When diving to 90ft+ you get 'stupider' (nitrogen narcosis). Our instructor had us do simple math problems on a board underwater and timed us. We were doing them very very slowly but you don't feel that it is slower. It was an interesting experience meant to warn you that you won't realize that you are affected by nitrogen narcosis.
This american's life's episode "Three Miles" (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/550/t...) won the reporter her Peabody award and is one of the most touching and haunting stories on pretty much the same topic.

enjoyed reading your comment, but if one is drawing too many similarities between their work environment and prison, it could be time to find/create a new work environment.
Re:What Lucky People Do Different on Monday April 11, 2011 @01:51PM (#2433472)
a subtle but important distinction has to be made. the experiment mentioned in the blog shows a correlation between people who claim they are lucky and the fact they found a text snippet. not people who are lucky (if that is even possible). it could very well be caused by the fact that a test subject just told people they were lucky so psychologically they behave differently. if the experiment had been setup with no 'lucky finds' the ones claiming to be lucky could all take longer because they were less focused on the counting.

to then tie the subject of steve jobs who is very successful to this finding and attributing the success to being spontaneous seems to jump quite a bit in logic that is not supported by the experiment.

Re:Fighting to Shut Out the Real India on Friday April 08, 2011 @03:25PM (#2425263)
1980: India 181 B China 188 B

2010: India 1.5 T China 5.7 T

regardless of future predictions it seems to support 'the vastly diverged since' claim. China's economy is almost 4x that of India's today where they were virtually the same size in 1980. That brings a lot of concern over democratic vs non-democratic in terms of bringing economic growth to the people.

Re:India Graduates Millions, But Too Few Are Fit to Hire on Tuesday April 05, 2011 @01:57PM (#2411972)
Just because something can happen anywhere does not mean that they happen to the same degree. India has a corruption perception index of 3.3 (out of 10) in 2010. Below even countries like China and Columbia. The effect on education is just one ramification of corruption. It is overly dismissive to make the claim that 'well corruption happens everywhere'
Re:Startup Offering a Virtual Girlfriend on Facebook on Thursday March 24, 2011 @03:03PM (#2365404)
if they can pull it off (terms of service violations and what not) this will be brilliant, it is just a viral bomb ready to go off the things that can happen. I see chat roulette like kind of infamy very quickly.
Re:But nobody wants a “fast-paced environment” on Friday March 18, 2011 @11:43AM (#2340765)
trying to predict how the company is based on the job listing is on the same order of magnitude of effectiveness as trying to predict how good the candidate is based on the resume. There's probably just some rough correlation on a large scale. I used to have a lot of notions from reading various blog posts but too often they prove to be totally wrong in specific instances. One of my worst experiences ever was going after a clever puzzle online leading to arduous days of coding and grilling and more puzzles (invested so much time) only to get a sub-par offer and lots of 'hard negotiating' which i always avoid. fact is words like fast-paced, multitasking, excellent communications, team player, rockstar, a player, self motivated blah blah blah, I simply ignore. I imagine the same goes on in the other direction, so I no longer put them on my resume.

you just need to not get involved they will figure it out eventually. I am not sure at which point my son started to use the home button properly but it definitely happened without our intervention in the last 6 months or so (he also started playing around with it at 2). I am worried that the ipad is bad for things like learning delayed gratification and attention span, as when he is watching dora he will let it finish but otherwise the smallest frustration leads to hitting home and starting over.

a great part of the fear is that you can not see radioactivity harming you. Water I can see. Mining coal feels like it is within my control whether I engage in that activity or not.

I don't think I would take the time to input things about my car. (not to say that is a general case, as I'm sure there are people who care about their cars more) But even in my case if the oil change or tune up place i went to gave me a url for my car's history and an email alert for next oil change/maintenance, it would make me more loyal to that place. even better if they shared history like on your site. I dunno, that may be an angle that would work with me in particular.
Re:Nothing is ever as risky as you think it is on Friday March 04, 2011 @06:35PM (#2290276)
there may in fact be correlation between doing those things and being successful. and it is possible that both are caused by lowered perceptions of risk. I think I read at some point that people who commit suicide but survived were more statistically successful and one possible cause was their lowered perception of risk (but can't currently find source)
Re:Pic A Fight: Instagram meets FaceMash on Friday March 04, 2011 @05:46PM (#2290150)
you are absolutely right, most hotornot sites have that kind of low barrier to entry. my problem is that people who vote but don't submit photos don't really add to the project (not an ad site like hotornot and especially if they vote poorly and are taken out, the votes have to double up for them to have meaning to prevent random voting etc), right now there are actually way more votes than needed in proportion to people who submitted their photos.

but yeah it might need some re-examining.

