How do you think those times became unstable?

Surely info suppression tactics have often played a role?

Try utilizing Anki for spaced repetition. Brilliant program used by many medical students.

Your "rebuttals" are a prime example of normalcy bias.

Not surprising though, pretty much everyone born in the past 60 years has become accustomed to a ridiculous "normal" that has been built on a fossil fuel house of cards.

You're right, the hedonic adaptation is all imaginary. David Foster Wallace and the many psychologists who support it's existence are all wrong.

Perhaps they should read your dissertation on it?

I had that same realization, that watching documentaries about the world could increase both my compassion and my gratitude.

I've found this channel to be helpful towards that end: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW39zufHfsuGgpLviKh297Q

DW Documentaries.

Take some time to watch his YouTube video explaining the iPhone hack.

He starts the video by giving credit to other people involved in the project.

Exactly, it's mostly busywork.
Re:Boeing-SpaceX Team Split Space Taxi Award on Wednesday September 17, 2014 @06:23PM (#8332697)
The space program has been (and will continue to be) directly responsible for many important technologies that lift the tide for ALL of humanity. Yes, even those who live in poverty.

If you are interested in learning how, read this short letter:

Re:The First Look at the New Oculus VR Prototype on Tuesday January 07, 2014 @07:53PM (#7021044)
I received DevKit V1 a few weeks ago and had the privilege to demo it to a few friends and family over the holidays.

Everyone from ages 4 to 80 absolutely loved it. Most of these people are not even gamers, and they could see the incredible potential of this device.

It is truly a novel experience. Now I'm just trying to save up some cash so that I can invest in this company when it goes public!

No wo(man) is an island.

Musk would have a hard time innovating if he had to build his own house, grow his own food, knit his own clothes, etc. etc...

We all rely on each other to provide our basic standards of living.

Without our basic needs being satisfied, we don't have a platform from which to focus on innovation.

Yes, innovation is great, but don't act like they are the entire backbone of humanity.

What about scrolling through testimonials from satisfied customers?

Have the testimonials fly by in an airplane ;)

Re:Posterous cofounders create a replacement: Posthaven on Saturday February 16, 2013 @04:00AM (#5230947)
Nice work on the new site, the design looked great!

It's nice to see you acknowledge that things were rocky with Posterous but you are now moving forwards in a new direction based on your past learnings.

After all, isn't that one of the great things about being human? We can all learn from our past mistakes and strive to better than the person we were yesterday.

Nice work. Article suggestion:

Could you delve into the applications of retargeting for email auto responder campaigns?

Re:Apple Sells Three Million iPads in Three Days on Monday November 05, 2012 @10:17AM (#4743852)
It could still be a huge success while satisfying both of the options you outlined.

It would really just depend on the extent of the cannibalization.

Re:Kim Dotcom's new Mega project on Thursday November 01, 2012 @10:34AM (#4727704)
Exactly.

It's likely that many people get away without having their "skeletons in the closet" brought into the light of day.

Re:Amazon Attacking Apple's iPad Mini on Homepage on Sunday October 28, 2012 @07:15PM (#4710317)
Whether you are an Apple fan or not, it is difficult to contest the fact that this Amazon ad is taking direct aim at an Apple product.

What would you call this, if not an "attack"?

If you are so proud of them, continue to submit them as single links to HN.
Re:Ask HN: Your best passive income sources? on Thursday October 11, 2012 @03:45AM (#4639902)
You should split test some NFL jersey e-mail submit offers from CPA networks, instead of Adsense.

I bet you will make way more money from those 1,000 daily uniques with a good jersey e-mail submit.

Re:Are Those Spidery Black Things On Mars Dangerous? on Wednesday October 03, 2012 @01:21PM (#4608515)
When planning a landing site for each rover mission, NASA considers a variety of factors and makes a best-guess as to the fruitfulness of each site from a scientific perspective.

Clearly a team of brilliant scientists has not failed to consider the possibility of exploring these strange spidery features, but they have decided against it for the time being.

It doesn't really make sense to assess their "strange priorities" as an outsider looking in with very limited knowledge as to how their decision making process actually works.

Re:Lean Domain Search Launches New Business Name Generator on Monday October 01, 2012 @01:45PM (#4598340)
You may be able to get away with that high price point if you let people try your service for free first. That way you can really prove your USP.

Most entrepreneurs start multiple businesses, so they may likely pay large sums of money for your service in the future if they were given a chance to try it once for free.

Re:Why I now, unfortunately, hate Hacker News.. on Friday August 17, 2012 @04:07PM (#4398508)
Exactly.

There is not going to be a "one-size-fits-all" solution to this problem. A multi-faceted solution including both technical and non-technical elements would likely work best.

The easiest part of the solution to implement would of course be the text in the vicinity of the comment box. This text would establish certain core tenets that we can all vote on with Paul.

The technical aspect of the solution could monitor how often certain users are being down voted. The down-vote history of an account could then be used to "weigh it down" somewhat, so that it takes more up-votes in the future to bring their comment to a higher position on the page.

Re:Giuseppe Verdi on Refunds on Wednesday January 25, 2012 @06:20PM (#3512197)
Very eloquent refund request.

A far cry from what would be commonplace in today's world. :)

Isn't he simply suggesting that we might want to address the problems, rather than the symptoms?
