funding money should not always go to the big city and so they thought why not built it where Konrad Zuse went to school? It kind of makes sense...
Re:Konrad Zuse Museum shutting down due to lack of funding on Monday August 31, 2026 @06:24PM (#49515600)
It is still a shame that the city which called itself Zuse-City does not try harder to keep it. I know how hard their financing situation is first hand but the ZCOM as a place and education institute was more worth then they understood.
