The sentiment in this article is nice. But open source software is a weak analogy for frontier models. Principally because software requires zero capital investment (actually zero) while frontier models demand billions. Open models can only survive in the long run if they can (eventually) generate significant cash flows or if they are paid for by governments. Now China essentially has a monopoly on open weight models. And so supporting open source models means either supporting long term economic capture by China or supporting Chinese government control of your intelligence. Both of these outcomes are unequivocally bad from an American perspective. If you live in the valley and benefit from the US venture ecosystem you should be highly skeptical of open weight models. Banning them may very well be the best course of action.

I’ve been without service all day. Their outage map does not indicate any issues. In the age of AI coding there is no excuse for such incompetence.

Ask HN: How do I leave Dropbox

I’m worried about dropbox looking at my files and sharing them with third parties without my consent. Not tying to debate whether they did anything wrong. The point is I am concerned and want to break up with them. I am looking for guidance on how to leave their platform. Information that would be helpful includes:1. Recommended alternatives (ideally e2e encrypted)2. How to move my data3....

Hi Mark

Ask HN: Are there examples of animals that beat their children?

I read this morning that “a sizable chunk of humanities children were beaten by their parents” in the 18th century. Sure. Seems believable at first. But also grotesque. And I can’t think of a single example of animals beating their children. Am I wrong in concluding that humans are unique in this regard ? What does it say about us ?

Re:Why America can’t build quickly anymore on Saturday March 19, 2022 @10:41PM (#30739548)
Robert Moses made a career out of building fast in a time and place where public works were extremely inefficient due to corruption. He rose to power at a time when jobs were handed out as currency to collect votes. Robert Caro describes in great detail scenes where, for example, hundreds of city workers who were supposed to be working would instead camp out in parks passing around prostitutes and brown paper bags. The city was a wasteland of corruption and incompetence. Moses turned this around in a matter of years to build massive public works projects quickly and at a high level of quality.

I guess my point is that things were very bad in New York before the 1920s. And one man found a way to turn that around. So we shouldn’t act as if the status quo is our destiny. That we are somehow witnessing something that is new in this country. Things can change. We can change them. It happened before.

Spark is not dead. Not even close.
No. There is no alexa feature in the app as far as I can tell.

Ask HN: Why does my audio flicker off when closing the Amazon app on iPhone?

Suppose I’m using my iPhone to listen to a podcast on Spotify and shop for a new book on Amazon at the same time. When I close the Amazon app my audio will abruptly turn off for a second or two and then resume. Have others experienced this same issue? If so, is Amazon doing this intentionally to get information about my paired devices or the other apps I’m using ?

Please explain why you would compare me to a blogger on the far right. I am not politically affiliated just a curious person who is reading about history. If you have a different view, why is it different ? What am I missing ? I am open to the possibility that I am wrong
But the fall of colonialism did not lead to freedom and liberty. In fact the average person living within colonial territories experienced a marked decline in freedom and liberty at the end of colonial rule. There are exceptions such as Singapore. But typically corrupt politicians with little regard for the welfare of their people came into power. In many cases these politicians were overthrown in turn by even worse military rulers. Examples include Algeria, Congo, Egypt, Madagascar, Indonesia, and many others.

Ask HN: Is six sigma still considered a best practice?

Is six sigma still considered a best practice ? If so why doesn’t six sigma get more attention in the software community ?“Consider this hypothetical. You make spare parts and promise 10-day delivery. Over the course of three deliveries, your customers receive their parts on day 5, day 10, and day 15. On average 10 day delivery. Over the course of the next three deliveries they received their...
