I respectfully disagree that the comment is terrible, though as its author I may be biased. The gist of my comment was to ask questions. CTRL-F "?". This service is not necessary if a company wants to hire diversity, all they have to do is look at the candidate to see that the candidate is non-white (again, if hiring diversity is the goal of the company). That just seems racist though.

I do agree with your point that companies can source from wherever they want, but using a service that excludes one or more races is really not a favorable solution. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I cannot recommend this solution to my clients, as it has too much potential for litigation. If Jopwell simply allowed all candidates to apply, regardless of race, and let the client company apply a filter like "Black" or "Native American" or search by photo, if that is the criteria or purpose of their search, then it would make a bit more sense.

I get it now! See for yourself at the Founder's LinkedIn pages [or the Jopwell Team page]. You have two outstanding young men with some great work experience but whom also have extraordinarily white-sounding names yet are not white. My question about just using pictures is now proven to be a potential solution. I'm sure some code that infers the race of a candidate from a digital photo could be used and may be a potential patent.

Edit: Adding that self-identifying race on a candidate's profile may not be optimal when US anti-discrimination hiring laws are in effect. However, a picture is worth a thousand words. If you are shallow enough to hire from a pool that excludes one or more races, then you are also shallow enough to hire a candidate based on their photograph. I understand that some companies are not diverse enough, but there are root causes that Jopwell is not addressing. One cause is America has deep Anglo-Saxon and European roots hence the majority of the population is/was White; the opposite issue may be present in Africa, India, or China where 'whites' are minorities. However, choosing candidates from a racially-segregated pool for the appearance of being diverse seems so shallow. Allowing all candidates, regardless of race, and simply including a photo of a candidate absolves Jopwell on several fronts.

I'm fine with the downvotes, even if I do not understand why. These are valid points.

Since my main concern about security is cardholder data leaks I looked into what it takes to become PCI-compliant https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/merchants/self_assessme..., not that PCI-Compliance is the be-all end-all of web security.

Ask HN: How secure should my site/server be?

I'm not new to security, and that's why I ask. I have created a "payment portal" integrated with Stripe for my [few] customers. I have gone through various guides for securing debian, apache/node, mysql on dedicated instance, etc., using https only, ssl certs, passed Qualys HTTPS/SSL scan with a 90%/A Rating, performed qualys and other vulnerability scans...but have I done enough? I'm not...

There is a level that some employees and consultants reach where "Seniority" is no longer relevant, whether the Consultant is brought into the company either as a Contractor or as an Employee. When I'm brought in it is because no one at the company knows how to fix something, install something, and/or scale something. It doesn't matter how long I have or haven't been with the company, I get it done. I have been fired/terminated because the "Manager" was afraid he'd lose his job or have me promoted above him. I could give two shakes if you've been at a company for 15+ years and have "Seniority" over me. I have vast, real-world experience...you have your very narrow problem set of experience that culminated in not knowing how to do something that resulted in bringing me in. The differences are rarely, if ever, spoken aloud, but are confirmed daily.

Sorry, I'm feeling very wolfish today.

Common, dramatized problem. Hiring can be only occasionally perfect.

"Will burns the proof. Lambeau tries to save it.

LAMBEAU: You're right, Will. I can't do this proof. But you can, and when it comes to that it's only about ... it's just a handful of people in the world who can tell the difference between you and me. But I'm one of them.

WILL: Sorry.

LAMBEAU: Yeah, so am I. Most days I wish I never met you. Because then I could sleep at night, and I wouldn't have to walk around with the knowledge that there's someone like you out there ... . And I didn't have to watch you throw it all away ..."

Great topic Jason. It seems the footnote links [2], [3], etc are missing something...I'm getting "File Not Found"/custom 404.
Re:Ask HN: How did you find the courage to try again? on Monday June 02, 2014 @02:50AM (#7832205)
A few things. Talk to a counselor (psychologist) to vent and vet the issues that led to your past depression and begin a treatment plan. Everyone has problems, some choose those problems, some choose to move on, and some choose to contemplate suicide like yourself (and some actually commit suicide). Just as you sought assistance here, call around and get an appointment.

