Re:Whatruns: Identify technologies used on any website on Saturday August 26, 2017 @03:27AM (#15104472)
I like the idea, but i have one big problem with Whatsrun:

it is capturing my browsing behaviour because it sends any URL i browse in the background to the whatsrun.com server, even when i don't want to know what software the page is running (means clicking the icon), so Whatruns get's a full browsing history from me (and you even set a UUID cookie to track unique users!).

This is a huge privacy issue! Imagine Whatruns is starting to sell this data!

To replicate simply open the dev-console for the extension and click the network tab.

Re:Why we moved away from AWS on Monday September 23, 2013 @10:36AM (#6431218)
Yes, thats exactly the trick! With our previous startup we spent around $60K/year for AWS :)

There are more provider like http://www.redstation.com/ but we have only experience with Hetzner & OVH, so i cannot say something about the other ones.
Re:Why we moved away from AWS on Monday September 23, 2013 @10:21AM (#6431106)
As i said in the blogpost, we still love AWS, its awesome, we used it for many other projects and S3 is great in combination with EC2, but in some cases it makes sense to think about it, maybe it saves you something!

As i said, we really miss the simplicity of AWS, one mouse click and you have a loadbalancer, ec.

PS: trust me, AWS EBS volume can die, and this is a pain! :)

Ask HN: Best way to anonymize connection from a browser extension?

At Blippex (https://www.blippex.org ) we use browser extensions to collect the URLs and time spent on pages to feed our crawler for the search engine. We don't want to know who sent this data, it should be as much anonymized as possible (we don't want to know the IP address, the browser, nothing, just the URL and the time spent), but what is the best solution for doing this?I don't think it is...

Re:Full MongoDB database dump of the Blippex search engine on Tuesday July 23, 2013 @11:23AM (#6090560)
Hi,

yes, as it is said in the blogpost, the only thing missing is the full text of the page for indexing & searching in it, we don't dare to release it because of copyright issues (he, you distribute the full text of my page!).

With this data you could for example built a new alexa and find out what was the most visited page last week :)

Maybe, we don't kmow yet, need more data :) we also weight the number of visits in the dwell factor, but maybe we have to adapt this in the future.

PS: i hope the it's problem is now solved :)
Re:A search engine built by the crowd on Thursday July 11, 2013 @11:59AM (#6026871)

Re:A search engine built by the crowd on Thursday July 11, 2013 @11:58AM (#6026864)
Well, it uses jsonp to get the results, maybe the plugin you are using (can you tell me then name so we can check it?) has a problem with it.
Re:A search engine built by the crowd on Thursday July 11, 2013 @11:54AM (#6026831)
Strange, should work in under one second, but you need to have javascript enabled, the site is made in AngularJS (so no hidden things there too)
Re:A search engine built by the crowd on Thursday July 11, 2013 @11:53AM (#6026824)
Well, if anyone is able for example to implement a TOR client in javascript we would love to add it to the plugin, and the sourcecode of the plugins and Android app is on github, so no cheating there.
Re:A search engine built by the crowd on Thursday July 11, 2013 @11:51AM (#6026816)
We have a lot of plans for this, but first we have to test how the searchresults are developing and of course we will adapt the ranking if we need too. Everyone is invited to help us in solving this!
Re:A search engine built by the crowd on Thursday July 11, 2013 @11:50AM (#6026800)
Blippex don't use any cookies, neither the API nor the website. We don't store any data from the people accessing Blippex.

Thank you for the find, we will fix it!
