Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:54PM (#50342709)
I've used astra to make three games which I enjoy playing myself, ina single week. Astra plus Unity (and possibly meshi, blender and others) is pure magic.

Especially when coming from a long career in CS, seeing such quick and positive results blows my mind.

I'm still learning but this is fun as fuck.

It's great just a bit toooo hard.

But it's for trekkies so I'm not going to judge, I like Star Trek but I can't say that I'm anywhere as close to being a hardcore trekky, I'm still learning and getting into it.

I'm happy to see work like this and I'm also curious as to how you got all the screenshot content. Was that through scraping or ffmpeg going through video content or what? I'm deeply curious.

Additionally, I think there (might) be a decent vibe-coded game about the game Oblivion and the intro sequence where Patrick Stewart plays the Emperor Uriel.

His presence in Oblivion was far too short.

We can perhaps honour him by extending the initial sequences of the game, with a game. Idea, methinks.

Edit: Trekkies->trekky

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:19AM (#50305154)
I've answered 3,509 questions. Accumulated 334,126 points in reputation at the time of writing. I rank #164 globally . I can safely say I owe my career to this platform. And it sucks big time to see what's happening here.

RIP stack overflow.

Re:Image generation has come a long way since August 2022 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:54PM (#50284377)
Thanks for the insight, I honestly think 11gb VRAM is more than enough for image generation. The rest lies in just using a good model and having a basic understanding of the parameters and how to prompt.

What surprised me was that I basically "solved" image generation locally when it became a thing and then lost interest immediately after.

Commercial models/systems are stupid if you ask me. There is just no need for them anymore unless one needs ludicrous scale and has a fat wallet. And can tolerate all the shit that comes with nsfw bias.

Re:Image generation has come a long way since August 2022 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:06PM (#50282715)
Oh my gosh. Makes me want to wake up my comfyUI setup on a RTX 2080 egpu which still works like a charm today even. I think the last time I touched it was about two years ago!

I always found the commercial stuff to be complete rubbish. I was astounded by how I could just spend a couple of hours using open models and open source software to produce better results.

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:10PM (#50278303)
Touch screen on a laptop is objectively disgusting. I have a Lenovo yoga X1 or something with a touch screen (and it folds backwards into a tablet) hence the name. It is stupid and useless. I can imagine Steve Jobs turning in his grave right now.

If you want a screen to touch get a fucking tablet.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:11AM (#50259675)
Exactly the same story here. I'm still very happily using an M2, which is just great.
Re:Show HN: Encarta 95 Web on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:58AM (#50222536)
Oh God I remember running this on my dad's computer which had the first CD-ROM drive I had seen. I felt like I was in a spaceship
I also worry that the AI summaries might miss out on some of or a lot of the "wink wink nudge nudge" parts of their interactions.
Techdirt changed my life and a fun fact for those not in the know, is that the Streisand effect was coined by Mike Masnick[0]:

Re:SimCity, but with Permits on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:22PM (#50174512)
I loved SimCity 2000. But the game became nonsense (for me at least) when it came down to the pipes under the city. That stuff never made any sense to me and so I moved on to other stuff. Maybe I was just not doing good? Who knows such things.
Re:Starcraft: Ashfall on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:10AM (#50151411)
The satisfying pop of the zerglings alone make it fun for me.
Re:Starcraft: Ashfall on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:00AM (#50151330)
Cool game, but isn't this going to make blizzard bring out the big guns?
Re:Nine-Inch Snails on Saturday October 17, 2026 @11:44AM (#50132090)
I just searched that and it looks great! Will check it out, thank you.

Hahaha I knew someone would drop this pun.

My personal favourite parasite is the human botfly:

This bastard is a fascinating one. I mean there are others, but this one is close to my heart.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @09:31PM (#50126961)
About 700,000 people died because of Elon's DOGE cuts. I don't give a crap about his flying cars or promises of Utopia.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @09:04PM (#50126792)
I think this is just a matter of him wanting to heat up his sycophants and cultists, and he knows he can, and that's why he bought X.

I'm not denying that there's some cool tech going on in there but this approach just makes me cringe. He knows well what he is doing and that's why I used the term "meme stock". This shit will not make any revenue, ever, probably but the demo moves the stocks.

Does Tesla have value? Yes it does. The cars work. I've never driven one but everyone I've spoken to few people who have, all of which really enjoyed driving them.

Flying cars will not ever be a thing. At least for not the next 50-100 years. Goddammit this shit is so stupid.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @08:18PM (#50126500)
It's not a flying car. It's a meme stock marketing stunt. I mean, it looks cool and I enjoyed the video but this stuff is not happening and will not be available, ever, probably.
Re:Zero-Click Spyware Delivered via Targeted Ads: AdFection on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:32PM (#50111820)
Taboola ads is zero click garbage which makes ones eyes bleed. This stuff is just a tad more sinister or a step further than that but along the same lines, more or less.
Re:Zero-Click Spyware Delivered via Targeted Ads: AdFection on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:15PM (#50111688)
Nice attempted distraction from "This Is Israeli evil shit".
Y'all will be shocked at how much of the VPN space is owned/controlled by Israel.

Your comment makes no sense whatsoever. Moreover your account was created minutes ago. What time does your shift end?
Whenever I think of Israeli ad tech one company always springs to mind, which creates some of the worst garbage on the whole Internet.

This crap is the worst of the worst.

Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:34PM (#50096446)
Been through this with my girlfriend who was diagnosed with TNBC in 2015. The second opinion amounted to "guys your doctor is a rock star, there's nothing here that's amiss and you are on a good path". She was cured and remains cancer-free to this day. This doctor had the confidence to say that he would cure it, and as you can imagine myself and my girlfriend were cynical but that's what actually happened. Was round about the time David Bowie died.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @03:52PM (#50077654)
I see this as a very niche thing which will be discontinued by next year.

Maybe it has some value but seriously, home automation is solved already. Pretty interfaces are solved. This is just a more constrained and more expensive version of what already exists, that neat little rig we can hack up from the Drawer Of Shame which we all have. Maybe it's just an experiment but to me it looks like e-waste.

Re:Scientists wonder: Is my AI stealing my ideas? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:23PM (#50076257)
Also your dignity and sense of purpose, I would add. I think the consequences of these shenanigans are going to be way more wide reaching than what we can currently comprehend. I pray for us all.

For e-paper and e-ink enthusiasts I would highly recommend my friend Larry's GitHub:

He has some crazy optimization work going on.