Do many small things that build into bigger things. You had mentioned LEGO. Make 1 small shed. Done. Make 1 small house. Done. Make another house. Done. Make a city. Done. Make another city. Done. Make a world. Done. One LEGO a time. One line of code at a time. One hamburger at a time.

Ideas are great, and plentiful. Execution is the hard part. Which is better: McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Wendy's, Sonic, Whole Foods Deli, or your local choices of hamburger joints? Who cares who was there first, learn from them and leverage the differences. You're an American. We have been subjected to the greatest Marketing machine on the planet since birth...look at all of the competition for damn near anything. Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, was a dyslexic orphan who stumbled around creating his empire...and it started with one pretty crappy store (restaurant) in Columbus, Ohio. Was Wendy's the only game in town? Did Wendy's not have any competition locally, nationally, or globally? WHO CARES! He forged ahead and died a Billionaire. When Dave was born did anyone think Dave Thomas could even run a Hamburger store or that his potential (or destiny) would be owning thousands of hamburger stores? Probably not. He threw his all into something and despite the failures, loss of market share, fighting healthy menu choices, etc. he still did something. Arguably, the Dave Thomas Foundation is what his true potential/destiny would be.

Your potential is not something you live up to, it is something you live. The imaginary apex of potential is well, imaginary. It is also so one-dimensional as to be transparent. Focus on living right, whatever that means to you, and the rest will come.

To answer your questions: 1. Never give up on getting back up. Note the "results" (not the "failure", that's called learning), and say aloud, "Next." If you "fail" a test do you break down and cry? No, if you're smart you review the test and study the gaps in your knowledge and comprehension. Are the "results" random, or did you fail to plan?

2. I have seen many of "my ideas" eventually end up on the market. It's called validation not theft. What prevented me from getting there first or being a contender? All this BS about first to market is cute and does not prevent you, me, or anyone from doing it better, faster, cheaper.

This financial company you work for...are they the only financial company in the US or the world? Are they really that badass? Let's assume you are working for a bank, what company was the last disruptor? Ally? ING? Stripe maybe? ATMs are going the way of the dodo...I know, I worked for the big three (Diebold, NCR, and Fujitsu)...and they are scared as shit with all of the cashless, swipe, tap, bitcoin, online mortgages, email funds, etc. Point: Everyone's ideas will get to market eventually. Sometimes the idea comes with an alloy of passion, persistence, and good timing for you or someone else. Competition is good, as is using technology to pivot.

3: Burnout: take it easy, go camping, get away, read a book. Take many small breaks. Take a vacation. Take it easy. Have dreams, and live them.

4: Brogrammers and sexism...who cares. I put up with all kind of -isms and societal BS everyday. Welcome to society. I'm not sure what your issues are, but I just focus on my concerns.

5: I love bubble talk. It is very remedial. What goes up, must come down...but what aspects? Again, focus on your concerns. When one bubble pops another starts growing.

I'm a burly bearded man. I check out the "geek", "technology" and "science and nature" sections. I also search for camping gear and kayak pics on the Pacific ocean that remind me of my time kayaking from Anacortes, WA to the San Juan Islands. I have also posted my own very humble nature and landscape photographs on Pinterest. Pinterest is trying to "attract" males, but males need to think to use Pinterest.

Re:Pinterest Raises $200M on Friday May 16, 2014 @12:45AM (#7753793)
You must have a developer account or something. Pinterest, for me, is free and they don't seem to be placing ads or monetizing sales like Etsy. I only connect to Pinterest at 3 distinct times/places: waiting rooms, king conference room (toilet), and when I'm looking for inspiration and ideas (sometimes all in one :)...so I am probably not considered a hard-core user.

