This is where Google thrives, it makes it's own TPUs that run the models.
Re:The 'Return to Office' Lies on Saturday November 23, 2024 @12:48PM (#42222261)
I don’t think this is true. This is a lagging indicator and takes time to show the meaningful data. You’ll not get your productivity gains as your top talent leaves and everyone else who is salty will coast doing the bare minimum while looking for a new job. https://youtu.be/4ec_yZCWOCY?si=RQs2bo3w_ATv9X6e

I think companies that won’t adapt and embrace remote/hybrid will slowly decay.

Re:Linux Crosses 4% Market Share Worldwide on Tuesday March 05, 2024 @03:37AM (#39600791)
Once Linux can run all my favorite games and future games I will uninstall windows forever.
Re:AWS IPv4 Estate Now Worth $4.5B on Monday September 18, 2023 @05:31AM (#37554049)
I think this is absolutely one of the reasons. Addresses are very hard to remember in ipv6. You usually just have to remember the first 3 parts of ipv4 and then change the last digit based on the host you want. IPv6 I know it has shorthand but still it doesn’t register in my brain the same way.
100% agree. We would put everyone on chromebooks if we had our way. I don’t think it’s good for productivity and generating new ideas for a company so I never advocate for it.
Use fs_usage. https://ss64.com/osx/fs_usage.html

It’ll show all file events. No need to disable SIP. SIP is doing a lot of good work for users and unless you’re doing kernel work or low level coding I’d keep it enabled. Obv. There are other cases but for the general public keep it on.

That's crazy, the same thing happened to me. I was like what? Suddenly now my price has increased when I was on YouTube Red for the longest time. Considering canceling too
+1, I will pay for the removal of the adds but I couldn't care about YouTube TV or music. The price already feels too high but it's the one I don't rotate through compared to Netflix/Disney/Hulu/HBO which I watch a show then cancel.
That's a real shame, you're right. I guess I just see talent different. If this was happening for my product I'd want them on my team. You could argue the legality but there is clear drive and talent to be tapped into.
I don’t get why Nintendo doesn’t just hire these people. You’d want these talented people on your team and they probably know the hardware/software better than people in the company.
Re:Valve Releases Proton 8.0-1c on Monday April 17, 2023 @04:10PM (#35605919)
I can't wait for this day. The day I can run any new release on Linux, I will be off windows forever.
Re:Valve Releases Proton 8.0-1c on Monday April 17, 2023 @04:09PM (#35605909)
Thank you for making it dope! I love my deck.
Re:Ask HN: Are you still using Alfred? on Friday March 17, 2023 @07:02PM (#35204047)
Yeah I am. Is there a reason you don't?
Re:How to politely decline a take-home test task on Thursday March 16, 2023 @01:56PM (#35185624)
You shared it with the employer HR, not the interviewer. Say you're an attractive person and someone now becomes obsessed with you and has your address to stalk you. That's more what I was thinking about
Re:How to politely decline a take-home test task on Thursday March 16, 2023 @11:49AM (#35183533)
I think that one is because people have their friend doing the coding interview for them. However, I understand why you’d rather keep your privacy as well.
You knew it wouldn’t when you asked for that though lol.
Re:Ask HN: Why are PDFs still heavily used? on Wednesday March 08, 2023 @01:05PM (#35072469)
So, it seems a little strange now but when everything was a MS Word Document you had problems with the format. It would look amazing on your machine but if someone else opened it in a version higher or lower than yours or on a different machine things could look really funky and bad.

Thus, PDF was a game changer. Basically, no matter what machine you opened the file on it would look exactly the same. It kinda sucks you can't edit it or have to use special tools to parse it but when it comes to readability across devices it cant be beat.

Ask HN: How do I start to learn how ChatGPT works?

I’ve dabbled in NLP a couple times in my career for basic things like NER regexes, CoreNLP and Spacy but I feel a little bit lost on where to begin for the new generation models coming out. I know they are on the bleeding edge but I’d like to have some intuition around how they work and how the data is gathered. Is anyone able to recommend a textbook, some white papers or online classes?

Re:Google to lay off 10k “poor performers” on Friday November 25, 2022 @01:52PM (#33745575)
It is how every company goes when it gets too big. It does feel like it’s plateaued.
Re:Stripe Announces 14% Layoff on Thursday November 03, 2022 @04:44PM (#33457226)
Three weeks PTO at Stripe, that's it.
I think jupyter notebooks, pytorch/tensorflow and python is much more approachable by everyone. Julia has a steeper learning curve whereas I think you can learn to do enough in Python within a month to be dangerous.
Slack, MMO to Chat client is probably the most interesting and stark pivot
You know, I think if you look in the home automation space you'll see a lot of interesting protocols in the works. Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, and Matter. I think people are working on this problem for the IOT space. Bluetooth is really a strong easy to support protocol and BLE is also an amazing feat when it comes to battery life. Terribly boring to reverse engineer though. I think you also see it more because phones support it by default.

I think a lot of the time it can be devices that implement the protocols poorly because I share your pain with my airpods max. However, I have a pair of a bluetooth headphones that have been amazing for 5 years.

I’m super proud of all our scientists for this work. It’s honestly one of the most astounding photos I’ve ever looked at.

I do want to say there are legitimate reasons to have your users have a forced reset. For example, you’re upgrading your encryption, you migrated to a new IAM system, you’re handling of UTF8 could have been wrong or your meeting a new compliance standard that requires stricter passwords. I don’t know what happened with GitLab, but a telltale sign it’s bad is if they do it for you and not on your next login.

Data collection, anti-trust and privacy policies. Right now it is the wild west and consumers have no idea what is being collected and how they are being profiled for ads. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqn3gR1WTcA

I don't see any mention of regulations coming down on Facebook for the bear case. Same goes for Google. US law will regulate them after following EU's. I think it's very likely once we get more tech literate politicians in place
