SEEKING FREELANCER - NYC

Looking for someone to take over a Swift 3 project for a financial company. I've been working on it remote but I'm realizing the app isn't going to get done unless I replace myself with someone on-site. Remaining work is some design changes and a twilio component. Feel free to send me a resume with any other links you'd like to share.

Ask HN: Where do you look for developers?

I realize it might be foolish asking this question on a predominately technical site, but, non-technical people, where do you look for developers? I'm looking for someone to take over one of my projects and go on-site since it's not working remotely. I'd rather not cold-message nearly every member of iOS-related meetups again.

This isn't anything new. It's a well established fact that USB 3.0 interferes with 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi.

I've always found Ctrl-[ to be more intuitive instead of ESC for vim. Strangely enough I have no idea where I saw that Ctrl-[ works as an alternative and I don't see any reference to it in my vimrc so it should work out of the box. Having to move your left hand all the way over to esc is just slow and cumbersome, meanwhile [ is just right there.
HappyFunCorp is pretty good.

Very cool.

Just an FYI, the links at the top link to the current page instead of sections.

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your personal software projects? on Wednesday September 21, 2016 @12:20PM (#12549607)
I just have a folder of text files for each project. Even if it's trying out a git project, I'll record the setup process and TODO list as I go in case I need to re-setup the project from scratch at a later time. To maintain a decent SNR and keep my active projects grouped together, I'll have an archived folder and place a project in there when I'm no longer actively working on it.
Re:Ask HN: Freelance or Full-time? on Wednesday September 07, 2016 @06:39PM (#12448573)
I think the first step is to realize how much NYC digital agencies charge and how much they're taking advantage of you at $55K. The agency environment is also the most demanding in that there is always an endless queue of projects to be done and the developers are interchangeable with a hot swapping of projects being quite common in which projects are just shuffled around between developers requiring you to quickly pick things up and become familiar with the codebase in order to fix bugs handed off to you.

On the other hand, finding a next gig as freelance can be a royal pain in the ass unless you have a lot of connections, but if you do, having a queue of projects and working remotely is the ideal situation imo as long as you maintain a decent social life.

For full-time, you can just pick something either based on the size of the company or what they do.

This makes me want to buy a Dawner Prince effects pedal and I don't even play guitar anymore. Pretty effective advertising.

As a side note, the Look Closer button consistently crashes my browser (firefox 48.0.1). Anyone else having the same issue?

Re:Security blogs on Wednesday August 24, 2016 @02:11PM (#12354014)
Sure thing! Pull requests welcome!
Relatedly, I really wish Github had some sort of point system to further incentivize contributing to projects. It would also be nice to have a standardized way of marking an issue as "help wanted" rather than having to search on any of the following labels:

  help wanted
  help-wanted
  good first bug
  Help Wanted
  contribution welcome
  HelpWanted
  first time contributor
  Contributor Friendly
  Good First Task
  beginner friendly
  good first contribution
  Good for New Contributors
  pull request wanted

The SEEKING FREELANCER|WORK ratio in this monthly thread is usually pretty weak; hopefully this'll help with your search options:

The circumstances under which I discovered/reported the bug were totally coincidental too. I noticed a friend use the file command and thought to myself "Hmm I've never actually used that command before. Let me try it out." Ran it on a TODO list text file I had lying around, scratched my head over the "Erlang JAM file" output, and went from there.

I know you're just asking for sites and not approaches to finding contract work, but getting in with a very promising early stage company through contract-to-hire [that allows remote] is probably the most sustainable way to go.

Doing one contract project after another at an hourly rate just doesn't scale well financially and finding a next decent client can be like pulling teeth.
