> I know this is an unpopular opinion here, but I get a lot more value out of targeted social media ads than I ever did billboards or TV commercials. They actually...show me niche things that are relevant to my interests, that I didn't know about. It's much closer to the underlying real value of advertising than the Coca-Cola billboard model is.

You are describing two different advertising strategies that have differing goals. The billboard/tv commercial is a blanket type that serves to foster a default in viewers minds when they consider a particular want/need. Meanwhile, the targeted stuff tries to identify a need you might be likely to have and present something highly specific that could trigger or refine that interest.

You're not wrong. Even simple "page hit counters" became a target of manipulation once they were common. Human nature is tough at scale.
Facebook then wasn't what facebook is today. The social media of the early internet was largely a digital expansion of otherwise healthy social norms. Then the internet blew up. Now it's more akin to the drug dealers DARE warned us about. Still waiting on _those_ free drugs, tbh.

I mean that's one of the value propositions these folks have to weigh into their product offerings. At some point you either have a reputation for delivering accurate responses or not and that will dictate who uses it and how much they're willing to pay for it.

Has a LOT to do with how it's configured and what plugins are installed.
>I say all this as a parent of an almost 6 year old boy, doing everything I can to shield him from the wacky parenting style that seems to be the norm and provide him places of community and activities away from screens. He won’t have a phone until he drives, or maybe just a basic flip phone if we think we need a communication line to reach him when he’s a bit older.

This is possibly a bit extreme, imo. In a world that is ever increasingly digital, responsible exposure is without a doubt necessary; However, it seems that one could also inadvertently foster naiveté and ignorance of our digital reality, which has its own potential pitfalls. The "right" answer is probably somewhere in the middle. As usual.

As a long time gamer, I can anecdotally corroborate your theory with my early experiences playing FPS games using a dial-up connection. Average ping was about 200ms which allowed for an enjoyable and accurate experience after some adjustment. >250ms was unpleasant and had a significant impact to ability.

It was for this reason that I, and many others, for a short period, got objectively "worse" at the game when we switched to ISDN/Cable and suddenly found ourselves with 20-30ms pings; Our brains were still including the compensating latency when firing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you basically just described good logging practices, yea?

This entire thread is an epiphany for me and I can vouch your bit as something I share as well.

Sounds like a great personality type for a platform engineer..

The only real "trickle down" that actually exists, heh. Invent cool stuff, protect yourself from having it stolen, eventually give into the ridiculous sums the giants will throw at you and pivot with that to your next endeavor.
The ceremony just undoes the efficiency in most cases; That's the rub.

You are saying dumb shit.
Re:Google Search Is Dying on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @03:00PM (#30351832)
I think you missed the point here -- people synonymize googling with searching and therefore aren't choosing to google -- they're choosing to search but ending up using google despite having made no conscious effort to do so (it's just there).
Re:How to approach and prioritize technical debt on Monday January 31, 2022 @06:21PM (#30156256)
All this granular bullshit is entirely too much overhead and an unnecessary layer to "manage" imo. "Tech debt" and handling it should be part of your culture and by default included in the scope of any estimate that touches something affected by it. You negotiate out of addressing it, not into it.
Re:How to approach and prioritize technical debt on Monday January 31, 2022 @06:19PM (#30156234)
This is tech debt.

Seem being the key word. The messaging is poor, the idea has quite a bit of merit.
How daft can you be to think that scale makes no difference? You can drink water and be hydrated or you can drink too much water and die. Scale is critical in determining appropriate rules.
Sure. Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and any other celebrity do not employ the same nefariously data driven agenda on a scale that begins to come anywhere close to that of Facebook; They are not comparable in this context. Scale is a highly differentiating factor. A more genuine comparison would be to the likes of Robert Mercer, Roger Ailes, etc.
False equivalence is an easy fallacy to fall prey to -- this is not the same thing. It is similar and in the same domain, but hardly equal.
Elsewhere at their own expense? Yea that's gonna be a no from me.
> The Walton family can't throw my in prison. In fact, they can't do much of anything to me besides perhaps denying me a Sam's Club membership.

They most certainly can. They simply have no reason or motivation to.

It's the same as voting. You give everyone a vote because that is the least exploitable, fairest approach given the situation. You don't try to determine who is "most qualified to vote" because you end up with what the republicans are doing now. The likelihood that you accidentally recruit a power hungry dictator by virtue of his random selection to some position of power is much less than that individual maliciously seeking it of his/her own volition.
This might just end up doing the same thing with extra steps but for me the most effective has been holding breath until it starts to become slightly uncomfortable and then start drinking a full glass of water while allowing myself to take short breaths of air as necessary between swallows. Something about the swallowing motion combined with short breaths seems to "reset" the diaphragm like a champ for me. Breathe slow and relaxed for the minute after to ensure it's really gone :)
Re:Git undo: We can do better on Monday June 21, 2021 @01:55PM (#27581720)
push causes the error, the resolving pull creates the merge; the correct resolution has been pointed out as git pull --rebase but most people don't realize this.
Perhaps satisfaction and contentment are more accurate?

Re:GitHub, fuck your name change on Wednesday March 17, 2021 @12:18PM (#26493251)
Honestly, you're absolutely correct in encouraging an empathetic perspective but I would counter that your dismissing the very common reality of the victimhood mentality being a root cause to a lot of these types of outbursts is a bit short sighted. While the underlying reason this mentality exists is certainly, as you described, born from decades of misogyny, there is an entire population that has not necessarily experienced it to nearly the degree that warrants the level of hypersensitivity they exhibit.

I am not saying misogyny doesn't continue to exist, but it is now very often misattributed in scenarios that technically fit the criteria (man didn't hire woman, etc) but are in fact the result of other factors (woman wasn't a good hire). It's a slippery slope and the reason we have such outrage in response to equality movements in general. Kneejerk reactions to non-misogynistic interactions are counter productive and serve to undermine the validity of the complaints against misogyny by giving naysayers a reason to dismiss them.

Re:Encouraging a culture of written communication on Monday May 11, 2020 @02:53PM (#23145616)
This, to me, defines the heart of a true DevOps mindset. It's not easy to find this role defined as such, though, and you'll often find yourself fighting to carve it out of a more simplistic definition (i.e. automate stuff) at most organizations if you choose to pursue the path.
