A helpful guide for designing backend systems was published on github:
https://github.com/donnemartin/system-design-primerMake sure you really learn TCP and the unix toolchain for digging into network problems e.g. tcpdump. It's always important to isolate things: is it the latest push causing things or is it network problems?

We've been using zendesk for a while but recently ran into API limits. Their search and view performance is also not optimal. What are some YC startups using for customer support? Our needs are:
1) must handle high volume of tickets
2) support for searchable metadata attached to tickets
3) API
4) fast and flexible view & search system (would love regexes)

Just installed it on ubuntu using sublime text 3 (installed from sublime-text_build-3047_amd64.deb). I get into vim mode when creating new files; however, when opening existing .py files on disk I don't get the vim editor.
I'm very interested in doing a long distance river trip in Europe. Can I ask which route you took through those countries? Was dealing with locks an issue or did you just carry your canoe past them?
Could you list a few more? I'm a big fan of this genre (ever since the King's Quest days)
How do you make money? Some sort of affiliate deal?
Nice to see that Midway Island has been street-viewed:

Would your algorithm still be profitable today, with so many people running bots on mtgox?
I'm working in Norway currently. For what reasons could your pension be denied when you become old? (Assuming you are a permanent resident by the time you want to collect).
I've found in the government jobs, the <= 40hr week is pretty much guaranteed. I agree that the waiting times are a little crazy--I had to wait 3 months to see a specialist after a recommendation from my fastlege.
no.indeed.com indexes all the major norwegian job sites. I suggest going there and just searching for "python" or "java" in the "hva" (what) field. Also, ARM has a branch in Trondheim and last I saw they were hiring software engineers.
Salaries aren't as awesome as in San Francisco. As an entry level dev you'll make around 450000-500000NOK (~80k USD). With a Master's or more experience, working in the private sector you get ~100k USD. Cost of living is significantly higher than in the states, but you get healthcare for free, and if you don't eat out every night or buy flashy cars you'll be fine financially.
pootle is also an OK option, if you don't mind doing heavy customization
I've been working on a similar strategy after having read Nejat's book:
http://www.amazon.com/Investment-Intelligence-Insider-Tradin...The plan is to derive trading signals from insider purchase data while taking into account the insider's relative risk-aversion (estimated from age, salary, sex). At this point I'm just trying to recreate Nejat's results. Data-quality seems to be an issue (stock splits aren't recorded in the yahoo data).

I haven't found a suitable replacement. It would be nice to find something that indexed github projects as well.

I recently formed an LLC for my software-dev consulting business. I'm wondering if it's strictly necessary to have a business license as well. (This is a Wyoming LLC)

Out of curiosity, what is your niche/area of expertise?
Given the extra costs of being a freelancer (health insurance, self-employment tax), if you want to be living in the same neighborhood as your full-time peers you should be charging at least 75/hr.
Is there any reason you go from quickbooks -> your accountant instead of letting Intuit handle everything (tax filing, etc.)?
I'm trying to avoid hiring an actual (expensive) human accountant if I can..
