I don't think there's such a thing. Life is hard.
+1 for Hugo.
"Vendors don't build software, people build software"

Working with vendors is logical for big projects but an obstruction for small projects. If we eliminate the middleman, outsourcers would pay less and developers would be paid more. There'd be less bureaucracy. There'd be greater loyalty.

I hope there was an easier way for outsourcers and developers to find each other.

This behaviour is present in my country too. Surely in other countries also. It is global.

Ask HN: If you were building an online school, how do you find great teachers and how do you convince them to create and offer their lessons online?
Re:Why Node.js is becoming the go-to technology on Friday March 14, 2014 @07:46AM (#7398125)
> and happiness... I don't know really, I'm inclined to believe a lot of developers use NodeJS because it's new and hot and Java isn't, instead of looking at their customers' needs.

I agree. To be happy, We don't program using a particular language. We play video games instead. We program using a language chosen by us or for us to satisfy customer's needs.

How can a BDFL retire? I thought it's For Life?
Re:404 Page Not Found on Friday December 20, 2013 @07:05PM (#6945008)
Very creative. But what's the objective? I'm sure it's not to increase page views or improve user experience.
Re:News is bad for you on Thursday December 12, 2013 @06:29PM (#6898022)
While it is wise not to believe everything we read in the news, it does not follow that there is nothing we can trust. The key may be to have a healthy skepticism, while keeping an open mind.
Re:Is work necessary? on Thursday November 28, 2013 @11:20PM (#6817886)
The Philippines did not come to mind when I read the article. What I took from the article was that the human race can invent a system that would provide for their basic needs so that humans don't have to worry about it and they can spend their time on their hobbies.

(I'm from the Philippines.)

Re:Is work necessary? on Thursday November 28, 2013 @11:10PM (#6817862)
Yes, work is necessary. Even before money was invented, our ancestors still needed to work for their basic needs. They had to harvest or hunt for food, build their houses and sew their clothing. All of that is work.
Re:Read less HN on Sunday November 17, 2013 @11:11PM (#6752473)
Yes, awareness. I was reading 2+ hours a day of HN at my previous work. I was still more productive than most of my co-workers and was able to introduce useful tools, solutions and practices. One of my fellow developers asked, "How do you find out about all these stuff?"

So yeah, how do we find out about all these stuff otherwise?

Do you agree or disagree with them? Is "well what if she is unhappy, is she still successful?" really a stupid question?
Re:How Do you Motivate Yourself and Stay Focused? on Friday October 11, 2013 @09:33AM (#6532943)
Makes sense. If you don't care about anything else but to finish what you're currently doing, you'll most probably get it done. Like if you really want to finish the film you're watching or the game you're playing or the book you're reading and you don't care about the baby crying or the phone ringing or the food burning or the burglar entering, you'll most probably get it done.
Re:Should we stop believing Malcolm Gladwell? on Thursday October 10, 2013 @09:52AM (#6527634)
> are based on what's really going on

Where can we actually get accurate information of what's really going on? News? Government? Businesses? Church? Blogs? Forums?

I can't see why seeing the invention of a language is significant in this respect. Schools are worse at keeping up their curricula with new technology (at least where I live), so if a language were invented while you're in college, I don't think that language will be taught while you're there.

I went to college in the late 90s through early 2000 and we were taught (introduced would be more accurate) Pascal, C++ and Visual Basic. When I graduated, the language in demand was PHP.

You're awesomer.:) This is really helpful. Thanks.
> The rate at which technology is changing is absolutely insane.

By the time you graduate, most of the things you learned are obsolete. My advice is to grok the fundamentals, the concepts that don't change. Then absolutely learn to use Google.

Re:The shittiest project I ever worked on on Wednesday September 25, 2013 @12:14AM (#6442586)
> These days I would handle this easily; after the first or second iteration I would explain the situation: I had based my estimate on certain expectations of how much work would be required; I had not expected to clean up dirty data in eight different formats; they had the choice of delivering clean data in the same format as before, renegotiating the fee, or finding someone else to do the project.

Great advice for dealing with issues we did not consider in our estimate.

Had he charged hourly instead of a fixed price, would this project have been less shitty?

Edit: Fixed grammar. Thanks b0z0. :)

Congrats and thanks for sharing details about your business. I'm currently building a subscription based medical training video streaming site. May I also ask for details about the technical aspects? Do you use a media streaming service like Wistia? How do you protect your videos from unauthorized access? Do you serve different formats to different devices?

Thanks in advance for answers.

Re:Is College Worth It? on Monday September 23, 2013 @09:15PM (#6435229)
All the statistical arguments are detracting from the actual issue. College is not worth it because it is expensive and time consuming but does not guarantee you'll be able to earn a living in the future. And unlike a skill or a business, you can't pass your degree to your children.
Re:Ask HN: How to become smarter? on Monday September 23, 2013 @02:33AM (#6429440)
How about studying the Bible?

"All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

A lot of companies we often hear about aren't profitable.
