The commercial reality I’m sure they’re dealing with is that the percentage of users who care enough to deal with everything required for local inference is nowhere close to large enough to make it into an initial launch.

Second this. FreeTaxUSA is great. Better interface, lower cost (truly free for federal, no catch). And coding harnesses are very good at handling taxes as well as a cross-check.

For the sake of RAM prices I wish you were correct, but I doubt it. Amazon is more likely just making some cash in a very rational way.

Making one small corner of the world a little bit better is a good thing. There's not much use in complaining that it's not as big of an impact as could hypothetically be achieved on some larger issues.

I resonate with every example given - setting jumpers by hand, sound card interrupts, autoexec.bat. I'm also a happy user of LLMs and agents. This article captured for me what is lost - which, as others point out, has long since been lost, if ever had, in other fields (e.g. modern cars vs. the Model T). I wouldn't go back, but I can still have a sense of loss.
Beautiful writing.