How does google search attempts equal 200 million USD...if that were the case searches for Obamacare or Affordable Care Act would have paid the national debt thrice over. [I just used a gov't example, I don't care what the healthcare bill is called]

Re:Pinterest Raises $200M on Friday May 16, 2014 @12:38AM (#7753765)
Growth...growth might be in their future plans. Acquisitions, KLO, more employees, new directions. I hope they go big. Great service, smart design that works. Monetizing would be easy.
Re:Show HN: Take It Apart on Friday May 16, 2014 @12:31AM (#7753749)
That solder mask is cool, but placing epoxy dots before placing the component works pretty good, especially if a reflow oven is used anyways. Misaligned components at high-tolerance has been an issue with solder masks, and not all silicon based solder masks are CE-compliant. The time it takes to drop epoxy dots is less than the time to retouch and realign the component.

I used to program PNP and CNC machines back in the heyday of Cray, then moved up to developing the software to program PNPs and CNCs (shit, I've come a long way since then but still miss the sweet smell of lead in the morning from the wave solderers) improving "fiduciary" operations and increasing speed, accuracy, and feeding.

Re:HP Makes $1 Billion Bet on Open Cloud on Monday May 12, 2014 @02:34PM (#7734565)
I too am a "self-declared" cloud architect...mainly Azure and Windows-based platforms for Fortune 500 companies that want MS-based cloud architectures for Exchange, SharePoint, MSSQL, and Dynamics. Sorry, but other than setting it up in a lab for my own interest and tinkering, I have not had a Client request OpenStack or any OSS if they are implementing a Microsoft technology-based cloud or hybrid-cloud architecture. Not to say F-500 companies don't use Open Source, but OSS is typically not utilized in every cloud or on-prem environment.

Edit: a bit more clarity

Re:Google Maps Has Forsaken Us on Saturday May 10, 2014 @12:19PM (#7725915)
+1 for Bing maps [shudders]. I tried yahoo maps and it is nearly as crappy as the new google maps...hell, Apple maps is superior to the new google maps...and I didn't see that coming.
SSD in the cloud, Linode is just now trying to catch up. I would not expect a wikipedia editor to understand how RPMs of spinning platters in the cloud is not novel. Personally, I'm not a fan of DO but they did push SSD in the cloud while MSFT Azure is still justifying (and recently lowering their price for)their 5400RPM drives.

I don't expect an encyclopedia to include everything that ever existed, but the mere facts that people from across the world are googling Digital Ocean and discussing DO on more than just HN should necessitate an ENTRY into a free online encyclopedia. Why capture the history of a company when we can just edit/delete it? There are more important revisions going on.

Cynically but realistically, who is getting paid (or getting donations) to keep DO down?

Is the purpose of Wikipedia to educate and inform or retardedly (not my word) not have facts of the existence of a company that is a competitor to their fund contributors? DO is just a flash in the pan, like the DODO bird, but people still want to know what a dodo bird was.

You are concise.

Responsive Web Design...downvote me. RWD has come leaps and bounds. It's a news feed with pictures and comments.
Re:Whatever’s Best For The People, That’s What We Do on Friday March 28, 2014 @03:02AM (#7485727)
Look into Responsive Web Design. Poster seemed to be questioning UI and UX choices for different screen sizes. Facebook is behind the curve on RWD...shocking.

Being able to save and display options or settings has been done...at scale.

Re:Whatever’s Best For The People, That’s What We Do on Friday March 28, 2014 @02:48AM (#7485701)
What is Responsive Web Design? How could it be used to enhance the UX and UI? Why isn't Facebook using RWD? Real, scalable RWD? I must be way off base, but their issues with the News Feed design are surmountable. Not impressed by Julie.

I have never thought of FB as a bastion of design...and I have not yet been swayed to think or see otherwise.

Just use dinosaurs...

Algorithm or technique? The press release is quite vague (I did not check through the links). Are we talking laser, infrared, visible spectrum, or fruity pebbles algos? What if a pure black object is occluding known stars? What if there is some ice on the same black object? Is the algo meant to be run directly on a satellite (Hubble, Kepler, etc.) or from a terrestrial observatory?

Break it into knowns, then unknowns.