Hi, I've a identical project but for flickr photos: elograde.com with over 200k comparisons so far and some very quality photos. tho the flickr community has not really taken to it too much. (been up about a year now)
Re:Why Most Facebook Marketing Doesn't Work on Friday February 18, 2011 @01:00PM (#2236476)
I am curious about this as well, especially since when working on a facebook photo app we did A/B testing of the difference between asking for just the basic permission and asking for a page of permissions (publishing, photos, offline, email etc) and we saw no difference and no drop off. this was a delayed permissions grant as in people can browse the app without granting any permissions and permissions were only requested when they needed to goto the next step so to speak.

Ask HN: How do I get the word out on my data mining report

Hi HN,I did data-mining on my site and did some charting and such and BELIEVE my data to be interesting and blog worthy. I created it hoping to get it out there and drive traffic to my web app.I don't have much of a contact list or presence on the web, so was looking for advice on how to proceed beyond posting to forums and reddit and such.also i'd like to know whether the data is really blog...

thanks for the link, i hadn't run across it til now. google has a game thats similar also called matchin (http://www.gwap.com/gwap/gamesPreview/matchin) is likebetter still maintained? i wasn't able to sign up. i wanted to see if what kind of rating they give the photo.
Re:Ask HN: Review my webapp (objective ratings for photos) on Tuesday December 22, 2009 @12:44PM (#1010323)
thanks, its hard to see that as the developer. target audience are people who want to get a rating for their photograph online. my thought is that the ratings u get tend to be very subjective so there might be a need for an objective rating. the nav bar while voting is a great observation, right now one does seem kind of stuck on that page.
Re:Ask HN: Review my webapp (objective ratings for photos) on Tuesday December 22, 2009 @12:23PM (#1010275)
Hi, i created an account hnlogin / hnlogin if you do not feel like signing up.

i will think about what interactions there can be without signing up.

Ask HN: Review my webapp (objective ratings for photos)

Site: www.elograde.comHi all, long time lurker and a YC interviewee reject here looking for some help =)I believe I have come up with a way to objectively rate photos so that the rating is consistent and accurate and where different ratings have meaningful distances between them. The general idea is to rate others' so that yours will be rated, but instead of actually rating, you compare photos...

Re:Ask HN: Please review Wordey - Remembrance dictionary on Sunday December 20, 2009 @08:59PM (#1006973)
really really loved the super simple interface. got what it did instantly and love the idea also. but i am not able to update my email, i keep putting it in but it's still 'none'.

also i am personally not really trying to increase my vocabulary, can i use it to help like memorize/internalize just general ideas? for instance after reading something recently i want to memorize/internalize a few one liners. i tend to read things, really agree with it, but forget it after a while. or like if i do something stupid coding/process wise i wanna remember cuz after the pain fades sometimes i forget. do those things also work with the memorization algorithm?

first of all the game is great and very addictive and has more depth than tetris and bejeweled and what not.

problems with the page tho: 1) way too many different fonts and colors to the texts. confusing to process, i didn't know where to place my eyes for quite a while

2) descriptions and reviews are too verbose. like instead of all the reviews, all u need is like a one liner like "way better than tetris and bejeweled" that conveys what it is as opposed to like 3 paragraphs.

Re:Ask HN: Review my App - Freeciv.net on Saturday December 19, 2009 @08:44PM (#1005558)
I see ads on the side, I may be completely misreading your intentions for having them of course (as it could just be why not?) but I am not seeing freeciv on web as being very high in traffic. Main reason is that the barrier to entry is extremely high. Without tutorials, and the way the ui is setup, it requires you to be a former civ player, and a former civ player likely has civ on their computer (or at one point). So with the free advantage gone for a lot of them (eg i have civ4 installed right now), how is this better than multiplayer civ4? my hope is that u have some cool plans for it that takes it beyond the commercial civ titles.

Re:Hobbyists Use Etsy to Trade Day Job for Hard Work on Friday December 18, 2009 @12:32AM (#1002597)
unfortunately being able to live on making crafts in the US is not at all due to 'hard work', that is simply a red herring in terms of difficult things facing these producers. Instead, it is likely due to obscurity or the novelty of that market. Someone in the story is already hiring employees to do the work, it is only a matter of time when those employees, and then even the entrepreneur will be outsourced outside the country.
Re:China’s Family Planning Goes Awry on Tuesday December 08, 2009 @10:31PM (#985220)
in terms of just fertility rate problem (not the gender ratio) the difference between japan, western europe, and china is that china has more or less the option to change policy and tune the fertility number where as others do not.
